    How many Bunnings stores does this area need? Mascot and Alexandria aren't far away.

    Also traffic around Tempe and Sydenham has increased immensely since IKEA arrived. The flow of traffic is at a crawl with my street Park Road, heavily congested by people avoiding the lights at railway road.

    This is sheer madness.

    The Marrickville Heritage Society is concerned about the adverse impacts the proposed rear extension of the building will have on the appearance of the facade of the heritage listed building, and requests that the proposal in its current form be rejected.
    The photomontage of the proposed main elevation shows the new building looming over the main facade, detracting from the existing heritage building by its height and dark coloured cladding. The over-sized brand sign is also intrusive. Similar design faults were identified by the Society in the original design of the adjoining IKEA development, and subsequently withdrawn from the final scheme.
    The Society is also concerned about the adverse impacts that increased frequency of car and truck movements will have on the adjoining residential areas. These areas are low scale residential precincts with narrow streets, that are already listed as Conservation Areas, or have been recommended for such listing. The proposed modification to the intersection of Smith Streets and the Princes Highway seems to be insufficient to prevent 'rat runs' through the adjoining streets. The traffic impacts of the development must be more fully evaluated.

    Where are the plans and elevations for this proposed building?

    Where is the traffic management plan to ensure Bunnings' customers don't enter into narrow South Street?

    I am extremely concerned about the implications on traffic in the local area - the Princes Hwy is already at its peak. When IKEA was in the planning stages there were traffic surveys and studies done - why is none of this being done?
    How will the flow on traffic effect Union Street? Will all the traffic from Smith Street be using Union Street as a rat run to other suburbs? Interesting how Marrickville Council has been so quiet? Perhaps Westfarmers have made a significant contribution to the Council?

    This development in its current guise regarding traffic is a absolute joke.
    Whoever thought that directing all traffic including large semi trailers into a narrow residential street then directing all the vehicle traffic back out the same way directly into a narrow residential streets ie Smith and then Union st would be sensible option is beyond me.
    I live in union st and we currently get large trucks entering our street even though it's a 3 tonne limit as it's easier than driving down to the highway to link up to various other routes.
    The traffic flow charts provided in the application are comical as are the hours of operations that have been applied for .
    There are currently three Bunnings stores in close radius . Ie Rockdale Alexandria and mascot with another huge one being built in east gardens .
    Why is one needed and built that has to be serviced by flooding residential streets with traffic all day and weekends with traffic numbers that the very narrow residential streets just can't cope with.
    I disagree with the development as it totally disregards any residents living within the vicinity .

    I am with most of the other posters i.e. we are turning our suburbs into market places for the likes of Bunnings, Woolies and Coles etc., not to mention developers. I would actually prefer a good residential development on this site than another blue barn full of cheaply manufactured goods. There are three Bunnings within 10k of this site.

    I strongly object to this DA proposal for a number of significant reasons:

    • Traffic will increase dramatically and negatively impact the residents of Smith street and surrounding streets in terms of noise, pollution and increased commute times
    • Bunnings will do nothing to diversify and enhance our Tempe community. I would prefer a development that would have everyday use for residents such as mixed business retail including cafes and groceries to develop local business and create a community centre for the suburb. There are already Bunnings stores within ten minute drives from the site in Rockdale and Alexandria. There is no need to build another one at this location.
    • The widening of Smith street may impact on house prices in Smith street creating financial tensions for new homeowners
    • The opening hours proposed are unacceptable and will only serve to increase noise and traffic for residents

    I have already outlined these matters in detail to Marrickville Council and have only received an auto generated response to acknowledge receipt of letter. This is not good enough.

    Along with other residents we have also contacted the RMS pinch point program identifying this proposal as a significant problem in terms of traffic congestion and again have not gained a response.

    I have also contacted Andrew O’Neill the Regional Property Developer for Bunnings and received no response. This shows a complete lack of regard from Bunnings towards the local community in which it wants to set up business.

    Furthermore, on the 12th and 13th October Sure Search systems were working on the site from 9pm until 5am. The noise of drilling etc. was simply unacceptable for residents and there was no notification. We have now received a last minute notification of plans to conduct such operations at the site again tonight from 9pm-5am by the same company (29th October). I believe that this poor consideration for residents is a sign of how Bunnings is going to operate in all future operations on the site.

