This is absolutely the worst possible use for the existing land. There are numerous petrol stations in the area. The extra traffic and the impact it would have on nearby daycare and school children poses to much danger. If a car wash was not deemed suitable for the site how could a petrol station possibly be considered as a better or safer option? As a previous resident of Buxton street and a current resident of Killarney street I am familiar with just how busy the area can be and believe the excess tragic especially around peak hour, which goes hand in hand with school and daycare drop off hours would present to high a risk. Also a petrol station does not come close to fitting with the desired aesthetic that Mount Hawthorn have been trying so hard to attain of the Scarborough beach road strip.

  2. Matt Hoffmann commented

This development is in stark contrast to the desired streetscape and aesthetic
that the council have been seeking to develop along Scarborough Beach Road. It has no architectural merit and would be an eyesore. The disrupted and increased traffic that would result in this development being located where it is proposed in proximity to the school, day care centre and park would add unacceptable additional risk to pedestrians and cyclists and would also further add to congestion on Scarborough Bch Rd. At least 2 previous petrol stations in this area are now repurposed as resident/people friendly businesses that add to the amenity of the suburb; rather than allowing the reintroduction of visually unappealing petrol stations, encouragement should be given to such things architecturally interesting electric vehicle charging points, a much more forward thinking and responsible use.

  3. Claudia commented

Shameful way to use this land.

With Scarborough Beach Road being single lane each way it will congest the area even more and create more dangers.

Being so close to the school and day care centre a fuel station will only increase the traffic and risk to the public.

  4. Paul Shead commented

I do not support the proposed petrol station at the corner of Scarborough Beach Road and Buxton Street. Scarborough Beach Road has been narrowed to reduce the impact of traffic and make the area safer for cyclists and pedestrians. A petrol station in the vicinity of the childcare centre and Mount Hawthorn primary school would pose and increased hazard for children, parents and visitors to the area.
A petrol station used to be on the corner of The Boulevarde but was obviously not viable because it closed many years ago. There are already 4 petrol stations within 3km of Mount Hawthorn. There is no logical reason for a new petrol station to be reintroduced to the area.

  5. Tracy Denham commented

I vigorously oppose the proposal to turn this site into a petrol station. It not only seems to oppose all the other work that has been done to make Mt Hawthorn more pedestrian friendly but it would attract extra traffic to a site that is bordered by a busy primary school and a day care centre. That seems insane. There are myriad more community-friendly purposes for a site such as this. PLEASE do not let this go through.

  6. Renae Nahajski commented

I too vehemently oppose the site becoming a petrol station. There are several already in the area and it would have a huge negative impact on traffic.
I'm also very concerned over the health and safety issues many others have mentioned here, especially with a Child Care centre and residential area so nearby. It seems irresponsible to me for such a high risk service to even be considered on this location.

  7. Daniel Tarttelin commented

After all the efforts over the past few years to make Mt Hathorn a Hub for the community to enjoy, it seems completely unnecessary to plonk a dirty, busy petrol station in the centre of it. As a resident of Mt Hawthorn I have never once found it difficult to access a petrol station already close to the suburb. We do not need this!

  8. Julian Forte commented

This is a totally unacceptable proposal. The only winner is the developer and commercial contract for the fuel company. After all the efforts over the last ten years to divert traffic away from Scarborough beach road this defies common sense.

As a rate payer I oppose this proposal.

  9. Jane Citizen commented

As a Mt Hawthorn resident I value the village feel of Mt Hawthorn. A village needs to have a full range of services and amenities, and I do not have an issue with a petrol station on this site.
There are already massive semi-trailers regularly driving along Scarborough Beach Rd to service Woolworths and other businesses.
The bike path that we have unfortunately does not connect the two sides of Mt Hawthorn, as it stops in the middle, where the traffic is busiest and most congested, including out the front of the primary school. I have always wondered why the money was spent on a bike path that just stops, as I would much prefer to be able to cycle from the western side of Mt Hawthorn through to North Perth and vice versa.
This site is out of the main shopping hub of Mt Hawthorn, and has far less foot traffic than the main shopping area between Coogee St and Fairfield St. As it not a cafe will not cause parking woes for nearby residents (talk to neighbours of Casa Bianchi and Dejaxo to see what a pain a cafe is).
Opposing this application sounds like a case of NIMBY (Not In My Backyard)-ism to me.

PS Not using my name as have previously had nuisance calls when I have disagreed publicly with others.

We do not support the proposed petrol station at the corner of Scarborough Beach Rd and Buxton St. Our 4 grandchildren live very close by, attend the Mt Hawthorn Primary School and regularly play at the Braithwaite Park therefore a petrol station so close by would put their lives and their friend's lives at risk. It is very easy to find petrol stations in the re. Furthermore, it would take away the village feeling that Mt Hawthorn has.

