The Bearded Tit brings the community together through art and music. This bar is a meeting place and a safe place for any gender and sexuality. As a local resident and business owner I feel that this establishment has been impacted by restricted hours. I would be supportive of bringing back the original trading hours.

  2. Jack Barton commented

As a former Redfern resident I am now living in Melbourne and fully appreciate the value to the city of open, activated and engaged venues in forming a genuine sense of community and destination. It is certainly in the best interests of a cosmopolitan city to continue the trial trading hours for a further 2 years for the licensed small bar known as ‘The Bearded Tit’.

The Bearded Tit is a unique, inclusive and artistically rich establishment that forms and important part of the local and broader city cultural fabric. Reduced operating hours will threaten the viability of this venue and likely see it close along with a litany of other loved Sydney establishments. I had overseas guests from London insist on returning to the Bearded Tit three times in a seven night stay due to the unique and inclusive environment it provides. It is safe for people of all gender identities, ages and outlooks and as such is a rare and valuable venue that cannot afford to be lost. People that move to a vibrant inner city suburb for those very qualities then insist it maintains the same sedentary qualities as the leafy suburbs from which they moved are deceiving themselves of their true values. Please restore the Bearded Tits extended trading hours which in any international city would still be considered conservative. Thank you.

The Tit is a wonderful space that harbours a great sense of community. As a former resident of Regent Street, and a local to the area I'd love to see this small business being supported. I fully support longer opening hours.

'The Bearded Tit' is famous Australia wide as a inclusive space for the LGBT community. I'm a former Redfern resident who now lives Melbourne l've seen it often referred to on social media and in the mainstream press. I hope this venture that is an important part of Sydney's cultural capital can be assisted to sustain itself as a business.

As a shift worker it is really nice to be able to grab a night cap after 11pm on my way home. The tit is safe and relaxed and perfect for a debrief after a hectic day. Please let it remain trading til midnight.

  7. Csaba Mellar commented

Pleasel extend the opening hours for the Bearded Tit. It is such a unique and iconic Sydney bar. It's a fantastic, welcoming friendly place to go after a movie or dinner ... well, it would be if it was open a bit later. Please don't let it join the long list of Sydney venues that have closed their doors.

  8. Marisa Marsionis commented

The Bearded Tit is a very responsibly run venue that takes pride in keeping its customers safe and comfortable. I have never felt unsafe there, regardless of what the clock says. It is a unique place that brings joy to the community and provides a stage for artists and performers. It is an absolute gem and I support longer trading hours as I would really love to be able to responsibly have a glass of wine and a cheese board after 11pm on a Friday night.

  9. Rhett Newman commented

The Bearded Tit is a very special venue, offering an experience unlike any other in Sydney. It is an inclusive space that is highly supportive of the arts and the local community. In a city that would like to sell itself as a global creative center, it would be absurd to impose further trading hours restrictions on such a unique venue. I support a continuation of the existing hours.

  10. Jo-Anne Miley commented

I am a Redfern resident of over 12 years. I have loved the growth of small bars in the area, particularly those like The Bearded Tit with their focus on giving local artists an outlet. Redfern has become a real destination for artistic entertainment. It adds enormously to the culture of our city.

On Saturday night I took two international guests to the Bearded Tit to proudly show them the local culture. We had dinner out in Redfern and arrived just before 11pm. I was stunned that it was closing. My guests were similarly shocked. It's bad enough that, like Cinderella, everyone has to leave before midnight but 11pm is too much! So much for Sydney's international reputation. So much for our artists and their venues.

I'm very disturbed by these growing restrictions on what arts-loving adults can do at night. We can't grow our culture and our vital artistic community in the face of these continuous restrictions and lock-outs. Like my guests, I have lived in several international cities and found this not only hard to explain to them, but embarrassing.

I would like to know the Council's reasoning behind this new 'early closing' restriction.

  11. Tiera Boo commented

The bearded tit is a local gem, a unique venue that provides an oasis from the otherwise dull beer barns that encourages young people to binge drink.
It is also an important community space for art and music. It fosters art practises and music from both emerging and established artists, offering a space for each to explore their practice in an engaging space.
Please do not restrict the opening hours of this venue, it's too important for the community to loose. And we have lost so much culture in this city of late!

  12. Alex Pye commented

As a local resident and frequent customer at the Bearded Tit I would just like to say that I have always felt safe and included in the utterly unique environment that staff and patrons have created together. I support a continuation of the existing trading hours so that the space can continue to provide a haven of art, music and culture. In my opinion its one of the best bars in Sydney.

  13. Julius Toomey commented

This bar is a great safe space with lovely drinks and friendly people. An absolute essential to the arts community and the city.

  14. Amy Gadsby commented

The bearded tit provides a vibrant and inclusive space that brings our broader community together. I currently live in Potts Point and am saddened that there aren't many small and unique spaces that exhibit and support local artists, or have nights with live DJ' s and musicians in the same way that the bearded tit does. It is a wonderful bar with greater interests than just selling drinks to punters, it feeds a diverse landscape of arts and culture rarely seen any more. I wholeheartedly support the extended trading hours to allow not only the bar to stay open but also to provide a wonderful space for locals and visitors to sydney alike.

i am a local resident that lives 10min walk from this bar. i have lived in Sydney for 40 years.

this bar has to be one of the most outstanding, friendly, inclusive, original and social places ever created in the Sydney bar/club scene.

ive been to this bar numerous times and anytime a visitor from.overseas visits for example, i take pride in showing them this bar. it is definitely a gem. I would argue its one of the best bars IN THE WORLD and i have lived in many places around the world from Soho/London to Berlin to Portland/Oregon.

trading until midnight is essential for this bar. i would argue that 1am is also acceptable, considering this bar is on a busy thoroughfare bring regent st, in the heart of the creative precinct of redfern, it would be crazy to curb its hours as then thered be less places to go later at night..

  16. Kaylee Hazell commented

As a local, I have enjoyed meeting many like minded community members at The Bearded Tit. Everyone from patrons, bar staff and performers are all made to feel equal and safe. It has always been a respectful, inclusive and friendly place where we can express who we are as a community. Extended hours would allow more of this community connection and foster more pride and celebration for all those who visit!

  17. Jonathon Creenaune commented

The Bearded Tit is a unique bar, it has beautiful art in an inclusive environment. Surely it is harder to keep a venue like this viable (compared to a pokie parlour or beer barn) and that restricting its opening hours reduces that viability. Having great venues like this, that have received awards and are different from other bars, make Redfern a better place to live.

  18. Daniel O'leary commented

    The Bearded Tit;
I rest my complete faith and lay my trust in its owners and its operators. They know how to do their job.
They provide an exciting space to eat and to drink...to work and to play... to create and to innovate.

Please allow these inspirational leaders in small business jto trade until midnight and lift your ludicrous restrictions on their venue. Please.

  19. AñA Wojak commented

I regularly pass the Bearded Tit on my way home from Redfern station and have always enjoyed it's unique civilized atmosphere. It promotes art, music & diversity and is an integral part of the local community. As a single woman I always feel safe, welcome and made to feel at home there. But with the early closing time it is frustrating that I can't even stop by for a quiet nightcap on the way home from theatre or movie. Sydney has pretensions of being a contemporary city, but lock-out laws & early closings make it a ghost town at night. There need to be more places like the Tit, run with integrity and care for its patrons & the community that surrounds it, rather than restrictions that threaten its very viability. Please extend the opening hours of this wonderful establishment.

  20. Sandra Knowles commented

The Bearded Tit is a special and unique venue, highly regarded as one of the best local bars around, and could suffer irreparably from this change in hours. Please reconsider.

Please allow the bearded tit to stay open till midnight to enable one of sydney's best bars to stay viable. It provides a friendly relaxed and inclusive space for all sydney siders and causes little distruption to the neighbourhood. Thanks

A place in Sydney that whole heartedly lends its self to the patrons and is a part of the community more than words can describe.
Venues like this are worth more than the exorbitant Sydney dirt which they lay.
Venues money can't buy. Experiences and a sense of community and home that is just complete magic.

This I should the type of venue that attracts like minded, forward thinking, genuine people and to see that be throttled would be an absolute tragedy and travesty.

The bearded tit is an essential element to Sydney's diverse arts community, nurturing many local artists and giving them a platform to showcase their skill. It is much more than just a bar.

The space provides a safe and inclusive environment for people from all walks of life.
This is the exact type of bar Sydney needs at the moment!

  26. Del Lumanta commented

The Bearded Tit began as a venture between friends and has grown into a unique space that supports a lot of folk in the surrounding community, particularly in the arts. To reduce their hours of operating yet again sends a pretty depressing message to those who are wanting to/already working hard to make a positive contribution to the city. City of Sydney should be consulting them about extending hours and giving them money.

  27. peta Morris commented

The Bearded Tit is a vibrant and creative community space that deserves and needs to trade until midnight to make it a viable operation. I support this application and would hope that council will too, it's a no brainer.

  28. Daisy L commented

The Bearded Tit is a fantastic local venue and a safe, welcoming space for people of diverse ages and genders. It is utterly absurd that the Tit is being forced to close at 11pm. The Tit is not a large noisy pub. The Tit is a small bar. Countless small bars in Melbourne are able to stay open past midnight without disturbing local residents and I feel confident that later opening hours would be of benefit to local residents such as myself who wish to have a quiet drink on the way home. Please allow the Tit to remain open later.

  29. Kate Hoffacker commented

Clover Moore and the COS heralded this new age of small bars in our city of villages. In turn under Clover's watchful but encouraging eye, Redfern has flourished and evolved. Small bars like the Bearded Tit breathe life into our neighbourhoods instilling a sense of community that straddles age, sex, race, gender and class. As mature, law-abiding citizens contributing to the tax base and council coffers we would like the COS council to represent us the community and approve a continuation of the current Bearded Tit trading hours.
Long live the Tit, late shall she trade, and much happiness and joy joy shall she spread!

The Bearded Tit is EXACTLY the sort of small bar that should be encouraged to thrive. Great owners, lovely staff and security. The clientele is diverse and mature - in the way they contribute to community. Everyone is welcome.
It's a meeting space, art and performance space. It's unique and desperately needed and should be fully supported.
The owners are respectful to their neighbours and increased hours would not affect this.
The licencing hours should be extended to the maximum possible for the area.
Sydney needs to grow into an international city once again. Our current licensing laws are bizarre on an international scale and are stifling creativity and community growth.
Please allow the Bearded Tit space also - to remain viable.
    Thankyou
    Dr Gary Nicholls

Despite trading through very difficult times, the Bearded Tit has never wavered from providing a space for musicians, DJs and performance artists one of the very few remaining venues to hone their craft in front of supportive audiences. It's a vital part of Sydney's creative life and definitely deserves the chance to extend their trading hours.

  33. Andy Lysle commented

The bearded tit is such an important part of our local community, please don't restrict the hours. It's an awful time for bars, nightlife and the nighttime economy at the moment in Sydney, the bearded tit has battled through this and created the perfect space for us to enjoy. To restrict their hours and ability to make a financially sustainable business is just another reason why people will leave this city, it's getting way too boring to live here.

  34. Shannon commented

The nearest it is a sydney institution. There is no other space like it in sydney. It is a bubbling queer hive of art and culture. Its quirky and unique. It creates a space for people to feel safe to gather. It's also what I believe Australia to be. A small business. A business that thrives in the community. Where the owner knows you by name. A space where you are welcomed with open arms for you choose to be at that time with no judgement. This is a space that has had blood, sweat and tears poured all over it. A labour of love. By allowing this space to stay open later you a creating an opportunity for community and for small business to succeed. I believe a space like this deserves to chance to succeed.

