Illawarra Road can't take any more of these massive developments. Parking is impossible already let alone actually driving on the street.

Does Inner West Council have an actual plan for what they envisage for the area? Development for development sake is not only a disservice to current residents but ultimately ends in the destruction of the community and environs.

IWC needs to do some urban planning and identify areas where such developments will not be entertained in order to protect the privacy and quiet enjoyment of current residents. Residents who pay a premium to buy and rent in the area because of its current nature.

Should IWC fail to do this then rates should be reduced. No one wants to live in an urban ghetto.

I agree with Jacinta. Another 5 storey development will just clog up the parking even more.

The parking impact on all these buildings always say it's minimal yet it all builds up and becomes a larger problem.

IWC needs to seriously think about the how to better maintain the current infrastructure or increase the parking requirements of developments to keep cars off the street.

    Hi

I agree with the other comments on this application, as a owner and a resident nearby to what is proposed to be carried out I am concerned not just about parking, but also available light, impacts to visual amenity on neighbouring properties and overall impacts to character of the area. There is already a terriable eyeshore just been built next to the park off Harnett St. That has a surry hills architectural look to it and out of character to the surrounding area. Does Council provide any direction on these matters to developers or is it do what you like as long as you cover the basics.? Getting very tired of all this development are they no considerations for local community character???

    Regards
    Kate

Illawarra Road is becoming an eye-wateringly ugly wind tunnel. Please don't let it turn into just another Hurstville or Rockdale.

Stop destroying the characther of Marrickville by adding more soulless ugly cheaply build appartment blocks . It is turning the area into a cold heartless place . What is happening all around Marrickville and surrounds is totally abhorrent. I have lived in Marrickville for 25 years and it is really is sad to see. Who decides to allow this rubbish ?

I strongly oppose this Development Application. It is unbelievable that council is considering approving yet another oversized multistorey development on this section Illawarra Road.

Not enough parking has been allocated based on the Marrickville DCP requirements, my calculations indicate it is deficient by 0.3 parking spaces and 1 accessible parking space. Yet again, the cumulative impact of the multiple large complexes being built on Illawarra Road has not been addressed. Where is the Traffic Impact Assessment?

The proposed apartment block does not comply with the Marrickville DCP's required mix of dwelling types. This is yet another example of greedy developers trying to cram in as many units as possible to maximise their profit - to the detriment of the existing local community.
DCP requirements: Proposal number and percentage:
    1. Studio 5 – 20% Studios - 4 (36%)
    ii. 1 bedroom 10 – 40%; 1 bedroom - 4 (36%)
    iii. 2 bedroom 40 – 75%; and 2 bedroom - 2 (18%)
    iv. 3 bedroom or bigger 10 – 45%. 3 bedroom - 1 (9%)

The existing building façade on the corner of Harnett Ave and Illawarra Road was built in 1889 - Will council let what should be considered as a heritage façade be demolished to be replaced with yet another bland concrete eyesore?

The existing buildings on the site provide tenancy for two long term businesses which provide valuable services for the local community. The Athena Cake shop located on site has been established since 1974, it is a Marrickville institution which will be greatly missed.
Other recent new developments along Illawarra Rd have predominantly resulted in untenanted commercial spaces. How does the forced removal of existing businesses due to the new developments, which do not return post-construction, benefit the local community?

The proposal design (modern design and 5-storeys tall) is extremely out of character with the surrounding single and two storey residential and commercial properties and, as such, will affect the visual amenity of the area.
Furthermore the existing surrounding low-rise properties will be overshadowed by the proposed development, to the detriment of surrounding residents.

Council, please consider the above points in relation to the DA. I appreciate the requirement for higher density accommodation in the vicinity of the rail corridor. However, council must consider the negative impact on the existing residents and local community associated with the multiple large-scale residential development currently being approved and constructed on this section of Illawarra Road.

    I totally oppose this development.
Inner West Council need to seriously take a LOOK around our historic area and see the effect these horrible unit developments are having on the streetscape let alone the social aspect that results.
Why are developers being allowed to destroy Marrickville and Dulwich Hill ?

