This house is one of the oldest in Penrith and is still located on the original land grant. It was built at the same time as Combewood House which draws huge crowds of appreciative people when they have open days. Why does the residence have to be demolished and lost forever as have other historic houses in this area. Can not the units be built around this house as has been done in other areas of Sydney, or the units not be approved.
This house and land is not only worth keeping for the above reasons but also because of the Cammacks association with it. Mrs Cammack herself is part of Penriths history from Alderman to Mayor of Penrith, and the Coroner for this area.
This small part of Penriths history should not be allowed to fall under the developers hammer, it might provide a few units for a few people, but will be lost to the people of Penrith forever. Also it will not even provide jobs for locals as most contractors bring their own workforce from others areas with them as per other units being built in Penrith.

I agree with Richard Ward on why we need to fight to preserve this piece of local history. It seems as if councils &developers have joined forces in being hell bent in destroying communities and individual historical landmarks to build these homogeneous, quickly built rabbit warrens of unit buildings that are spreading like a cancer all throughout Sydney and it's suburbs.
Who believes that these huge unit buildings really will alleviate the housing crisis in Sydney? The units are sold at such excessive prices-many bought up by foreigners with shady money, and left empty as purely investment objects. Many units in Sydney which have been built over the last 5 years are already showing structural damage due to the poor workmanship of foreign workers and the quick buck mentality of the developers and councilors they are in cohorts with.
To demolish thus historic house on Vista street and replace it with a bland block of units will truly be an act of vandalism and shame on the part of Penrith Council. It is your duty to the local people who employ you,Penrith Council, to maintain our community heritage and links with the past and to help maintain our individual identity .Your role is not to erase individually and pride in our past&the beauty that is unique to this building.

We need to keep some of the history of this magnificent area of our country. Too many old and historic buildings are demolished, to be replaced with Multi level housing. It is Councils duty to listen to the people and also to maintain ouf historical features, such as this. Once it is destroyed, it can never be retrieved.

  4. Rachael Wilson commented

Units are built left right and centre at the expense of Penrith's history. Penrith council needs think about the charm of these historical buildings which once demolished can never be replaced, rather then how much money the developers are throwing them and reject the application outright.

    (In full sarcasm mode)
Let's just raze the whole street and build a shi*te tonne of units!
    Unreal!...

  6. Vicki Rogers commented

Please do not allow this development to proceed! Historic buildings in Penrith are rare and the ones that are left hould be preserved. Penrith residents are suffering because of over-development. We don't want our town to turn into a concrete jungle. Please consider saving this beautiful house and allowing sympathetic public use.

I really do not believe the Council has their current resident's interest at the fore. Why is it now so easy to destroy the areas character with all these ugly multi - storey flats whilst demolishing, what most people believe, are historical buildings. It would also seem that there is no thought for the aesthetics when seeing these new buildings going up whenever a random site becomes available.

I THOUGHT THAT WE WERE WORRIED ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING AND THE ANSWER WAS TO PLANT MORE TREES NOT CONCRETE BUILDINGS! PENRITH IS BEING DESTROYED BY ALL THESE HIGHRISE UNITS AS BLACKTOWN AND PARRAMATTA HAVE BEEN.PLEASE LEAVE SOME BEAUTY FOR THE FUTURE GENERATION TO ENJOY AS WE HAVE HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF ENJOYING. WE ARE RUNNING OUT OF SPACE FOR SCHOOLS, PARKS AND RECREATION SPACE.

  9. Kimberley Evans commented

I believe that this place should not be demolished and we need to keep the history of this place and others where they are. If we demolish all of the history how are the future generations able to see what places looked like in the past and enjoy learning about it all as I know personally I love reading and seeing the history of buildings.
Please do not demolish it I also agree with the above posts

Penrith council needs to keep their grubby hands off our history!
The council and greedy developers are destroying the soul of this city

  11. Linda gilmore commented

Considering penrith was one of the original towns there is not much to show of our historic past. This building should be preserved.

  12. Michelle Dwyer commented

Penrith Council and it's Councillors will continue to do whatever they choose, only to gain the $$$$ and dump on not only Penrith's Heritage but Australia's Heritage too! The Vista Street property should NOT be sold to developers. In contrast, does anyone think Waverley Council would get away with selling Vaucluse House to developers for billions of $$$? No, there would be community uproar and the NSW State Government would not allow it!!! So, those same principles must apply to the Vista Street property, thus it should never ever be sold!

  13. Allison Matley commented

I realise progress is important and change and growth is inevitable, but this does not have to be at the cost of our heritage. As others have said, a lot of Penrith's heritage buildings have been lost and at times it seems we don't quite know who we are trying to be, but how about we present as a modern progressive city that values its past and can find a way to present it to a wider general public. Don't let this council be one of short-sightedness, see the future but don't lose sight of the past. Buy the house and garden, open it as a tourist attraction, it wont cost as much as the walking bridge or the western gateway.

I am a local Penrith resident who lives in Doonmore Street and I agree wholly with everyone else's comments herein. I am surrounded by all these new and ugly looking units which are destroying the character and charm of Penrith. This home should be Heritage listed immediately and an explanation given to the ratepayers as to why this has not already been done. Whoever is in charge of Heritage Listings in Council should give careful consideration to other beautiful old homes in the area before they are all bulldozed and forever gone. We need to keep some history alive for future generations. These units are going up pretty fast, makes you wonder what the quality of the workmanship and materials are like?? I hope Council are making sure that all of these units are being built with fire retardant materials and have appropriate emergency fire measures installed !!!

  15. Chris Watts commented

We should value and protect our beautiful heritage buildings. Once they are gone we cannot get them back. The history of our area is worth preserving in every way for future generations. The beauty and uniqueness of other cities is their history and heritage buildings. Why would we destroy ours? For the sake of greed? If we are not careful we will end up with a city of cement with no evidence of our heritage and nothing left to attract anyone.