  35. Rachel Buckeridge commented

I love the bearded tit and hope it can have longer opening hours.
Its such an open and friendly and creative space and there arent many of them around these days.

As an openly gay male growing up in the city of Sydney, there wasn't many places I felt comfortable in taking a date or a partner. I avoided most places and drank in parks or car parks. Before heading out to a club or a party. Darling harbour is dangerous on the weekends, the CBD is over priced, kings cross is over and Oxford st was fun but not the place to go and have a quiet drink or see live music for free.

I applied for a job at the bearded Tit when it opened and I was one of there first bar staff. As some one who worked there from the begging I witnessed this heaven sent astablishment grow in to something that Sydney so desperately needs right now. Not only is it a place for EVERYONE, it is a safe space. Where no one is judged, where being part of the LGBTQIA community is selebrated with your fellow heterosexual sisters and drothers from all different backgrounds. You can be you with out fear of cat calling or abuse. Where everyone of all ages can come together have a drink and witness some of Australia's up and coming performance artists take you on a journey in to a hole new wonderfull, wacky, sexy world.
The Bearded Tit became my home, the people I met working there will be my friends forever and Joy, Emma and Pete will be my family for life. Words can not describe how much love and respect I have for them.
Forcing The Bearded Tit to close at 11 has seriously affected the bar. It might seem like nothing that extra hour, but preventing The Bearded Tit from closing at 12 will begin the effect of closure on to not only a Time out awarded best Local bar winner, but a place that young and young at hart now come together as a community.
Please let The Bearded Tit stay open until 12. Please don't destroy one of the only bars in Sydney that has a hart.

  37. Lachlan Herd commented

Consistently reviewed as one of the most interesting and important sites for a public arts and cultural experience in Sydney. Would be an even better contribution to the city if it could stay open longer but should definitely remain open until midnight at the very earliest.

  38. Mischa Arnold commented

The Bearded Tit is the most inclusive, vibrant, original venue in we have seen in Sydney in years. It is a vital part of the shrinking pool of live music, art & performance venues where artists of all disciplines can showcase their work in a live setting. In a short time the Bearded Tit has become recognised for its unique cultural contribution to Sydney - a city that has become parlously bereft of opportunities for artists to develop in a time when we have seen live venues die by the week. I have always noted management and staff are at pains to stringently observe all regulatory obligations and laws. The Bearded Tit is a jewel that Sydney can be proud of. Less operating hours may genuinely put this incredible venue at risk of non viability. I support restoring original trading hours, and I know that everyone who has been to this venue feels the same way. The Bearded Tit is a cultural heart of Sydney for many people. Please restore The Bearded Tit's operating hours. Better still, extend them so they can do even more wondrous things for this city :)

  39. Adrian Burnett commented

Trading hours that extend to midnight are essential for small businesses like the 'Bearded Tit' to be viable and to meet the needs of the community that it serves. Support for this venue has built steadily and organically and it's now 'the' place to take interstate or international visitors for a taste of Sydney that is more than just a picture postcard. Us locals love it too. It's inclusive, super fun and managed by people with integrity who deserve our support and loyalty so please, let's keep her open well past our bedtime!

  40. Gethryn Ghavalas commented

This is a responsibly run venue that provides a safe place for many to enjoy. Wholly support extended trading hours being reinstated.

  41. Grant Rasheed commented

Please we need this venue The Bearded Tit. It supports a whole community.

  42. Chris Sims commented

The Bearded Tit is a great and welcoming venue that is helping the rejuvenation of Redfern and improving overall street safety in the local area. As a former nearby resident from across the road I can still remember the day when it opened and my friends and I all rejoiced that there was a perfect addition to the street's original stalwart Arcadia Liquors. Not one but two great venues to spend an evening or afternoon relaxing in, while supporting other local restaurants as well. The vibe at The Tit is one of friendliness and community and it's a rare gem in the Sydney bar scene, so much so that I continue to travel there from across the city. Plus I haven't even mentioned the great support for live music yet! Please allow their extended hours to be approved again as the venue does not have a troubled history with complaints or violence. It should serve as an example to others about how to operate a great small bar that adds to the city's positive offerings. Closing at 11pm is ludicrous for a respectful operator in a global city in an urban suburb.

  43. Elise Barton commented

I've had nothing but positive experiences at the Bearded Tit. The staff and patrons make this a respectful, friendly and inclusive venue with a strong community atmosphere. The bar's contribution to Sydney's arts & culture is invaluable, and it's a great supporter of local artists.

I strongly support the approval of this application.

  44. Laura McLean commented

I support the extension of trading hours for The Bearded Tit. It is an important hub for the queer and art community as well as many others, and a unique and much appreciated bar and business. Sydney is lucky to have it.

  45. Sean Greenhalgh commented

As someone who grew up in the area i belive the bearded tit is a great adition to the local community. With friendly staf and an inclusive atmosphere, I would like to see this venue remain apart of the community and be allowed to operate until at least midnight.

  46. ASR commented

The Bearded Tit is precisely what makes Sydney great. It's local, its queer, it's fab. You really can't have an international, 'world' city when inner city bars like this have to close at 11pm. Residents in Redfern and surrounds have dealt with a lot in their time - now they get to enjoy The Tit. That's all we all want to do. Sydney can't be all RSL's, service stations and Westfields. Seriously, restore the hours of operation for the Bearded Tit. Thanks.

  47. Glenn Boyce commented

I live in the apartment block a few doors down from the bearded tit and love the bar. Its great to be able to call it my local. The staff are always super friendly. The atmosphere is always enjoyable and the bar has been a great addition to the area.
I would love to see the bar receive later trading hours and continue to prosper.

  48. Karen Brennan commented

The Bearded Tit is a wonderful and unique addition to the neighbourhood bringing together diverse groups of people in a safe and harmonious place. It never loses its local feeling while being popular far and wide. I don't understand why the same hours don't apply to this business that apply to the other local bars. I fully support the application to extend the current opening hours. It will enrich our community to support businesses like the Tit.

  49. Jeffrey Stewart commented

The Tit provides everything a bar should: friendly efficient service , a great atmosphere and excellent drinks. Also as many others have said it is a space for art , live music and DJ's to work and flourish. It is a welcoming space and I can't imagine why it should be restricted to a midnight licence let alone 11pm. Please reconsider. I am a resident of the City of Sydney and it seems to me The Tit is everything that can and should be encouraged.

  50. Sam Jacobson commented

The Bearded Tit is one of the most inclusive, unique and vibrant venues in Sydney. Please consider extending trading hours as this local gem is critical to what is left of Sydney's cultural fabric.

  51. Monica Serci commented

The Bearded Tit is an inclusive space that celebrates the LGBTIQ+ community by providing a safe place that fosters art and culture with music, entertainment, and its unique aesthetic. I work close by to the venue, don't live too far from it either, and I enjoy frequenting it. I strongly support the bringing back of its original trading hours as restrictive hours of trade will have a negative impact on the establishment and consequently, the community.

  52. Grahame Lynch commented

An extra hour will improve the economics of a bar that caters for a community poorly served in the city of Sydney. It provides much needed work for DJs and performers, and clearly is a much valued part of its community. Please make it so

  53. Michael hewin commented

Yes please! This magical Redfern staple need's more opening hours. This place is a welcoming safe space that welcomes various walks of life and it's core values support its surrounding's and it's Family will support it forever.

  54. Adam Lewis commented

While I live a fairly short walk away (North King St, Newtown), I am a City of Sydney resident and have been many times to The Bearded Tit - a beautiful, vibrant bar near FBi Radio where I volunteer. It's exactly the kind of bar that Sydney needs - welcoming, inclusive, diverse, and creatively vibrant. It makes my city a better place, and I ask that the City of Sydney do everything in their reasonable capacity to facilitate its continued success - including continuing the extension of its hours.

  55. Gert Boel commented

When the music falls silent and the lights go on at 11pm on a Saturday night, a sense of puzzlement ripples through those present. Their limbs all geared up, the abrupt ending to a developing collective fantasy of boisterousness, unexpected encounters, heroics, antics and little dramas comes like a slap in the face. This was to have been their little universe for the next few hours, a place where they could have been Jim Morisson or Janis Joplin, or Scooter adamantly asking for the price of a fish, until sunrise (or at least until 12pm).

A healthy society breathes through its extravaganza. It's there where new pathways are exposed, not in the safe cocoon of a home entertainment-stacked living room. So, for the sake of Sydney's future, give the Tit back its 12pm closing time.

We'll dance one for you if you do.

  56. Kate Wilson commented

This is the sort of place our city needs, if we are to retain any sort of culture. This is a safe, inclusive spot and I wholeheartedly support the Bearded Tit in their endeavors.

  57. Laura commented

The Bearded Tit is a vibrant and important part of Sydney's culture. I fully support returning to original opening hours.

  58. Shannon Stoddart commented

Please please please let the bearded tit stay open till midnight. Sydney boasts of being an international city but really, 11pm curfew in the City of Sydney? We need the vibrancy and energy of this wonderful place. Voted as one if Sydneys top 10 bars For consecutive years. It is embarrassing that the council makes them shut at 11pm.

  59. Niall Barlow commented

The Bearded Tit has been, since it opened, an inclusive, community focused and safe place for patrons from all walks of life to come together in a unique venue, and which I believe has been a great addition to the Redfern area. Allowing the Tit to stay open later would show that City of Sydney supports small businesses, supports small bars being integral to developing communities in our city and supports local culture. This much loved small bar must be given the support from council to allow it to succeed.

  60. David Jay commented

I enjoy visiting the Bearded Tit. It is community friendly, supports Australian music and has a positive queer vibe. The impression I get is its owners care a lot about the way their Bar fits into the Redfern milieu - they are deliberately thoughtful of the local environs and support the local community. That is a rare commodity in an industry that is not known for its community consciousness.

I support extending the opening hours to midnight. Community is a two way street City of Sydney Council. The Council should supports businesses that support the Redfern Community.

  61. Rory Jackson commented

Sydney is in desperate need of venues such as the bearded title, that are committed to providing a unique experience to the Queer community & beyond, celebrating the creative culture which is sadly lacking in this once vibrant city.

  62. Jacob Habib commented

The Bearded Tit is a thriving local bar. It services a vibrant and diverse community by supporting bands, performers and artists. I've lived and run my business on Cope St for more then 20yrs, many other local businesses rely on the value capture created by this extended hour and increase in foot traffic. Our entire area on the precipice of unprecedented re-development and our council needs to support and facilitate our community.

  63. Sarah Rugnath commented

An extra hour for a unique arts bar is a boon for Redfern - as a little cation that celebrates diversity, we need this.

  64. Stella (Alison) Topaz commented

Such a well loved and well cared for pub, welcoming local talent and fostering community - this place is important to so many of us who need places to gather, to belong, to be amongst creativity, art, music, performance ... the bearded tit can manage longer open hours due to the respect management has for its local community & neighbours, and how this is shated by those of us who go there.., a true neighbourhood pub. I support longer open hours.

  65. Oriana Romero commented

This is another regressive time for local bars. Sydney is becoming the most boring place to go out at night. When people move to a neighbourhood they should consider that bars and pub are there before and that the time of opening should be respected. Not for every complaint bars are being penalised. I would support keep the bearded tit to its original opening hours, as it's a vibrant and original bar where people can meet and give some entertainment back to the community

  66. Francois S commented

I've travelled accrossed the land and the world, through many continents and culture and I'm happy to say that the 'Tit is the most wonderful looking and nicely designed venue that I've ever seen.

