oh no, surely not the end of the Quiet Man. What a shame. Where will the local community, particularly the Irish and others with UK heritage get together now?

and the proposed replacement, a multi level building with basement carparking! really?? inappropriate?

oh well, there goes the neighbourhood... (and more traffic!!)

Isn't there an oversupply of apartments in Melbourne already? why do 'apartments' seem to be the 'answer' to everything? what about some more 'amenity' for the existing residents?

Multilevel apartment building means more traffic when we cannot cope with the amount of traffic using Racecourse Rd already. Kensington is a great suburb but it's village feel will be eroded if more apartments are built.

I have lived in Kensington for just under 6 months now. After this short time, I feel more at home here than I have anywhere else. After hearing about this proposal, I was very saddened and angered by the proposed building. After mulling on my thoughts
I realised that why I felt this way was because the meeting places in Flemington/Kensington/Newmarket have created a very engaged and active community.
The Quiet Man is one of those places. Not just for people of Irish heritage but for locals of all ages and backgrounds. On Tuesday nights there are Irish dancing classes - I've never seen so many people (especially seniors) so happy and engaged. There are Irish music nights and impromptu jam sessions that bring people around in a circle to sing and dance with no spark of judgement on ability.
The Quiet Man is not just a themed pub or a restaurant but a cultural and social hub of this community.
This is what I WANT in my community not more apartments.

Apartments can be built anywhere, why take one of the few remaining pubs in the area??! If apartments are a must then surely the pub can be incorporated into the design so that locals can continue to enjoy it. As a long time Kensington resident this is so disappointing. Please exercise your authority to ensure the unique features of the building and the existing public space are incorporated into the apartment building design if it must go ahead.

I have lived in Kensington for 25 years and while many people I meet don't know where this is, if I mention The Quiet Man most know exactly where I'm talking about.

This is a well known pub with great character. It brings people from all over town, especially on St. Pat's when there is a line of people waiting to get in.

To replace such a great social hub with apartments is a huge shame in itself, but there is already so little parking space in the area this will only worsen the situation. Sure, the apartments have a planned underground parking area, but many of these apartments could be sharing one car park to two, or possibly three cars.

It will be a huge loss to the community if this goes ahead.

I love living in the Kensington/Flemington area but getting rid of the Quiet Man will be absolutely terrible for the local community. I understand that the Melbourne population is expanding rapidly and apartments will continue to be built but why take away an important part of local culture? Places like this create a community. If you care about our area and our community you should stand against this development. These developers are destroying what makes Melbourne great.

Just terrible to see yet another local landmark being demolished for another ugly modern monstrosity where they will no doubt try to squash as many people as possible into apartments like shoeboxes. And of course we'll have the resulting increase in traffic along Racecourse Road to look forward to. Council, just say no no no!

  8. Adam Carroll commented

The removal of this amazing Kensington landmark will only benefit property developers, and will leave the community poorer.

I hope the planning authority will consider the wider impact of this decision on the community and reach a conclusion with the interests of all parties in mind.

This is an institution for the area. It's a travesty of good planning policy to let this be replaced by more apartments (which will undoubtedly be small, inappropriate, and a gross over-utilisation of space). At the very minimum, any design should allow the hotel to remain in place, and for developments to work around it.

The Quiet Man is an excellent hotel and a meeting place for locals, neighbours for social get togethers and community celebrations. We are fast loosing our heritage to the onslaught of apartment development. I am not against development by any means but to sacrifice significant historical references in our urban environment is a loss that can never be replicated or replaced. There are few eating facilities in the area that offer outdoor dining in safe environment with traditional fare. Please keep our hotel!

No way . I have been going here for many years on a regular basis and have never had a problem with the food, service or staff. It's all top class. Everything has been sensational. The atmosphere is great and it's an awesome place to chill out. The only decent pub around in Flemington and they want to take it away. They can't do this to this amazing pub. It's such a traditional Irish Pub with so much to offer. I don't know where you will find another like it. .All staff are Irish and are extremely friendly and greet you with a very warm welcome. It was made in Ireland and brought out here to be assembled. And as it says above "one of the longest continuous local social institutions" and they want to change it into apartments. If it brings the people from all over to the pub well that's saying something right? There's enough apartments around this area anyway and we certainly don't need anymore. Go build your apartments somewhere else. Not happy about this. I only hope it doesn't happen. What a shame it's not heritage listed as then no one can touch it. This also means more traffic for the area which struggles now and trying to get out onto Racecourse Road now is a nightmare? What's it going to be like if this goes ahead.?And i can say that you won't have people coming to Flemington much to relax if this amazing pub goes as it's such a great place to chill.

I am feeling a strong sense of de ja vu here. First Hardimans hotel and now the Quiet Man which has to be one of the most well known establishments in Kensington especially on St Pats day.

I understand the need for apartments but why build them on a main road reducing liveability for the residents forced to buy apartments on one of the busiest streets. Not to mention reducing liveability of the area for local residents who flock to the racecourse road district for food and drinks with their friends.

There is still time to stop this inappropriate placement of an apartment block which only seeks to benefit the developer!

I moved from Sydney to Flemington this year. I picked Melbourne as home because of its cultural and community feel, a lot of that has been stripped out of Sydney by poorly planned development and until I got to Melbourne I didn't know how much I'd been missing it. Please don't do in Melbourne what they've done in Sydney, it's gutted the soul out of what was once a good city.

The Quiet Man is an important social cultural venue. A pub has been there in some form for a very long time and is frequented by many groups. Our local church holds its Christmas Carols at the pub each year which hosts 20 community groups. This proposal will be another nail in the coffin of Racecourse Road as an activity precinct.

  15. Erin Church commented

I initially thought The Quiet Man was just another pub. I was wrong! This pub is a hidden gem. Great, affordable food, fantastic atmosphere, dance classes, entertainment, and just good old craic. For it to be torn down would be an absolute shame.

Why must we turn the lovely village feel of Kensington into a concrete jungle with poorly built apartments, while adding to the build up of traffic. Traffic in this area is bad enough. Don't make it worse.

  16. Jane Smith commented

A decision to remove the quiet man pub and replace it with apartments is just plain dumb.. All comments in this thread clearly articulate that llocals want the pub to stay and I would expect the number of objections to grow as the developer tries to progress through the planning process. Any councillor who plays a part in approving the development of the apartments should be fired from their job. They clearly don't understand the needs of the community.