    Overall there has been very poor communication to residents regarding this proposal.

    I object to this proposal on the grounds that the development of Bunnings and the widening of Smith street for the purpose of servicing Bunnings will have significant negative impact on local residents of Smith street and all surrounding residential streets.

    Currently Smith street suffers from parking stress and traffic congestion on weekdays and during office hours only. The development of the Bunnings store will ensure that these conditions are not only worsened but extended into evenings and weekends. Smith street is currently very quiet on the weekends and this will not continue should the development go ahead. Residents will lose a significant street parking should the Northern side of Smith Street be widened for traffic.

    Further to this, the increased traffic congestion will see increased traffic incidents in the area. There have already been significant accidents along this strip of the Princes Highway including pedestrians being hit by cars in the past twelve months. With more traffic including semi-trailers being forced into and out of Smith street and into Union street local residents will see their commute times dramatically increased and it is likely that drivers will try to take different routes to avoid Smith street, only furthering to congest surrounding narrow residential streets such as South street. Traffic will be forced down as far as Holbeach avenue to service all residential streets from there to Smith street.

    On top of congestion the increased traffic will mean increased noise for residents and as the opening hours proposed are from 6am -10pm it will mean deliveries in noisy semi-trailers could start from as early as 4am. The lights from entering and exiting traffic after dark will also shine into residents homes and disturb residents quality of living.

    All traffic for the Bunnings should flow into and out of the site from the Highway. None of this traffic should be directed into a residential street such as Smith street.

    I agree that all traffic to and from the proposed Bunnnings store should be via the Princes Highway. If they can't manage that the proposal should be rejected.

    The streets around the site were set out in the 1910s and 20s. They were not designed for the volume of the cars that there are today. And, they are wholly residential streets. Also, the streets are too narrow for the volume of traffic that the store will attract especially Union St and all the streets east of the highway (South, Station, Harp, Wentworth, Fanning and Barden streets).

    I am especially concerned that South Street will become a "rat-run" to and from the store and the residential amenity that all residents are entitled to will be lost forever.

    Since Ikea has made it way into Tempe, traffic has increased dramatically in Lymerston St, Tempe, constant traffic all hours of the day and night is unbearable.
    Marrickville and Inner West council have done nothing to assist the residents to reduce the noise, traffic and pollution in this area.
    Bunnings stores are located in neighbouring Mascot, Alexandria and Rockdale, no need for another warehouse bringing more congestion to Tempe.

    I agree with Mary, no need for another Bunnings. We need more green spaces, schools, and areas for residents feel calm and at ease. The latest residents living in apartments have no need for another store. There's are sufficient Bunnings without another in the local area. Increased traffic and congestion is at an all time high and is making the inner west uninhabitable.

    With the growth in population in the local area, and the anticipated associated reduction in traffic on the Princes Highway due to the new M5, it’s a fantastic move to see valuable Business to local residents replacing in accessible space currently used by Factories. I’d like to see Bunnings and the council use the recent development at Alexandria as a guide for how this will be implemented, perhaps by adding more accessible space and a usable connection to Tempe reserve through Smith Street.
    But in general it will be an improvement on the current situation - especially as fewer people will have to drive to Alexandria, Rockdale or Kingsgrove to access a reasonably priced store such as this, reducing traffic in those areas.

    There is already too much pressure on Smith Street – the area cannot sustain increased vehicle movements. I have read a comment here that the new M5 will alleviate traffic on Princes Hwy – what a nonsense. There was also the suggestion that we need the area to be developed like Alexandria has been – nope, it's a horrible congested nightmare. The same person suggested that the factories need to replaced with a Bunnings – why? Those factories employ people and plenty of them make locally-produced goods, I far prefer this to container loads of imported tat flowing into Bunnings on massive trucks through our narrow streets. This postcode has suffered enough, how much more are we expected to be subjected to?

    I think its a wonderful idea bring Bunnings to the inner south. Princess Highway needs development in this area-its tired and run down. The new M5 will take heaps of pressure and cars out-so really whats the issue with traffic.
    I go to bunnings all the time and have to get a bus to Alexandria-this will help people who do not want to drive or use public transport.