The Tit is a highly enriching addition to the community, a space that is inclusive and is not driven by profit. This is a place where people are free to express themselves and in a world characterised by political messes and terror, safe spaces to express art and self are needed more than ever.

I thoroughly support the trading hours of the Bearded Tit to be extended.

  68. Jason Hood commented

Excellent and necessary meeting place for a variety of communities, including the arts, lgbtqi and queer friendly to name a few, a very friendly edition to Redfern and well deserving of all the praise here. I support an extension of business hours for the Bearded Tit.

  69. Patrick Makenen commented

Part of the neighborhood and a safe community space, the bearded tit since day one has done all it's can to have respect for all whether it's inside or out of the establishment. They try their best to make sure their surrounding neighbors don't wear the burden of late noise, but should also be allowed to stay open according to the law as well as similar venues around Redfern.

  70. Joseph Toltz commented

As someone who has lived in Redfern/Alexandria for over 20 years, I have observed the way in which The Bearded Tit has transformed Regent Street and our neighbourhood. It is a friendly, well-managed, responsible bar where all people are welcome. It brings artistic expression and a sense of humour to our street. It provides entertainment and joy to many people. It is a responsible and friendly neighbour. It enriches the experience of living in the area. I support its modest request for extension of opening hours. The Bearded Tit needs to remain financially viable. It's closure would be a cultural disaster for the Redfern area.

  71. Michael Sprott commented

As an openly straight man, I feel hugely welcomed and comfortable at The Bearded Tit. It is a place to meet friends and mix with a diverse group of people. This is a most welcoming and safe place.

It is a place of wide community where I have met indigenous legends and local people. A modest extension of hours for this small bar would create more chances for these meetings to happen.

  72. Jimmy Jones commented

The Bearded Tit is everything Sydney should be encouraging in a small bar. The owners and staff have the greatest respect for their neighbourhood and patrons. I support the return to the original longer opening hours

  73. Mike Williams commented

The Bearded Tit has become a cultural staple for a community. It's reputation extends beyond Australia. One could compare it to San Francisco's Eagle Tavern which was resurrected as a venue because of the service it provided for the San Francisco community. Venues like this require flexibility, especially with regards to economic viability and I can imagine that a small increase in hours would support this. Sydney has witnessed the closure of significant cultural venues and the effect it's had on the community in a variety of ways. The council needs to service the cultural needs of it's predominant communities. Any support is significant.

  74. Gypsy Taylor commented

it would be a great disappointment to all locals in his area and lovers from the outskirts to restrict The Bearded Tits opening hours. It is the most positive and inclusive environment Sydney has to offer and to limit the hours where friends can gather together is heartbreaking to many :(

  75. Joanne Bezzina commented

I support the proposed trading hours change as put forward by the Bearded Tit.

  76. Gavin Prendergast commented

The bearded tit is a unique, friendly and essential part of creating a safe and vibrant night life in Sydney. Extending the trading hours will only enhance the sense of community one feels when visiting the bar. The staff are well organised and trained and very considerate of the neighbours. Extending the trading hours will only enhance our city. Please consider it.

  77. Shaun commented

The bearded tit is not only a venue but also a safe space for the LGBT community to feel comfortable in the community. The venue allows the community to use art to express themselves in a non judgemental and non aggressive environment.

  78. Sarah Gilder commented

The Bearded Tit is a respondsibly run establishment enjoyed by many in the community. I support the re-establishment of their opening hours till midnight.

As a long term resident of Redfern (20 years) I have watched an amazing transformation occur that has welcomed me and my community and given us safe, vibrant and inclusive spaces. The Bearded Tit is at the heart of these, and I fully support its application to continue trading with the hours put forward.

  80. Derek Gilchrist commented

I live in Edinburgh, Scotland, but lived in Redfern until Aug 2016. I frequented the Beard Tit regularly. It was my local. There are lots of pubs round Redfern but I used to go there because it offered the most positive and inclusive atmosphere of any place in Sydney. I felt safe there, and enjoyed meeting the creative crowd that gravitate towards it. The staff, Djs and management are about as awesome as they could be, so I have no doubt that they, and the regulars, would enjoy an extension of opening hours responsibly. I strongly support the approval of this application.

  81. Jason Tuckwell commented

The Bearded Tit is an incredibly vibrant, community focused local venue that provides a supportive space for the Sydney arts community, in particular. It has furthermore played a significant role in the transformation of the general Redfern neighbourhood, significantly contributing to the unique character of the local environment. It has established an international reputation and is a genuine cultural asset to the area, in addition to being a particular success of the small bar movement. It would send a very poor signal in the transition to smaller, locally focused venues for one as successful as the Bearded Tit to become financially unviable due to restrictive opening hours.

  82. John Simpson commented

The Bearded Tit is NOT a drinking hole full of beer swilling yobs who create havoc and disturbance late at night. The Bearded Tit is a jewel that Sydney can be proud of. It supports and encourages the performing arts and should be encouraged to grow. Less operating hours may genuinely put this incredible venue at risk of non viability. I support restoring original trading hours, and I know that everyone who has been to this venue feels the same way.

  83. Ollie Ansell commented

The Bearded tit is the finest example of a community venue that Sydney has to offer. An inclusive space that actively supports local artists, performers and suppliers, the Tit will always be my local. I strongly support this proposal.

  84. Theresa Caruana commented

I love coming to the Bearded Tit every time I am in Sydney. It is a well-run establishment that is welcoming and supports local artists and musicians. It deserves to have an extension to its hours, to keep a viable and safe meeting place for all.

  85. Kirsty Mootz commented

The Tit is a wonderfully inclusive, diverse place to grab a delish cocktail and hang out with friends in a safe and fun environment. As Redfern grows and develops the small bars that have encouraged people to come and enjoy Redfern before it was cool, really deserve to flourish and grow. Sydney would be poorer without the magnificent Tit!

  86. Jehan Kanga commented

In just a few years, The Bearded Tit has become an iconic inclusive LGBTIQ space, welcoming patrons and artists to Redfern.

I lived in Redfern from 2013-2015, and am moving back to Turner St this Saturday after buying an apartment just around the corner from the Tit.

The Bearded Tit has supported several young and emerging, and established Australian live performance artists, and has helped provide a safe venue for experimental work. Artistic space of this kind is extremely rare and the wider Australian community both in Sydney and across other capital cities greatly benefit as it has become a touring hub for performance artists.

As a venue, because it is a safe LGBTIQ space, the culture of patrons is always respectful. This is the late night culture we need in Sydney. This is the model for responsible drinking we need more of.

Additionally, The Bearded Tit has supported many community organisations. They hosted Pash.tm's and ACON's all day photo shoot, closing the bar on a Saturday in order to support transmen's visibility in the wider community.

Please support this vital venue, one of the most important new venues for the rainbow community and our allies.

  87. Lindsay Webb commented

The Kings Cross to Redfern train line makes The Bearded Tit my local so I can escape the drollness of real estate agents and executive assistants that (counter) progressively dominate my neighbourhood.

If Transport NSW can keep the trains running after midnight, then I don't see why The Bearded Tit should close beforehand. It makes no sense.

Please correct this as soon as possible.

  88. Matt Vaughan commented

The Bearded Tit has provided a unique, genuinely inclusive, and important community gathering space since it opened. It balances being a vibrant venue that provides a much needed home and platform for many artists, performers, djs and musicians, whilst always being respectful of the neighbourhood environs it has made its home in, and undoubtedly enhances. I fully support this proposal for an extension of trading hours to help ensure its ongoing success and bring the trading hours in line with the general trading hours of small bars.

  89. Paris commented

The Bearded Tit is vital to the local community. Safe, vibrant and inclusive, it's a haven for the queer community and women, it also supports emerging visual, audio and performance artists who need small venues which are otherwise disappearing. The operators have also generously made it available for events that otherwise would have struggled to find a home. It has been such a welcome addition to Sydney and remains essential. Extended hours ensure its sustainability and give Sydneysiders a much needed alternative space.

  90. David Scanlon commented

Responsibly run, quality venue. We need more like it in Sydney.

  91. Alex Barry commented

A lot has been said above about the Tit's uniqueness as an inclusive and artistically rich place, all of which I agree with. It is also a safe venue that entertains its clientele in a responsible manner. To close earlier is denying the community the freedom to enjoy that space.

I think the bigger issue with respect to the trading hours is the financial risk to the owners. Three fewer primetime hours of freedom to be outside will mean fewer drinks purchased. One hour less of trading inside will mean fewer drinks purchased. This is a licensed venue that survives on bar sales, that pays its staff, artists and DJs with bar sales. Losing its extended hours may well tip the balance for this venue and force it either to compromise what it's doing (for instance, support fewer artists) or to close.

The community needs venues like the Tit. And responsible business owners deserve encouragement and support from council to keep providing safe and culturally rich spaces for that community.

Please extend the trial of later trading hours.

  92. Andrea Makris commented

I sincerely hope Council is genuine in its commitment to enabling local businesses and the City's nightlife to thrive. This small measure will be a step in the right direction. Venues such as The Bearded Tit happen organically, sprouting from the community and supported by the community. All council needs to do is stop obstructing. Please.

  93. Rebekah Golsby-Smith commented

This venue shows the best of the Redfern community ; inclusive, respectful and creative. The gift of FREE live entertainment, very reasonably priced food and drinks, and such a friendly
Environment is becoming scarce in inner Sydney suburbs, and this venue is something to be cherished and protected. I take my my parents, who are from Lindfield on the Northside, to the tit and they love it, and will be making their own comment here. It's for everyone.

  94. RICHARD STONE commented

Small, friendly, and with very good taste in who it hires to play music and to serve its patrons.
It's a genuine benefit to all to have the Bearded Tit in our neighbourhood.

  96. Travis Johnson commented

I support extended trading hours for The Bearded Tit.

  97. Grace Barr commented

I strongly support the proposal for extended business at the Bearded Tit. The Bearded Tit is a safe, inclusive and important venue that supports performers throughout Sydney who may otherwise not have a place to go. It is essential for the community of Sydney and Redfern for venues like these to stay open for longer hours so that the business can survive.

  98. Simon Aveling commented

As someone who has volunteered in the community sector in Redfern for two decades I've seen a lot of change. The current wave of overdevelopment via State government bodies and their simultaneous closure and relocation of much public housing will lead to a less integrated community, in a place long proud of it's egalitarian nature. When The Bearded Tit opened on this stretch of Botany Road it immediately made a wonderful difference - welcoming old and young, locals and visitors, the well-off and the broke, indigenous mob and folks from everywhere else on earth, queers and straights, lonely individuals and groups of mates. Inside, amongst enlightened and playful art and entertainment - in this beautiful hand-made parlour of creativity - all of those people are given equal respect. There they mingle, talk, laugh, marvel and move. Perhaps because it was a passion-project devised by friends for cultural, rather than business, reasons it has selflessly served to integrate the community at this time of trouble and flux. I felt safer walking down that street than ever with those folks around late at night. Yet their hours were truncated and staff and artists had to be laid off. Concerned, I talked to the owners about this and their miniature profit margin was obliterated by being forced to move people inside (from the gorgeous communal garden out the back) early then close the whole bar by 11PM (an unheard of hour in that business - especially in supposedly cosmopolitan Sydney - it barely allows time for a drink after dinner for those who work late or commute). Consequently already struggling local creatives have less work and the whole place has had a shadow over it due to economic stress and less entertainment - eroding the very bonhomie that won The Tit a city-wide Best Bar award in it's first year of operation. Please rectify this glaring over-policing of the ultimate responsible and culturally contributive neighbourhood bar. They deserve a fair go at least, in fact ethical enterprise like this should be positively encouraged by a council touting proud progressive attributes.