I oppose all development in the area since 1930. All those 1960's unit blocks and housing commission have already ruined the area enough. If people can't afford to buy a house in the area, bad luck. No units thanks. Inner West Council should place a Toll on Cooks River crossings cause all these people from neighboiring suburbs are driving through my area causing traffic chaos. Also centrlink and all TAB outlets should be closed, i feel like i'm living in Mt Druitt or something and can we do something about beggers and window washers, this is not a 3rd world country

I support this development. The development of a world class wind tunnel on Illawarra road will provide excellent opportunities for large scale renewable energy wind farms to be installed - in accordance with council's renewable energy policy.

I welcome this development on Illawarra Road.

The proposal is sympathetic to the surrounding buildings, and the preservation of the existing facades and shopfront is welcome and will help to retain the better character of Illawarra Road. Relative to many existing developments on Illawarra Road (e.g. Woolworths parking lot, the old Centrelink building, many of the 1980s early 1990's triangle topped developments) this proposal will increase the overall amenity and aesthetic of the Road.

The proposal will contribute positively to housing diversity and affordable supply in Marrickville, and is appropriately located in what should be a higher density corridor adjacent to services and transport.

This is exactly the kind of development we need to see more of in Marrickville and Dulwich Hill.

Illawarra Road has enough medium and high rise developments. To approve further developments of this nature will further foresee the demise of a once beautiful suburb. It is now becoming another Rockdale with no aesthetic beauty or soul. In addition, the traffic congestion has already become absolutely unbearable. I fully support Kristens comments.

Like many of the others I have concerns about parking (and hope there is sufficient parking mandated in the development) however I am in support of this plan and other development along the rail corridor.

Also like many others I am concerned about the look of these units (although this image looks decent to me) however Marrickville South is already full of ugly, poorly constructed buildings (hot in summer, freezing in winter) and it would be a shame to see the new developments build on that piece of poor planning. More development on Illawarra Road hopefully means we will have less need to meet the increasing population with the demolition of some of the houses in the area which unlike the bulk of shopping district contain character and charm.

I would love to have some clarity on the "community concerns" some individuals have stated. I would like to think the sense of community is built on the mixed demographic and racial groups that live in this area. As far as I know no public housing has been demolished for this (or so far others) proposal and therefore I would think increased units in the area would increase the chances of Marrickville remaining a mixed income and mixed demographic area. I would think the ongoing housing affordability crisis would do more damage to the Marrickville community and social cohesion than an increased number of units.

Although I am in support of this development the rumour mill does claim that the entire side of the block is likely to be developed, if this is the case I would love it to be done as one project and not piece meal. Surely one development would increase the standard of the development, allow for a more uniform appearance to the units, and be more cost effective.

While I don't at all dismiss concerns for the community or social cohesion I also look forward to the changes more people will bring. I have loved the changes in Marrickville that have come in the five plus years I have lived here. I love that in addition to the great dinner options that were here when I arrived I now have a multitude of brunch options, a wine bar, live music, and perhaps most importantly gelato options. I look forward to more people bringing more variety and activities to the area and perhaps I am being optimistic but more people paying rates hopefully means better council facilities too.

As Kirsten has mentioned above.... "The proposed apartment block does not comply with the Marrickville DCP's " -- how can this be allowed to happen?

If I were to apply for a D.A to put a pool in my backyard, I'd have to adhere to Council's rules. Simple as that. Why should a medium to large mixed development be allowed to do otherwise?

With the approved D.A a few shops north (on Illawarra) already approved (with parking concerns made clear but, yet again, ignored), I'm quite sure this D.A will also be given the go-ahead too.

Does council even read these comments? Do they bother taking them into account?

I too am all for diversity, new residents, new cultures, new faces in our community. BRING IT ON! It's why we live here. The diversity and the energy. It's great. However... please ensure the building is equipped for these new residents, in very possible way, from parking to greenery to natural light, privacy & overall quality.

To finish.... PLEASE do not presume that new residents will not own a car simply because they will be living near public transport. This is la la land thinking. Please ensure suitable parking is a priority. For all concerned.

Anyway... like I say.... my comments here will likely be akin to peeing in the wind....

    Pity.

All the best. My fingers are crossed.
