I am opposed to this development on the grounds of the current structure having significant local heritage value as a mid-century modern gem. The house currently standing was built by renowned Melbourne architect Neil Clerehan as service plan T2151 for The Age RVIA Small Homes Service.

In 2016 a concrete brick townhouse built in 1964 by Clerehan in South Yarra's busy Domain Road became the most recent addition to the state's heritage register - and it was a suitable recognition for an architect who had contributed so much to the city since his registration in 1948. Along with his much-celebrated work, for many years Clerehan wrote for The Age's "Small Homes Service", designing vast numbers of sample house plans. He designed The Age "Dream Home" in 1954 in Surrey Hills (sadly it has since been demolished).

Heritage Victoria stated the significant 20th-century building in South Yarra was nominated on the advice of a group of eminent Melbourne architects, from which the current house at 18 Waratah St requires recommendation before being hastily torn down for 2 double-storey attached dwellings. This restructuring will dramatically alter the current streetscape, and destroy any remaining evidence of our already dwindling mid-century history.

As Glen Eira would be aware, the homes of this character and period are extremely rare and sought after - and in this area do not exist anymore due to poor development decisions and recommendations by under-qualified parties over the decades.

As a member of Beaumaris Modern, I do have grounds to be extremely concerned for the potential loss of this structure due to lack of foresight and knowledge on its significance and uniqueness. I would very much like to see expert assessment, in the likes of prominent architects with the appropriate backgrounds to have their opinion and advice documented in this matter.