  99. ELLEN PATTERSON commented

I strongly support to extend the trading hours of The Bearded Tit in Redfern. It is an inclusive, friendly and unique space that unites and inspires members of our community.

  100. Connie commented

Much has been said about the contribution The Bearded Tit makes to the local community and its inclusiveness. I would echo this sentiment, but I also wish to explain how this past 18 months of restrictions has affected the folks that get paid by this business.

I have been a bartender here from the beginning, I am an artist and I have lived in Redfern for 7 years and the CoS LGA for 15. The Tit has ALWAYS paid its artists, musicians and staff properly, uses the BEST QUALITY products when preparing its drinks and it is one of the only venues in Sydney that offers emerging and experimental artists supported opportunities to show and present their work. That's the commitment of the Owners and that has never wavered; it's always been about the community, which is really more like a family.

I've watched the Owners sit in meetings over the past year and a half wracking their brains about how to reduce overheads there, pay for extra soundproofing there, but never have they considered cutting back on the opportunity to provide PAID work for artists. Nor compromise on the quality and service they offer their patrons.

In the 18 months that these restricted hours have been in place, not only the Owners have suffered financially but the staff have all taken cuts in their hours and incomes to prop up the Tit until this gets sorted. That has direct impacts on the local economy beyond us: maybe we won't buy that coffee, or maybe we are short on our rent or we have to hold out for that piece of second hand furniture or that dress... restrictions like these slow everything down. The income stress is real. Some staff have taken 2nd or 3rd jobs, but no one has left unless it was to follow their destinies as amazing actors, yogis or artists. Because this place is so special.

Sydney is already an expensive place to live, and these restricted hours have affected the our little economy and the individuals who are supported through employment here. For an establishment that is run responsibly and doesn't want to sustain itself on the winnings from our nations gambling addiction, an extra hour is everything. Please reinstate the trading hours for outdoor and in.

The Bearded Tit has become a much welcomed, needed and loved venue in Redfern. Community events, art, local dj's and live music as well as a diverse, welcoming and friendly staff and clientele is what makes this venue so special. It is essential that small businesses and bars like The Bearded Tit are able to trade longer hours in order to remain viable and be able to grow the business. As an inner city resident who prefers small venues such as this over large pubs, I believe venues such as this The Bearded Tit are transforming the way communities socialise in a positive way. The night time economy boost in inner city neighbourhoods and the City that venues like this bring - benefits everyone. I wholeheartedly support the longer trading hours for this venue- and I hope for a positive outcome. The Bearded Tit brings community together!

  102. Finn O'Keefe commented

The Bearded Tit is Sydneys most important community-run small bar. It is a focal point for the LQBTIQ community and a safe and welcoming space for all. It supports local culture by promoting artists musicians and DJs. It is driven by an artistic vision and is quite simply unique. It deserves to have its full trading hours restored. In an environment where nightlife is increasingly being pushed to the margins by restrictive laws and residential apartment developments, more than ever Sydney needs to nuture venues like the Bearded Tit.

  103. Sam Gatsby Lim commented

I am a Chippendale resident. It is creative businesses like the bearded Tit that contribute to making this neighbourhood the creative hub that it is and a better place. We need to encourage a support arts businesses in Chippendale and make this the arts, entertainment and food hub we as a community desperately want.

  104. Nick Wales commented

The Bearded Tit is more than a bar, it is a community meeting place for artists, musicians and members of the local Redfern and wider Sydney community. This quirky and somewhat left field bar offers a welcoming environment for people with diverse sexuality and gender identifying backgrounds to meet in a safe and non judgemental context.

The past few years have seen a decline in performance opportunities for many of Sydney's musicians and DJs, The Bearded tit continues to support working musicians and DJs by programming live music and DJs performances giving a much needed context for those musicians to continue to hone their craft.

I support the application for longer trading hours as this will help to make the bar more financially viable. This in turn will enable the Bearded Tit to continue to enrich the Sydney cultural landscape by providing a much needed space to support working musicians and artists whilst also providing a safe space for a diverse clientele to meet and socialise.

  105. Samantha Groth commented

I love the Bearded Tit. It's really important to have a space for people to use and enjoy socially that is inclusive, celebratory of diversity, and most importantly fun. Please don't let this icon of Redfern leave the community.

The Bearded Tit is a venue, which acts not only as a bar, but a very important cultural hub for many people. On a daily basis it allows the community to gather in a safe space, which is incredibly appreciated in Sydney. Our city needs The Bearded Tit. Everyone who works in this establishment has made sure that they have positively contributed to their local community and they continue to do so! Now it is time that they get support from their local council and those in power! A 12am close would ensure that this award winning bar survives -- and trust me, you want it to survive because there is nothing like The Bearded Tit in Sydney.

  110. Garrick Charter commented

I would be devastated to see one of the few remaining queer-friendly, inclusive and ultimately safe nightlife venues disappear due to such. The zones for apparent violence-based lockout laws are well beyond this area, despite showing little success in it's aims regardless.

The Bearded Tit is a warm, welcoming venue run by visionaries dedicated to providing a safe, stimulating space for its patrons, and a platform for some of the cities great emerging artists, djs and musicians. I often bring interstate and international visitors here who, along with many locals, love this unique and dynamic cultural hub with its vibrant sense of community. We need to be supporting these types of venues in Sydney and the integrity with which they operate.
Its a shame that it struggles under such restrictive operating licensing laws and its embarrassing to explain to international guests thats its 'last drinks' at quarter to 11.

This bar is an important cultural institution, despite its relative youth. Not only is it a great place to socialise, it also contributes to the cultural life of our area. It is also very significant as a safe, queer space. It is, of course, welcoming to all of Sydney's citizens, but provides a special place for the city's marginalised to feel happy and safe.

As a respected and respectful institution, the Bearded Tit should be allowed to operate beyond its current hours.

The Bearded Tit is a wonderful addition to the Redfern community - and very much a stalwart for the LGBT community. We need more safe and creative venues like this in Sydney! The staff are nothing but considerate when it comes to controlling noise and is the best bar in Redfern. I fully support the extension of operating hours, and if any bar in Redfern should be granted this extension, it is definitely the Bearded Tit.

When i think of Bearded tit as a bar, it is definitely on the top if the list of the bars I'd take my overseas friends to. It offers a safe environment for everyone, it is very unique by its look and set up overall, with great dj's, beautiful outside area, good food and drinks. Bit my first thought of a Bearded tit is never a 'bar', it is a community. And for someone like me who moved to Sydney all alone six years ago, and for many other people with different stories, places like this are massively important on so many levels.

To grant the TIT licensing for another hour until midnight, you would be granting the city just a little bit more sunshine.

As a resident of Zetland & patron of the arts. I full support the application for extended trading hours. As a full time worker & part time emerging performer I find that I am often attending shows on week day evenings, many of these art shows/ performances involve emerging artists. It is very important for our city and our communities to have access to venues that can show case the arts. Restricting hours of venues restricts the type of events that can be held which has a flow on effect to emerging artists & the community.

Nothing in Sydney comes close to matching the atmosphere and all-time good vibes churned out by the lovely folk at The Bearded Tit.

Sydney has been told to go to bed too early when no-one is ready for sleep.

The Bearded Tit is an essential adult playground that brings local community people together as well as people that travel far and wide especially to be here. Pete and The Bearded Tit are living legends.

Keep this place open and alive for as long as possible. It's a real gem in Sydney's backwash of a nightlife.

  148. Nairn scott commented

Please let the Bearded Tit extend its trading till midnight. There are many exciting events at the Tit, but often I am excluded as my nursing schedule means often I would only make an event for an hour before closing. Workers who finish late appreciate later opening hours, and we should not be excluded from participating in art and culture that is vital to our sense of belonging in our city. And it makes little sense to close at 11 when nearly all other small bars in sydney close later. 11pm closing seems illogical on many levels.

  149. Annabel Lines commented

It is important for a city to remain relevant, offer differing experiences to diverse community. Part of the texture of a city is its nightlife, bar life and clubs are integral to community. Closing times of 11pm do not reflect how people llike to live in a city. It is disappointing that Sydney seems only to care about real estate and traffic. Other things need to be supported and promoted to make a city a desirable place to be. This was ncludes supporting people who start businesses like The Bearded Tit, a unique destination bar the owners have worked tirelessly on to create a unique and inclusive place.
It is a pertinent observation that so many comments on here are posted by ex Redfern residents (myself included). Does Council really want all these people leaving these inner suburbs?

The Bearded Tit is a safe and inclusive space for creativity, love and music. Please keep their original hours. They are a cultural hub, not a pub subject to violence or unruly behavior, and this should be considered when considering their hours.

The Bearded Tit is a rare and essential community space that fosters many different sub-cultures and niche interests in a safe space. It is the very definition of a model venue, I fully support their application and would like to see City of Sydney supporting the venue's efforts also.

Please re-extend the hours of the Bearded tit. It's such a beautiful, cultural, artistic, safe place where many feel at home. For it to compete in the small bar world that Redfern is becoming, it will need longer hours. Closing the doors doesn't make a sustainable business and by hindering this business in such a way you will help its demise. Again - please extend the opening hours of the bearded tit.

    Thankyou

The Bearded Tit provides a safe and welcoming alternative art space for performers and LGBTQI identifying people in a city with very few alternative art spaces left. These extended hours should be granted to continue to support the arts in Sydney.

Our city areas should be alive with arts, music and entertainment and not ghost towns after dark.

The Bearded Tit has through its numerous efforts brought a friendly, safe, social hub to the heart of Regent Street Redfern which was sorely needed. I opened a business 2 years go, The DEA Store across the road and down a little at 146 Regent Street and a contributing factor was that this great cultural and fun hub existed across the road. There are many other businesses on Regent Street, but its visible contribution to the fabric of the community by way of its consistently changing art installations in the front window, exhibition areas within the space, its motto of 'All Welcome' and the always professional efforts on behalf of the owners and staff to run a responsible, tight ship have completely re-invigorated the street without any public funding. They do not encourage negative social behaviours such as gambling etc, that other pubs do. Having such a friendly place in the middle the street with their professional doormen outside actually make Regent Street safer, and with extended hours even more so. Any council governing any area that had a desolate streetscape could only wish for an enlivening, safe and cultural hub such as this.

The Bearded Tit has won Bar of the Year in 2016.

Hi. I went to have a beer after work at The Bearded Tit on a Friday a couple of weeks ago and after I had exactly one (1) sip, the back garden was closed and I was moved inside at the ridiculously early time of 8pm. It was still daylight.

Please extend the opening hours so I'm slightly less ashamed of Sydney's terrible night life.

  167. Johanna Roberts commented

Aside from the obvious benefits of being able to continue to enjoy the Bearded Tit as bar with great music and an excellent and inclusive social hub, as a neighbourhood resident I also really appreciate their later opening hours as it means the street is still lively late at night when walking home alone from work. The Tit is not only a great place to get a drink, it also contributes to the culture of the area and functions as a safe space in all aspects of the term. I fully support their application to continue with their trial opening hours.

