We tried to purchase this lovely, historical unit block last year in order to fully retain the wonderful building and refresh it with a beautiful interior reboot of carpets, curtains and paint as well as some bespoke carpentry. Being a block of four, our accountant had advised that we might live in one and rent out the other three (we are a doctor and a high school teacher with four children who will leave the family home - this was our downsizing and managing the three rental flats was our income strategy through our late career and retirement years). We established that an offer of $7M was in the ball park but were shocked to find that we were unable to tender any offer at all - the agent was evasive, unresponsive and in close communication with a developer. We understand a syndicate of young business men bought the unit block. That they plan to demolish and bluntly sully and demean the architectural history around this wonderful patch of inner Melbourne is not surprising. If we had been able to make our offer this situation would not have arisen and the unit block would be preserved. If the block came up for sale again we would buy it - so long as we didn't have an agent with interests in a developer's project blocking us from communicating and offer to the vendors.