  11. Amalia Gangemi commented

I do not support the proposed petrol station on the corner of Buxton Street & Scarborough Beach Road.

It is very close to the primary school and daycare and would make walking to school dangerous with increased traffic & cars lining up. There are petrol stations in very close proximity.

A petrol station in the middle of the community is not appropriate.

  12. Lesley Abraham commented

I do not support this in any way. Mount Hawthorn does not need another petrol station and I find it astonishing that this is even being considered. Please stop this nonsense before it's too late.

  13. Fiona Liew commented

I am strongly opposed to this proposal, for multiple reasons. However, the main concern would be that of public safety, given that there is a child care centre directly opposite to this site, and a primary school in very close proximity. Driving through this area is very congested especially at school pick up and drop-off times, and the extra volume of cars, let alone large fuel tank trucks, would make this very unsafe. The proposal for a car-wash was bad enough. This proposal is even more ridiculous.

  14. Lorna commented

I'm surprised to hear that another petrol station is required in this area. We really don't need anymore and the proposed location is not ideal to the young families attending daycare and school.
I sincerely hope this proposal is not approved.

  15. Karmjit commented

A petrol station on the proposed location is out of character/keeping with the mount hawthorn vibe. There will be undesireable consequences for residents such as odours from the fuel, the risk of fuel leakage from underground tanks, the risk to children should there be a fire/explosion with the local primary school being a block away and having approx 800 kids. Do not let this happen!!

  16. Mt hawthorn resident commented

What a great idea and should be considered appropriately. There is no petrol station in our suburb and should not expect the neighbouring suburbs to carry the load.

Scarborough beach road is busy all the time adding any kind of shop/retail will ad traffic. Having the site utilised rather than empty its a good use for the site, the suburb and the community.

  17. Shane Meek commented

I 100% disagree with this application. As a nearby resident I have front row seats of this location. Already there is much congestion, especially at school drop off and pickup times. With an existing problem of traffic traveling in the wrong direction on Killarney street putting pedestrians and other motorists at significant risk. It is of my opinion that this application if successful will only increase the risks to the public. Also then there is the issue of the environmental impact potentials with a business of this type. Soil contamination, explosive hazards, fume hazards, degredation of wildlife habitats, waterway and ground water contamination. Then we have realestate devaluation surrounding this site and increase costs for surrounding properties for soil samples. But most of all this business will not fit in with what has been achieved in tranforming Mount Hawthorn into the wonderful place it is today. Please make the right decision for the greater community.

  18. Linda commented

Strongly against this proposal on the grounds of risk to public safety, given the close proximity of child care centre and local primary school. Additional traffic created by a service station in this area is not only a risk to the high volume of pedestrian traffic but will be untenable when added to existing vehicular traffic at peak times.

  19. Scott Yelland commented

I, and many residents of Mt Hawthorn that I have spoken to regarding this application, are totally opposed to a service station on this site. Directly opposite a primary school with 700+ students and a daycare centre for young children. Many children walk past this site and the additional vehicle traffic caused by cars entering and exiting a service station will only lead to more dangerous situations. Additionally, Scarborough Beach Rd is a single lane road in this location - what happens when a fuel tanker is waiting to enter the site? Traffic congestion already exists at school drop off and pick up times - the road isn't designed to handle more congestion and won't handle any more.

    Kind regards,

    Scott Yelland
    Mt Hawthorn PS P&C President

  20. Amanda Derbyshire commented

As a Mt Hawthorn resident and parent of children attending Mt Hawthorn Primary School I strongly oppose this proposed development. The location is completely unsuitable with existing traffic issues and a large primary school and day care centre within 50 metres.

  21. J & B Flynn commented

We are strongly opposed to the proposed petrol station at the corner of Scarborough Beach Rd and Buxton St.

We're particularly concerned about the potential health and safety risks of fumes and pollution with semi-industrial facilities like this petrol station so close to adjacent residential spaces, the day care opposite the proposed site, and the nearby school.

As other residents have mentioned, this corner is challenging enough in the mornings and afternoons with foot traffic and vehicle congestion due to children being dropped off and picked up from the school and day care. Adding yet another source of traffic to the area, which will likely peak at similar times, is not in the best interests of the community.

Additionally, there are plenty of petrol stations in the area, with the closest being only 500 metres away (a 2 minute drive) on Main St, further removing the justification for such a proposal.

  22. Jayne commented

Absolutely oppose this application. A petrol station right between a daycare and primary school is completely irresponsible and utterly unnecessary. Please do not undo all the hard work this community has and continues to do in making mt hawthorn as safe a place as possible for our kids...all for the sake of $

  23. Alistair Towers commented

Please could you reconsider the proposed petrol station on the corner of Buxton Street & Scarborough Beach Road? I do not support it and believe strongly that it would be detrimental to the street's progression of safety and accessibility for the community's school children, cyclists and pedestrians.