The Bearded Tit is one of the first establishments in Redfern that has the power to draw visitors from other suburbs. I for one have ventured from my neighbourhood solely to visit the Bearded Tit. This can only be a good thing for the suburb of Redfern, which desperately needs new visitors to turn around it's old image of a no-go area with nothing to do there.

  170. Tui Raven commented

It is the one place in Sydney that I can visit and feel at home in a socially inclusive and safe environment. It helps that my twin sister knows everyone! As a west coast dweller, I was a little surprised by the operating hours. I'm from the nanny state (WA), but we generally let our bars stay open until midnight, even the outdoors areas. 8pm is way too early to be sent indoors during summer, especially with daylight savings.

The Bearded Tit is a bar, not a cafe! Please extend the trading hours to something that more resembles a 'night life'.

  171. Martin Hocknell commented

Please don't thwart the attempt of a licensed venue to develop its identity as an integral part of the local and wider sydney community. I have lived in close proximity to the Bearded Tit for more than 2 years and it has been an absolute pleasure. The one thing that has annoys me the most about this incredible venue is the fact that it is forced to close its door so early. When recently showing some Interstate friends some of the great small bars there are to offer in Redfern, they couldn’t believe that last drinks were being called at 10:45pm at The Bearded Tit on a Saturday night…. What an embarrassment. How can Sydney City Council proclaim to be a ‘global’ city when it requires venues in such close proximity to the CBD to such as cease trading so early. This is 2017!

The main bar is set back from the street frontage and separated by a corridor so there are no unreasonable acoustic impacts created from people within the venue or ambient sounds that travels onto the street. Coupled with the implementation of the recommendations from the acoustic report, the venue is unlikely to create any adverse environmental impacts by the proposed increase in trading hours. It’s such a shame that the planning controls are so restrictive that venues such as these that provide nothing but a valuable community asset for people to be able to enjoy themselves and wind down are forced to have to apply for a ‘trial’ in order to extend their trading hours.

Whilst it’s acknowledged that the venue is in close proximity to a number of residential dwellings, majority of the people that have moved to the area or continue to live in the area, have done so because of the appeal of venues such as this and compliance with the conditions of consent ensure that the amenity of these residents will continue to be protected with the proposed extension of trading hours.

I support the proposed extended trading hours and would support a further extension to reflect what the majority of the community would like as exemplified by the number of submissions in support of this s96(2) application.

i have lived in sydney for 25 years and lived in Alexandria ( just around the corner from the Bearded Tit for 23 of those years. i can honestly say that prior to the arrival of the BT there was very few, if any, licensed premises in the area that i felt i could frequent. Personally the BT is one of the only places in Sydney that asks it's cliental to leave all prejudices at the door. it is a supportive and inclusive environment regardless of your culture, gender, place of birth, wether you are inside out or upside down you are welcome at the Bearded Tit. It is a place that I proudly take interstate and international guests to show off the good side of Sydney. It is place that is much needed in Sydney, as the world becomes more and more homogenised, the Bearded Tit is a beautiful and exciting point of difference that provides a texture to the cultural landscape of a city that can often get lost in the push for bigger is better, as corporations climb to the sky, the Bearded Tit keeps our feet on the grass and the community together.

I strongly support this application for The Bearded Tit to operate extended trading hours. The venue has built a unique space for the local community; contributes significantly to arts, culture, LGBTI community and a diverse night time economy in Sydney; and aligns with priorities of the City's Live Music and Performance Action Plan. Extended trading hours increases the venue's capacity to thrive long-term and contributes to the safe enjoyment of Redfern streets at night, for all.

I am an artist who has lived in the inner city for over 20 years; I am proud of what the Bearded Tit have achieved, fostering an all inclusive space for the community and making artists and their cultural contribution central to what they do and why they do it. The Bearded Tit care for their community and are a stunning example of what an artist led community are capable of making work in this tough city of housing inequality and rising austerity and restriction. I love dropping in to the Tit and being surrounded by so many inspired folk!

The Tit is a great bar that has a positive and welcoming atmosphere for all. There is no reason to restrict its hours. I have met many locals who live very close and love the Tit, treating it like their lounge room. This is one of the only places that people over 30 like to go in Sydney. I think that it would hurt this great establishment significantly to restrict hours. Please don't - there is no common good achieved, just a common detriment.

  202. M. Pompe. commented

The Bearded Tit is one of few bars that I feel safe going to alone as a woman. I've come back from a few months in New Orleans where even though I was on my own, I never felt alone. I think that due to the amount of bars around and their sense of community, they understand that just because a woman is out in their own, doesn't mean she wants trouble. I get a similar feeling at The Bearded Tit. There are so many places where women should feel threatened - most pubs, parks, anywhere at nighttime really, but The Bearded Tit is a friendly place that I can wonder into off the street at night time, on my own and feel safe. Reducing trading hours will lock me out and push me back into my home where I spend so much time already out of fear.

Also when will whomever is requesting the change ever be happy? In my observation people just push and push for more reduced hours until they snuff the joint out. We all wish we could control our environments at times. I wish there were less cars on the road near my house. Am I going to ask the council to shut down the road? You just have to learn to adapt to the environment you live in especially if you live in the city near a commercial zone.

Sydney has become such a joke, I would tell people about our lock-out laws overseas for laughs. I would tell them how near my old house in Newtown it was like some weird nightmare full of drunk and dangerous people wondering around the streets with nowhere to go. Forcing The Bearded Tit to shut down through these changes will make Regent Street the creepy and unsafe street that it always used to be, and contributed to the creepy city that Sydney has become.

  203. Julia Kingston commented

I fully support the Bearded Tit continuing to have long trading hours. As someone who has worked in the area and who continues to frequent it, well-run and community-orientated small bars and other nightlife like the Bearded Tit contributed enormously to the community.

The value of The Bearded Tit to the Redfern local, queer and the art community is enormous. It provides a safe space for those of us who can't go to any corner pub; it starts real conversations about our world through its curated art and performance and quite simply - showcases the best aspects of what Sydney is about. It's so important to enable venues to be financially viable in order to continue bringing people together in such a positive manner. Approving the extended trial hours until midnight (and 10pm outside) will ensure that our community can continue to support but more importantly be supported by such an outstanding business.

The Bearded Tit is an open, inclusive, peaceful and joyous place to spend time. It is precisely the type of place that should be supported by a progressive and positive council that wants to help foster a culture of fun and positivity. It provides an atmosphere where people are safe and can spend time with friends and like minded people and listen to live music or DJs and can enjoy themselves. People that live in the inner city need to respect the fact that there was culture and art before there was real estate and gentrification- especially in Redfern and other inner suburbs of Sydney. Maintaining the shortened trading hours of this bar would be short sited and reductive, places like this need to be allowed leeway to provide spaces for artists, musicians and other creatives to flourish, as well as for people to have fun nights out.

The Bearded Tit has been a huge contributor to the re invigoration of Redfern and the community. To be viable The Tit needs to revert to the original opening hours. This bar adds to the local neighbourhood by welcoming local residents every night of the week. By not taking private events, they're a place residents can always count on to be warm and welcoming. When you add that they celebrate live music, offering paying gigs to some of Sydney's musical artists, and diversity by not tolerating discriminatory behaviour, you have a pretty top spot. I also commend them on their food offering celebrating food from local restaurants - very community minded and an asset to the area. At no time have I found the bar patrons to be overtly loud or disruptive to the local area, so I fully support the application for extended trading hours.

The Bearded Tit is a unique and artistically rich establishment that forms an important part of the cultural fabric of both the local and broader community. The extended trading hours proposed would still be considered conservative in any other international city. Reducing the opening hours of this venue threatens its viability to continue operating, and it would be a huge loss to Sydney for this welcoming, safe venue to close. Please restore the Bearded Tit’s trading hours. Thank you.

The Bearded Tit is a unique venue, like no other in Sydney. It is a quirky, artistic and above all friendly and inclusive space. Sydney is in dire need of more bars like this one. It would be ridiculous not to continue its current trading hours, you might even want to consider extending them.

I am a producer of major cultural events with 10 years experience working Sydney. I have also worked as a representative of small local business for a local association. Unique, friendly, creative and inclusive businesses like the Bearded Tit are the essential lifeblood of the city. They give the city its character and make areas like Redfern desirable for investors, developers and residents. I urge you to approve the extension of the trial as proposed.
Furthermore I recommend that the trading hours be permanently approved, as the first trial has already been proven successful. Global cities have night time economies. Trading until 10pm or midnight should not be considered of high impact in an Inner City district on a main road. Small businesses like the Bearded Tit should have easier access to trading hour approvals until midnight and should instead be given the opportunity to apply for even later trading, until 2.30am.

  228. Blake Lawrence commented

As a performer the Bearded Tit has offered me a place and audience to experiment and develop new work in a safe, inclusive environment. I would love to see more careers develop with longer opening hours generating more options for artists.

I don't always feel comfortable in other pubs, while TBT's unofficial policies around acceptance and non-discrimination always make me feel embraced. Sydney needs more pubs like this.

I also work long hours, similar to shift work, in disability services, often finishing work at 9, 10 or 11pm.. I would love if TBT was an option for me on these nights, though often it is closed, or close to closing.

I can't speak highly enough of this venue and their contributions to the lgbtiqa communities and the emerging arts.

  230. Caroline Fox commented

The Bearded Tit is a vital part of our inner city. The owners and staff have worked incredibly hard to create a venue that is inclusive, inspiring and vibrant. They support talented artists, performers and musicians in a city that can be very unsupportive. All of this happens in a venue that is a safe space in all senses of the word.

Although I now live on the other side of the city, I travel for over an hour specifically to visit The Bearded Tit. It would be a great loss if this venue becomes yet another to close due to gentrification and non-sensical laws.

I have been frequenting this establishment on occasion pretty much since it opened. With the lock out laws in place through Kings Cross and Newtown being now overrun its important that places in Redfern are open so locals can enjoy a night out.

  235. Sue Carey commented

The Bearded Tit has earned a unique place in our community. Allowing it to continue its current trading hour can only benefit Sydney's social and cultural life.

  236. Emily Lloyd-Tait commented

The Bearded Tit is a shining example of what a neighbourhood bar should be. Friendly, welcoming, community-minded and respectful. They bring music and art into the neighbourhood and attract like-minded folk. They are skilled operators and an asset to Redfern.

  237. Alyx Gorman commented

The Bearded Tit acts as a home base for the local arts community. Whether it's displaying works of visual and performance art that will later been seen at Sydney Opera House (as they did recently with Ali Sebastian Wolf's 'Glitoris') or hosting a night of Neil Young covers, this venue takes programming risks few others in Sydney would dare to - and those risks pay off.
The Bearded Tit contributes to the vibrancy and diversity of Sydney, in exactly the way small bar laws were envisioned to enable, though under the letter of the law the venue is not a small bar, in spirit it performs the same function. The Bearded Tit keeps culture alive, it provides a welcoming environment for queer people, and it's a venue I'm proud to show off to international guests. It is exactly the kind of venue that should be granted late trading. I am no longer a resident of the Bearded Tit's LGA, but I remain a frequent visitor. I strongly suspect that, like me, all those who come to the Redfern area to visit the Tit are mindful of being as respectful of the neighbors and community there as possible - that's part of the positive effect a well run venue can have.

  238. Dr Lian Loke commented

The Bearded Tit is home to such a wonderful community of gentlefolk, from all walks of life. The owners are passionate about supporting community, the arts, live music and providing a space, a safe haven, for people to gather, converse, laugh, meet old friends, make new friends, make art deals, dance, make merry - and generally contribute to making Sydney a great place to live (in spite of all the draconian laws and attitudes in place that seem to be getting worse not better).
As many other supporters have stated, having a welcoming bar/space like the Tit open on Regent St LATE at night, makes the streets more safe, less threatening, especially for women and LGBTI people. I want to be able to catch the train, walk down the street and go to this super friendly bar without feeling like I might get mugged or raped. The later this venues are open, the better for improving street safety.
Extending the bar's opening hours to match the other bars in the area is essential for it to remain a viable business. It adds so much to the community, that if it is forced to close (which is most likely if trading hours are not extended to at least midnight), it will be a mighty loss indeed. I know I have wanted to go out, it's 10pm, and because the Tit has to call for last drinks at 10.45pm, I decide not to go, possibly taking my business elsewhere, to their detriment. I would hope that the City of Sydney would go a step further and really support small bars and businesses to remain viable and vibrant. There are too many regulations in this city, that kill one's spirit. Please support the Bearded Tit by extending its hours as much as possible.

  239. Rob Defnet commented

The Bearded Tit is a wonderful establishment that would be a Drawcard Anywhere in our Urban environment . A true magnet for the community ... Given that it has helped revitalise a formerly " less than salubrious" area.. Any hindrance to this fine Community Centre would be a detriment to Redfern !

  240. Billie Muchmore commented

Sydney was in desperate need for a bar like The Bearded Tit. The aftershock of the lock out laws has been felt city wide, effecting not just patrons who want to live in a global city but would be bar owners who are faced with miles and miles of red tape.

The owners put themselves out on a limb to open The Bearded Tit, a safe space for many in my community. They did it because Sydney needed it. Its already hard enough to run a bar for a profit in a city that is shutting down and forcing these hours will make it even harder. For what? To appease all the new locals who have moved into their million dollar homes since Redfern's been gentrified?

The Bearded Tit gives Redfern (and Sydney) back its diversity and we need them to survive.

Our community is respectful, our community doesn't attack and kill strangers with one punch, our community supports each other and it is one of the best damn things about Sydney - so please don't make it any harder for us to live here and enjoy our safe spaces.

  241. M. Pompe.

  242. Victoria Brown commented

The Sydney community needs more places like the Tit. It's a welcoming and safe space for everyone and they support many artists, bands and diverse groups in Sydney. The current hours are limiting on the establishment and I wholeheartedly support the trail hours outlined in Section 96(2) for consent. There is nowhere quite like it LATE at night and there have been many times after an event or dinner with International guests that I have wanted to take them there but have been unable to because of the restrictive hours in place now. It's a shame (and kind of embarrassing), Sydney is a great city but not much to show off after the hours of 10:30 if you want to support a local small business. Bring back some of the night life, bring back the extended hours at the Bearded Tit!

  243. michealgraham commented

For a city that promotes itself locally, and abroad, as a jewel of artistic merit it would be a disappointing reflection of governing bodies if it was to limit the opening hours of such a diamond as the Bearded Tit.

BT has advanced the profile of artistic pursuit in our local area, and after a hardworking day or evening of producing the very stuff of culture I feel that artists and patrons deserve an extra hour of the excellent services that this establisment provides...

The Bearded Tit is the most welcoming venue for all members of Sydney's very diverse community! A place that supports the community through music, performance, the arts, food and extraordinary congeniality must be soppoted in this city of immense diversity!!
Shortening the trading hours works against all that our city needs!

  246. Julian Berengut commented

I support reinstating the extended opening hours for the Bearded Tit, which is a considerate, inclusive and responsible venue. I note that the current 11pm close is earlier than that for similar venues around Redfern.

  247. Marcelle Robbins commented

The Bearded Tit is the type of small bar that should be able to trade til midnight (or longer) and I fully support this application to return to later closing time. What I love about this bar the most is that it is a space for EVERYONE, and a safe space none the less. Since the beginning they have always promoted live music, DJs, art and performance and created one of the most wonderful, unique and creative spaces in Sydney – I love going there, they always make me feel like a local when I walk through the door.

  248. Sabrina Druecke commented

To me it is very important that The Bearded Tit be allowed to extend their trading hour and develop in accordance with their communities needs. Their support of Sydney's arts, cultural and ethnic communities is unique and encouraging. I am grateful for their role in helping Sydney to be a vibrant creative culture, something all of us can be proud of and i wholeheartedly support their application to extend their trading hour back to 12 am.

  249. Yvonne Moxham commented

The Bearded Tit has proven itself as a safe, inclusive and innovative venue. It's creative authenticity is well loved by locals, greater Sydney visitors and international guests. Beyond being a completely unique small bar, it provides a platform for Sydney artists and musicians in a way that no other venue in Sydney does.

The City of Sydney needs venues like this and we need it to be able to operate at hours beyond an early curfew of 11pm. I strongly support extending the trading hours so that The Bearded Tit can thrive and continue to showcase local talent.

  250. Blaize Major commented

Our city uses to be one of the most culturally diverse and alive cities in the world. Now we are an international embarrassment and it's all because of a few greedy developers/politicians. Do you want to be remembered as a progressive council who encouraged culture and community or one that killed a once great city. Seriously this is getting absurd.

  251. Sally Quade commented

The Bearded Tit is the pinnacle of what community and inclusiveness is about.

Having played records there as a dj from the start - I can safely say that it's a welcoming place of art, music and new friends.

Please allow the extended hours. This bar is one of Sydney's proudest achievements.

  252. Simon Hanna commented

The Bearded Tit provide exactly what this city needs more of – an inclusive venue where people can meet to share their ideas and diverse talents.
I am sure the current limitations on their operating hours unnecessarily limit their invaluable contribution to our city.
When I see other businesses that are allowed to remain open for late night trading, specifically those whose main interests appear to lie in the extraction of their customer's dollars through gambling, it seems grossly unfair that such strict limitations are placed on fine businesses such as The Bearded Tit who strive to build a sense of community.
Please provide the fair playing field that allows this business, and those like them, to compete and thrive or we may just lose them along the wonderful culture they facilitate.

  253. Kelsi Thompson commented

Longer opening hours are essential to growing a vibrant and inclusive demographic. As an ex-resident of Redfern and regular at The Bearded Tit I fully support longer trading hours for this fabulous venue.

  254. Joyce Murphy commented

The Bearded Tit makes such a unique and wonderful contribution to Sydney's nightlife. I was overjoyed to discover this incredible venue and only wish I'd known about it sooner! It's a place I love taking visitors from overseas, to show what Sydney has to offer and like others before me have said, it's welcoming, it's safe and it's so needed. I strongly support the application to extend its hours.

  255. Clare Cooper commented

The Bearded Tit is a sanctuary. As a business, it is being strangled by this trading restriction. The staff have been incredibly respectful of this limitation - making the call for "last drinks" abundantly clear and politely getting people moving out the door conscious of neighbours and their needs. I always feel safe and thoroughly entertained at the Bearded Tit. I support them in their entirely reasonable request to extend their operating hours.

  256. BEL MACEDONE commented

I fully support the trading of the Bearded Tit from 11pm to 12am. The bar is an incredibly respectful place with staff always conscious of reminding customers of leaving in a quiet and respectful manner. I have had some wonderful nights there and would appreciate the 11pm -12am hours due to work schedules, and I know many others would too.

  257. Rory Toomey commented

The Bearded Tit is a haven of humanity in a city currently driven, to all outward appearances, by real estate, money and acquisition addiction.
I've spent many a happy evening there and have never seen unruly or inconsiderate behaviour when it comes to the neighbourhood. In fact, most of the patrons are most likely from the neighbourhood themselves.
Having owned a venue/bar for 7 years in Kellett St Kings Cross, I understand how crucial the last hour of trading is to the bottom line. With shortened hours of trade the viability of the business will be severely challenged.
Please consider the future of this much loved haven of diversity, music and urban culture.

  258. Georgia blake commented

Please extend the opening hours for this venue. They provide a community atmosphere and a safe, comfortable space for many different types of people. We need to support businesses like this so they can survive.

The Bearded Tit is a well loved local pub and a hub for queer communities and artists. It is a rare find in Sydney; friendly, diverse and safe. Like many others, I also endorse it retain its extended hours which are essential to its survival.

The Bearded Tit is an integral part of the community in Redfern. They are a responsible server of alcohol as has been mentioned here before. I support the longer opening hours.

  264. Stacey Sharkey commented

This bar is a much needed safe space for a diverse range of minorities in the area. It is unlike anything else that I can think of in Redfern and although there are places in Newtown of this calibre it would be such a shame to lose it in Redfern, where it is just starting to gather a nice inclusive vibe itself. Losing this bar would do Redfern a huge disservice.

  265. Sallee Berry commented

The Bearded Tit has long been a go-to bar among my friends. It is such a vibrant, inviting, inclusive, safe and creative space. The people of Sydney should be supporting establishments like this and encouraging them to continue operating. Places like the Tit are the heart and soul of Sydney - they're what make our city such an amazing place to live in. I support longer opening hours.

  268. Susan commented

I live in a street-facing apartment a couple doors down from The Bearded Tit. Yes I hear noise, no it doesn't bother me at all. There are noisier things in the area than that pub. I CHOSE to live in a vibrant area and noise comes with it. If people want quiet they should do their research and move somewhere quiet, not near a bar that was already there, bad luck! I have absolutely no problem with the bar staying open much later, I'd actually prefer it. It's wonderful walking downstairs and having lots of cool bars to visit. Let people live and enjoy this short, crazy life.

  269. Sarah Kendell commented

I am a home owner who lives on the same block as the Bearded Tit and have never experienced any noise or disturbance coming from the venue outside of the usual that is expected on a Friday or Saturday night. The staff are friendly and respectful and patrons are generally well behaved locals out for a quiet few drinks. As a close neighbour I would have no objection whatsoever to extending the Bearded Tit's hours.

  270. Morgan commented

The Bearded Tit is a wonderful venue that exists as an inclusive and welcoming space for both residents and patrons of Redfern. I work and live in the area and fully support its request to reinstate its business hours until midnight.

  271. Stefanie Almgren commented

Please let The Bearded Tit have their extended hours, as a local of Redfern we need places in the community that support vibrancy & soul for all, this is our neighbourhood gem. Keep Sydney Open!

  272. Luke Liepa commented

Please extend the trading hours of "The Bearded Tit" from 11 to 12pm. It's an absolute disgrace that these hours were cut back to begin with and that you would rather listen to a bunch of sad, pathetic and ignorant individuals than protect existing establishments who actually contribute to the community.

  273. Ficustree commented

I support the application to extend trading hours at The Bearded Tit in Redfern. This bar is a unique space where art, music and individuality are celebrated. At the forefront of inclusion and diversity. An asset to our city - if only it could stay open all day and all night...

  274. Chris Familton commented

Sydney needs bars like The Bearded Tit. Inclusive, creatively focused on music, art and social interaction in a safe and relaxing environment. They do a superb job of it. I frequent and DJ in a number of Sydney bars and consider it one of the finest examples of what a small bar should be. Its current trading hours restrict its business opportunites and frustrate its willing and loyal customers and friends. Do the right thing and encourage art, culture and enterprise in a city that needs it now more than ever!