  24. local resident commented

What a great idea & with a bit of luck a mechanic will work there too. Really missed that service when the Gull (cafe Bianchi) closed. That site has been empty on & off for years, a cafe look better but dont think our cafe strip needs any more competition.

  25. Flora Prawira commented

I strongly oppose this application for the establishment of a petrol station along this bottleneck on Scarborough Beach Rd.

As previously highlighted by other residents here, the more pertinent issue is that of our kids' safety, especially those attending Mount Hawthorn Primary School.

There is already a petrol station around the corner on Main St, not 2 mins away. I'm sure any one of the alternate suggestions on this page would be a much better and appropriate use of this space.

Please consider the needs of the overwhelming majority of the residents of Mount Hawthorn.

  26. V Finlay commented

I'm very much opposed to this proposal. There will only be a negative impact on the local environment, traffic congestion, community safety and the streetscape. Mount Hawthorn has a majority of young families who are often found walking peacefully around the neighbourhood, an activity which will be threatened by the increase in vehicles brought about by the petrol station. I'm very happy to drive two minutes down the road for petrol.

  27. Mount Hawthorn Resident commented

We strongly oppose the plan to situate a petrol station on this site.

Firstly, this goes against all of the efforts in place to reduce traffic impacts along this stretch of Scarborough Beach Rd, including single lane traffic, bike lanes, tree plantings, lowered speed limits and the likely re-planning of the Scarborough Beach Rd/Green St intersection.

Secondly, a station is not compatible from a safety or suitability perspective with other land use types in the area, including a large primary school of over 800 children, a daycare centre, and an increasingly attractive/popular shopping strip focused on a safe pedestrian experience.

Lastly, this area has ample coverage from existing petrol stations to the west (on Main St), to the north (Dog Swamp), to the east (cnr of Scarborough Beach Rd & Charles St) and to the south (Vincent St). Another petrol station in the area is clearly not needed!

  28. Leeane Beasley commented

There are many reasons to oppose this appplication: however safety should be paramount. A service station in this location is not appropriate given the school, day care and an already busy road now it is one lane, for pedestrians and motorists. The addition of a service station will only add to the already high congestion on Scarb. Beach Road.
    I strongly oppose this application.

  29. Donna Buchanan commented

As a long time resident (20 years) of Mount Hawthorn I would like to state my opposition of the proposed Petrol Station for the site at Buxton and Scarborough Beach Road. This intersection is already extremely busy, even more so during the school terms. There are businesses in this area which i believe would be affected by the inclusion of this petrol station, namely the childcare centre on the corner of Egina and Scarborough Beach Road. Please consider the proximity to the primary school and the 4 other petrol stations in the area of Glendalough, North Perth and Leederville. Thank you.

  30. Alice Pearce commented

As a Vincent rate payer I strongly oppose this proposal for a petrol station on Scarborough Beach Road, Mount Hawthorn. I reiterate safety concerns for pedestrians and cyclists that have been quoted previously above. This really should be a 'no brainer' decision after all the efforts & infrastructure implemented by Council to reduce traffic and increase safety in this exact area.

  31. Heidi Vivian commented

Please do not put a petrol station opposite the school on sScarborough Beach rd. As a City of Vincent rate payer I stongly oppose it.

  32. Susanna Wills-Johnson commented

Like many other residents, I am opposed to this proposal. This is an already congested area and does not need a facility of this sort adding to car traffic, particularly so close to the daycare and school.

  33. Platt commented

We strongly oppose the application for a petrol station. We have multiple petrols stations along Scarborough beach road, there are 10 stations available to residents from North Perth to Osborne Park alone. It is a safety concern and for all residents in the area, as well as the impact on the one lane of traffic which is already congested. It can sometimes take up to 5 minutes to get onto Scarborough beach road from Egina crossing both lanes.

  34. Kirsten Campbell commented

As a resident of Mount Hawthorn, I also oppose the development of a petrol station at this site for all the reasons clearly outlined by those before me. We have resided in this suburb since 2001 and have NEVER heard someone complain they can't get petrol!!!

  35. Lorna commented

I'm surprised to hear that another petrol station is required in this area. We really don't need anymore and the proposed location is not ideal to the young families attending daycare and school.

  37. Donna morrissey commented

My children go to the primary school near by.
traffic is already heavy and goes too fast in the mornings.
I believe this would not help the situation, as more traffic would detour to get fuel in the mornings.

  38. Louise Terry commented

I live close to the school and would not support this application. I agree with the above comments. This is too close to residential areas, the school and the daycare. There are more than 800 children at the school and many of them walk and ride. This will also affect the deli and shops next door which we would like to remain as they add to the village feel of mount hawthorn.