  275. Daniele Iezzi commented

I endorse the extension of The Bearded Tit's trading hours. Since it opened its doors in Redfern, The Bearded Tit has enhanced the amenity of the Regent Street area of Redfern, and provided a catalyst for other small businesses to open in the area. By opening longer, The Bearded Tit will also lead to more visitors to Regent street and to an increase in passive surveillance making this part of town safer.

  276. Sophie Thé commented

We need safe, original, creative and artistic venues in a city like sydney. Please consider extending the trading hours for the well being of this community.

  278. Dan Andrews commented

The Bearded Tit is a relentlessly friendly, respectful and peaceful cultural hub and meeting place beloved by the communities it serves. Sydney would benefit greatly from more establishments operating as respectfully and as well behaved as The Bearded Tit. Both for the communities it serves and it's continued viability it should be able to operate until twelve.

  279. Grace Marie commented

Hi this is a beautiful, safe space for all types of people in the vibrant Redfern community. It is inclusive and respectful. It is very important that it does stay open until midnight as that is still quite early for a night out. Even teenagers often stay up until midnight if they have to get up for school in the morning. The Bearded Tit would be respectful of neighbours and would not play really loud music right up until midnight. They are respectful, responsible people. Most live bands have played in the early afternoon or evening. Some people don't even eat dinner until 9pm if they have worked late. They need a few hours to relax and unwind at their favourite pub. Since we are dealing with adults over 18 and there is no history of violence or exploitation at the venue it would be nice if adults could make an adult decision to stay out until midnight. Locals would appreciate not having to leave the area for a drink. Thank you for your consideration.

  280. Louise Maloney commented

The Bearded Tit is more than just a bar, it is a live music venue, a gallery and performance space and a vital, inclusive and safe place for people to meet and socialise. The City of Sydney council needs to support businesses like the Tit, and the extension of trading hours will enable this wonderful venue to continue to operate and focus on what they do best: being a unique and awesome creative space and community hub.

  281. Eliza Reilly commented

I have worked and volunteered in Redfern for the past eight years. The last 3 have been such a breath of fresh air for Redfern because of The Bearded Tit. A safe, vibrant venue which has nourished the area. I feel a deep sense of cultural satisfaction after being there and have made invaluable friends, connections, collaborators and even met my partner James there! An hour trade means a great deal to a bar and I would adore contributing to this small business for that extra time. I wholeheartedly support this application.

Please approve the proposed trial trading hours extension for The Bearded Tit. It is a great community space and a fine example of a small bar serving locals and visitors to Redfern. It has a unique character and supports local music artists and visual artists in the area, providing a venue for their music and art, as well as providing a safe and welcoming space for its patrons. Thank you for your consideration and support.

  283. Morgan Carpenter commented

The Bearded Tit is an exceptional venue, one that gives life and grows community. Rather than being one-of-a-kind, it is exactly the kind of small venue that should be supported and encouraged by the City of Sydney and by other authorities. The proposed hours and music licensing do not seem unreasonable, but instead are comparable to those in Newtown and elsewhere in the city. Please support the venue's applications on trading hours and music.

  284. Noelle Faulkner commented

In city that prides itself on culture, yet increasingly seems to threaten that which takes place when the sun goes down, the restrictions on the The Bearded Tit's operating hours are unnecessary and, quite frankly, ridiculous.

Of all the pubs, clubs, bars and restaurants in the Redfern area, the 'Tit is one of the safest and most inclusive venues, providing entertainment, culture and support to local artists, musicians, performers, the LGBTIQ community and beyond. In addition to this, the service and experience provided by this small bar is of a level that puts it up there on an international scale —making it a wonderful place to show off to visiting international and interstate guests of all ages and interests.

All of the above is evident in the awards it has won (including a neighbourhood bar award), the positive reviews published by well-regarded arts and hospitality critics alike and the return business and local support it receives on a daily basis.

As a resident who lives within a 300m radius of this bar, I fully support the return to a midnight trade. The 'Tit provides the local community with more than just high-quality hospitality; it has singlehandedmy enriched culture and the arts in Redfern, and it would be a shame to see that go.

  285. John Michael O'Brien commented

There is usually something interesting going on the Bearded Tit whether it be an art installation, a show or a musical event. The prices are more than acceptable and the service is friendly and efficient. The owners are not absentees. At least two of them appear to be present most evenings. It is good place to visit and it has contributed significantly to bar-based entertainment in the area. It pays its performers. It would be much more viable as a community facility if it had its trading hours extended. We should promote bars like this that genuine community facilities.

I had a celebration of my 70th birthday there eighteen months ago. Nearly 100 people came. Those who had not been invited were welcomed. Everyone agreed that it was a great gathering with its mix of speeches, poetry, singing and instrumental music.

  286. Emma Levett commented

A respectful, vibrant and safe place for a drink and a social gathering with friends. This venue brings the community together and has been a great addition to the neighbourhood. I wholly support the additional, non restricted trading hours.

  287. Dan Turner commented

The Bearded Tit is one of the best bars in Sydney. The owners are passionate supporters of local artists, inclusive and respectful and have worked extremely hard to make it an artistic beacon and safe space within the Redfern Community. Please support the venue's application for extended trading hours.

  288. Luke Cutler commented

I write to support the application to trial extended trading hours for the Bearded Tit bar in Regent St Redfern.

As member of the GLBTI community The Bearded Tit (TBT) is my favourite bar above all others in Sydney, it is the place I take international visitors to see the best of Sydney, where I often go with friends pre or post show or dinner, it is my choice for a "first date". TBT attracts me to Redfern unlike any bar in Newtown, Enmore, Darlinghurst, Kings Cross or CBD. This has to be good for the economy of all Redfern businesses, the dynamics of Redfern and the safety of local residents.

TBT is a creative unique community hub promoting visual artist, video artist, performance artist, cabaret, live music and electronic music artist like no other bar which serves the GLBTI community. It is very important the bar is able to play amplified music at all hours of operation, it is part of the creative experience as TBT employs (at considerable cost) some of the best creative "DJs" who are sensitively attuned to the patrons and the mood in the room adding to the total experience.

TBT is a tiny venue, it is more like a wine/cocktail bar than a beer barn or nightclub and the amplified music is played at a level where the patrons can easily talk, I cannot see how this music can significantly impact on local residents.

As a small venue with a small number of considerate respectful patrons I am sure there is little impact on the street for local residents, in fact TBT probably make local streets safer than it would be without these friendly caring patrons coming and going.

As a tiny bar which financially invests in work for artist there is little opportunity for TBT to recoup their significant investment. Every hour TBT can trade is important to its ongoing viability.

It would be a tragedy to lose this unique venue which feels more like an expression of a quality lifestyle for the GLBTI community and friends than a commercial business.

I support the trial and permanent extended trading hours.

  289. Ivan Jordan commented

The Bearded Tit is Sydney's greatest 'Small bar'. With the introduction of the more sensible licensing laws a few years back the Tit has emerged as the perfect example of what these laws could achieve. An inclusive, friendly, cool, fun neighborhood bar. To restrict its hours, there by threatening its existence is a travesty!

  290. Christina commented

The Bearded Tit is a fabulous space that encourages sociability between all people. It is a venue that supports local artists and adds value to the community. Restricting its ability to trade is disintegrating the fabric of the community around it.

  291. Ruth Tedder commented

Please consider non quantifiable outcomes in the assessment of this situation. It's hard to measure the impact of safe, open creative spaces by modern day metrics. However societies have recorded the importance of the arts and community spaces since the Ancient Greeks. Modern European cities such as Amsterdam, Berlin and London have these metrics built into their budgets and measures of "liveability". Access to creative spaces is an essential ingredient to keeping a community alive, and an important antidote to prioritising the mortgage holder and rate payer as decision makers.

  292. Michelle Dodd commented

Please support urban living by supporting small businesses like the Bearded Tit to thrive. It's why we live in the inner city; to be with people who share our passions and love of art, music and community. The Bearded Tit fosters a space that allows that to happen safely, respectfully and with joy. Restricting business restricts that community.

  293. Nick Belshaw commented

As a resident of Redfern, I can confirm that The Bearded Tit is an essential piece of the cultural fabric here and one of the reasons why I moved to Redfern. It contributes more support to the arts, queer and music scenes than any other venue in the area. It is absolutely vital to a large part of the community and any further restriction to its trading hours would put the venue at risk of closure. Please restore The Bearded Tit's trading hours.

  294. Valasca Lehmann commented

This venue has genuine heart and culture. Unlike many coorporate designed venues targeted at a lucrative demographic this bar has grown out of collaboration between friends and artists who have created a safe space that they themselves would frequent if they were customers. It is a loved and valued part of the local community. Talking to indigenous locals they report the owners are considerate, respectful and welcoming "unlike some of the other establishments around here". This bar really should be able to open until midnight. It is small, well run, attracts well mannered guests, and is on a retail strip with few residences in the proximity.

  295. Kevin McLaughlin commented

I have been a resident of Redfern for 12 years and venues like TBT are a very welcome addition to the vibrant suburb that we want to create here. The bar is run responsibly and works to create an inclusive community environment.

  297. Michael Hartt commented

In this current age of lockouts, Sydney needs more bars like The Bearded Tit that foster a strong sense of community and inclusiveness among its clientele. The Tit is a great environment to meet friends and catch up over a couple of civilised drinks. It's not a nightclub, it's not a beer barn, it's a nice little local bar that brings people together.

As a local resident, I fully support The Bearded Tit's opening hours being extended. The venue is a great asset to the area.

  298. David Emerson commented

The Bearded Tit is a civilised and inclusive venue that provides a much needed space to meet at with friends and colleagues.

The fact that the commercial viability of the Bearded Tit is tied to 2 year trial licences and the classifying this venue as a bar highlights the sad misunderstanding that exists in popular Australia that small bars are venues that exist primarily for the purpose of selling alcohol and ignores the social and cultural value that it brings to the area. The Bearded Tits' programme of art uplifts the local area and enriches the neighbourhood and this venue should be given the full support of local council.

As a local business I fully support extended trading hours for this venue as the area in which it resides is a major commercial strip and the venue has always operated in a safe and responsible manner. The value this venue adds to the area should not be underestimated.

  299. Natasha Ferguson commented

I support the extended hours for The Bearded Tit, without these hours this small business will not be able to thrive. The Bearded Tit is a small venue that is part of the solution when it comes to late night economy and safety in Sydney. They provide a safe intimate space for their customers to enjoy. Not only do they have a 5 star Timeout Sydney rating but are truly dedicated to supporting local artists, musicians and the diversity of the community. To possibly lose this very special and unique venue due to restrictive trading hours would truly be a disservice to our community.

The Bearded Tit is not just a bar; it is a vibrant space that respects and embraces diversity, fosters a sense of community and cultivates creativity through its support of local artists. I am a business owner in Alexandria and my team and I have always enjoyed spending time after work at The Bearded Tit. It is a much loved Redfern venue, providing a small and intimate setting to meet with friends and hangout surrounded by great art and music. As a small and quiet venue they should be able to host their community for longer hours. I am in full support of them extending opening hours.

  303. Sean O'Brien commented

The Bearded Tit provides an environment for the local community which is safe, social and culturally minded, a distinct alternative to mainstream large format hotels in the area.

The presence of people on the street after dark, additional lighting and the increase of other late trading businesses on Regent Street has had a distinct impact on safety in the neighbourhood – we know this because our customers tell us they feel secure, whether returning late from work, from the cinema or from outside the area, they feel safe walking on Regent St because of the other people and late trading businesses.

When considering the location of our business, one key deciding factor was the presence of an active nightlife, such as restaurants and bars, in the neighbourhood. An overall increase in the presence of a night-time economy is crucial for Regent Street, for business and the vitality of the community. Every business on Regent Street relies and depends on one another to generate trade. If the Bearded Tit’s hours continue to be restricted, we fear for their longevity and the viability of our business and other businesses on the street.

I travel from Melbourne at least a few times per year to attend arts events in Sydney and always make it a priority to go to The Bearded Tit. We in Victoria are baffled by your inability to see that a thriving late night bar culture gives space and voice to and for a thriving, connected community. This is good for everyone in Redfern and beyond, regardless of whether they personally go to this bar or not.

Creating a culture that supports its artists is clearly what Australian's have asked for in the last year since the Liberal government stripped the Australia Council of its funding, only to have it reinstated recently.

Why deny the people not only what they want, but what they actually need? Especially when it stands to benefit businesses, locals and the council, by keeping Sydney a place that attracts tourists, artists, performers and dedicated patrons.

Give the Bearded Tit a fair suck of the sav. It'd be bloody Un-Australian not to

  305. Laura Hibbert commented

Establishments like The Beared Tit are the life blood of our community. The Bearded Tit creates space for music, art and performance and should be allowed to play music until 12pm. They aren't asking to play extremely loud music until all hours of the morning, it's simply until midnight, and inside! Please do not take away another great space for Sydney-siders to socialize and express themselves.
    Thank you

  307. Allison Bisshop commented

The Bearded Tit is an amazing and inclusive space, run by locals for locals - and has broad support within the community. In a cityscape desperately lacking in safe and respectful spaces to socialise and relax in the evenings, the Tit is a beacon in the fog. It's important that this bar be allowed to stay open. Midnight isn't too late.

  308. Jude Bowler commented

The Bearded Tit is my regular meeting place in Sydney. It's a small, well-run, unique, friendly, vibrant, safe, welcoming and supportive venue for ALL-comers - not only the many locals who adore it, but people like myself, who live rurally and work in Sydney. It's without pretence and actively encourages community building, diversity, respect, culture, art. After 25years as a queer inner-city resident, there's very little like it left in Sydney, and nothing like it where I live now. It’s a home away from home, with a heart to match. Midnight is not late – it’s almost that when you leave a cinema after a 9pm film! And for those of us working long days, that extra hour for us means extra business for them – for a such a small collaborative space, one call only imagine the difference that might make to the business. Please extend the trading hours.

I travel the world with my work and when I come to Sydney, I always visit The Bearded Tit, as it is a brilliantly unique venue, with great community spirit and internationally renound atmosphere, service and style, and of great value to Sydneys night life.

I love this place and am shocked that it's hours are being restricted so.
It is The Beated Tit, and other unique Sydney bars, that make Sydney an interesting place to world travelers and tourists, and it seems such a foolish way of shooting ones self in the foot to retrict the hours, and not support and encourage such a uniquely wonderful place of cultural value.

I hope that the council will look at the broader picture and recognize what a fine gem it has in this unique bar/venue, and see its value within sydneys night life.

Please do not allow the soul of the inner city be sucked out by gentrifiers. Even if the bar is newer than some of the residents, it is a country-wide accepted fact inner Sydney is noisy and full of night life. Allowing adults who grew up in St Ives turn the inner city into the silent suburbia they grew up in does all of us a mischief - where is creativity fostered, conversations had, parties continued if not for the traditional beating heart of the inner city, with all its roiling, noisy past. If people prefer a silent neighborhood at night, they need to move to the suburbs and let the rest of us who love the nightlife have the city suburbs back.

The Bearded Tit is a very inclusive place for anyone & everyone. A great bar, with a great atmosphere, so many different people from all walks of life bumping shoulders, sharing stories. I fully support the hours proposed. To have the hours they have at the moment must be so crippling to their business :( - Come on Sydney lets get back on track.

I'm a French citizen, embrassing the Australian lifestyle since 2010 with a special love for Sydney. There's something I don't understand between the specific, rich, villages vibes and the top down, non sense restrictions in Sydney night life. Please Keep Sydney Open, keep Sydney happy, keep Sydney dynamic, keep Sydney fun, keep Sydney attractive, keep Sydney what it is.

The Bearded Tit is a vibrant venue with lovely staff. They are a huge part of the growing Redfern community and provide a safe space for everyone. I work at a venue up the road and we are always in contact with them about what's happening around the area and how best to keep Redfern fun and safe. Let them have their hour back so people can finish their evening in peace and not have to worry about running up the street for a night cap.

The Bearded Tit is a unique and vibrant community orientated establishment fostering performers and musicians in a safe respectful environment. It’s the kind of place we really ought to be doing our utmost to support and encourage. Placing limitations by restricting operating hours are the simple difference between boon and bust.

I've worked in Redfern for nearly ten years and have seen the wonderful contribution the bearded tit has made to the area since it opened doors. It's a respectful, friendly, community focused business and an inclusive, fun and inspiring place. I hope the regulators will acknowledge the terrific contribution made & example set by this small (but big hearted) bar & approve the application & proposed trading hours.

  318. Ebony Jacobs commented

Teaching evening classes in the city means an after work catch up with friends is cut disturbingly short by such an early closing time. It's sadly restrictive and uncivilized to have to leave such a comfortable and cosy space by 11, and there's no other bar I'd rather be.
Apartment living does not afford entertaining at home. As an older patron whose love of pubs has considerably dimmed, unique places such as the Bearded Tit that are safe with assured respect and artistic grace need to be supported by the local council. Otherwise, where do we go? Melbourne?

  319. Bridget Grace commented

The bearded tit is a great community asset, don't clip the it's wings, give it extended hours so it can prosper and provide our local residents a great venue for food, drinks and entertainment.

I live in Redfern with my partner and as a visibly queer couple we have been harrassed on the streets. The Bearded Tit is one the few queer friendly places in Redfern. We feel safe when we go there. It is more than a place to drink but a gives us a sense of belonging. I would love to see this kind of place flourish and hopefully set an example for other bars. Business' with open arms should be rewarded.

  321. Desiree commented

The Bearded Tit is a place that should be allowed to flourish. Spreading local art and keeping a safe space for queer people, is invaluable to people like me. My partner and I live right around the corner and absolutely love The Bearded Tit. We venture off to other bars, but I never feel quite as safe and quite as at home than there.

  322. Averil Yeo commented

Please continue the current trading hours of The Bearded Tit, as proposed. This bar is a friendly, fun and safe place that allows locals and visitors a space to connect as a community. The Bearded Tit is a unique offering in Sydney, and is well loved by a diverse community who would not receive the same respect in other bars across the city. The owners consistently present live music, performance and art, which is desperately missing from most venues in Sydney following the lock out laws. The current trading hours allow them to continue their cultural programming which not only supports local artists, but also enhances Redfern's cultural landscape, economy and positive neighbourhood vibe.

  323. Victoria Johnstone commented

Please support community building, social cohesion and well-being, creative practice and local economies by approving the ongoing operation of the venue to 11pm outdoors and midnight indoors. The Bearded Tit supports creative practice and prosperity on many levels. Created and built by many local artists and makers - the Bearded Tit is a stand alone art installation in itself. Artists and workers are employed and profiled through diverse programming of live music and performances and annual programming of visual and multimedia opprtunities in the shopfront and clever sites throughout the venue. Plus, through venue operations. All artists are paid and the venue funds diverse employment opportunities in the hospitality industry. I am also impressed by the innovation that food served is sourced soley from local redfern small business suppliers. A small Award Winning Bar, the venue is popular to locals, patrons from across Sydney and abroad. It is important to the identity, growth and prosperity of Redfern. Keeping the Bearded Tit financially viable and able to deliver these many benefits to the immediate community and surrounds requires extension of hours to midnight at the least. The City of Sydney is pitched to be a world class City supporting innovation, creativity and late night economies. If any place meets these objects - It is The Bearded Tit. Please support the DA application. Thank you

The Bearded Tit is integral to the changing face of Redfern. It has created community and supported art and culture in our neighbourhood. These operating hour changes will have a drastic affect on the venue for the community it has created and supports. Please reconsider any planned changes.

The Bearded Tit is an amazingly safe space that encourages diversity and brings the local community together while also showcasing the talents of local artists. I fully support extending the trading hours for the Bearded Tit as this is what the community wants and needs. Sydney needs to support the little bars that make a difference in this town.

  327. Laura G commented

My friends and I were recently discussing our love for the Bearded Tit. It's a combination of the vibe, the staff and the artists they often host that brings us much joy. I travel 40 minutes from the suburbs just to enjoy a drink with friends at the Bearded Tit. Sydney is struggling and the Bearded Tit is needed to keep our heads high and ensure we can keep soldiering on with the good times. Please consider the hours as I wouldn't manage to venture out in time and enjoy the whole night if it closed early. Thanks, LG

  328. Claudia Nicholson commented

The Bearded Tit is a truely inclusive and wonderful establishment. Don't restrict its opening hours. Community driven spaces such as the tit should be fully supported so that they can remain open for everyone to enjoy.

  329. Will Lloyd commented

Please do not restrict the Bearded Tits opening hours. We have frequented the venue a number of times and have found an inclusive, sensibly run and outstanding place. The Bearded Tit is an important fixture of cultural value in Redfern and should be supported as such.

  330. Catherine McElhone commented

The Bearded Tit is a supportive, inclusive safe space - which also doubles as a bar. City of Sydney should definitely approve this application to extend the opening hours. The cumulative effect that this will have will create more opportunities for creatives, gender diverse folk and the larger Redfern community.

As a Darlinghurst Resident I often uber it to Redfern as the government has killed nightlife in my locality. Please extend The Bearded Tits Hours post haste.
    Many thanks,

  333. Jim Singline commented

As a Redfern resident who lives less than 200 metres from The Bearded Tit, I wholly support this application for more sensible trading hours. This venue is such an inclusive and important place of social gathering, we need to value the community role The Bearded Tit plays by supporting their ability to be a viable business. The management are so very respectful and responsible to everyone that enters the door, and to all neighbours both near and far, that there should be no issue extending the trading hours back to the original conditions.

  334. Brendan Seery commented

The night-time economy is just as vital as the daytime economy in world-class cities such as Sydney. Please don't allow vibrant nightlife to turn into a pumpkin because of midnight... Let's keep that for fairytales!

  335. Kat Dopper commented

The bearded Tit is special and there is nothing like it in the area. An art, music, performance space for people to come together and eat drink and be merry without affecting the neighbours or wider community. I full support the extended trading hours.

  336. Fiona McGregor commented

As a local resident and artist, I was overjoyed to see the opening of the Bearded Tit. It is unique among the burgeoning local bar scene in its support for artists and musicians, as well as its explicit agenda of fair treatment to all regardless of race, gender and sexuality. The staff are friendly, the prices fair; yet the amount of love, care and quirkiness that have gone into the bar are priceless. Please keep the extended opening hours. People need this safe space to socialise in safely, to earn a wage, and to make culture that all of us desperately need.

  337. Christine commented

The Bearded Tit is a welcoming inclusive space that encourages art and music within the community. Extended hours would see it available to a larger cross section of this community and enhance Sydneys lackluster nightlife.

  338. Terri-Anne Duarte commented

As a Redfern resident, I support the extended hours for the Bearded tit. It is a diverse, inclusive, welcoming venue that deserves to have it's hours extended.
