The heritage value of the Art Deco shop front deserves to be protected and doing so will not significantly diminish access to the premises. It is the sensitivr repurposing of existing historically distinctive architecture that gives the precinct its character. Without these links to the past (and the creative renovations they inspire) then Enmore road will end up looking like any other relatively anonymous string of shops. Please protect those beautiful curved windows!

  2. Marghanita da Cruz commented

A variety of beautiful shop fronts with awnings improve pedestrian amenity by providing shelter and interest.

Opportunities to sit in interesting windows and contemplate the passing parade over a coffee or meal are few and far between.

  3. Amy commented

I agree that the facade of these beautiful buildings should be protected.

  4. Justin Koke commented

I agree with the sentiments of D. Ellison. These shopfronts are an important aspect of the area and are slowly being eroded away, they are what makes our area unique and destroying these will detract from our area ... our heritage is important.

The removal of the curved windows and further to this the shop entrance mosaic floor tiles is historical vandalism. These are aspects of our area the local council should hold in high regard when looking at planning applications, please protect these facades.

    I agree with D.Ellison, Amy, & Justin Koke -

The heritage value of these shop fronts makes Enmore, Enmore.

The curved windows and entry tile mosaics must be protected at all costs to avoid "Sydney Syndrome" (shapeless, nameless, square, aluminium framed) shop fronts from creeping up our beautiful Enmore Road.

  6. Luke A Spickler commented

The facade must be preserved, if they don't like it, go elsewhere.

  7. Suzan Fayle commented

As a former resident of Enmore for many years, I still often shop there. One of the reasons is the charm & character of historic buildings & shopfronts. Don't allow people with no sense of history or aesthetics bugger up this unique shopfront. Please!

  8. Alice Crawford commented

This lovely art deco facade has character and history and should be protected. Newtown is not actually a mall and most of us would prefer it not look like one.

  9. Francis Bailey commented

Heritage should be preserved whenever possible - particularly these Art Deco shopfronts that are iconic of the era. Once they are gone, they're gone forever. There's nothing wrong with this one, and the area does not need an anonymous-looking 'modern' shopfront to make it look like areas with less history. Newtown is different for a reason, and the history is part of that. Please refuse the application.

  10. C King commented

I am not opposed to development and upgrading per se but do not agree that it should be allowed to the extent of demolishing or altering the existing shopfront. As a resident of Newtown and someone concerned to protect its character I strongly oppose the planned development. There is no reason a cafe or similar outlet could not retain the existing and beautiful shipfront.

This is a beautiful shopfront and should be preserved. It adds to the the character of the area. Too much of this character has been lost already. I have been a resident of Enmore for 12 years and this character is one of the aspects that drew me to the area in the first place.

  12. Penny Evans commented

I had the shop for 8 years before the framers. We were Chowk Ceramics. When we had 111 Enmore rd, the facade was in the original Deco condition. The perspex was pale pink and there was black deco lettering above the door saying 'gallery' and also 111. I was shocked when Koru framers painted the perspex that horrible orangey red colour and removed the black perspex lettering. But to remove the actual facade is an absolute tragedy. There is so little of this type of architecture and design as it is. Leave it alone and if anything, get that horrible paint off the sublime pale pink perspex underneath!

Please don't allow any further destruction of the heritage and character of our area. It's too valuable and precious - in so many ways, and once gone can never be recovered. This is a very special community, and one that values our history. As our elected representatives, please support us and this unique area. And it's not just for residents, our uniqueness draws people here and is good for local small business owners. There are malls aplenty, and few character filled shopping streets. Preservation is important for the past, the present and our future. Thanks you for considering our views.

  14. Katie Smith commented

The beautiful art deco facade of this building should be preserved, to keep the heritage look of the area. We need to preserve old shopfronts so that not everything looks the same!

  15. Electra Frost commented

The proposed alterations only serve the individual design interests of one single business. Good luck to them, I hope they do well, but they won't be there forever. The existing structure is of greater collective value to other future and current retailers, visitors and locals. This art deco shopfront should be retained for its aesthetic and historical value to Enmore. People visit because it's an interesting road to walk along with historical and different looking shop fronts that actually catch the eye and draw you in. Please keep it that way.

  16. Duncan Stephens commented

    Hi -

The majority of the renovations (internal) makes sense but please leave the facade alone - or better return it to original condition - it will add to the attractiveness of the new business.

Disappointing that the SEE tries to play down the nature of the change.

  17. Linda Carmichael commented

The character of Enmore Road is rapidly being eroded with unsympathetic developments. There are too few early 20th century shop fronts left in this area to stand by and watch the destruction of this one. Please do not let this development application go ahead.

  18. Matt Green commented

Please leave these original featured windows and shop front.
    We must protect the history

  19. Kerrie Pierce commented

The proposed alterations should not be approved and the Art Deco existing shopfront should be preserved. Much of our heritage of this type has been destroyed already. The quaint Art Deco curved windows and terrazzo is far more appealing and attractive to customers in this area than characterless bifold doors, so I question the wisdom and situational sensitivity of the interior designer anyway.

  20. Peter C commented

Preserve the shopfronts. Building new shopfronts and buildings is easy, you can't build heritage.

  21. Frederik Alan-Smith commented

Once the art-deco features are removed we can't get them back.

    Must be oreserved.

  22. Gillian Browne commented

I strongly object to this proposal. Redevelopment into a cafe/restaurant is ok but there is no need to change the heritage features of this building. In fact it should be restored to its original 1920s splendour. I have always admired these windows. Surely, the owners can see this is what makes their building beautiful and special, and should not be made to look like every other shop font out there. Sydney loves unique design. Incorporating these windows into a stylish new fitout will make this place standout, and perhaps get more visitors through its art deco doors.

  23. Louise baker commented

These beautiful heritage shop fronts need to be preserved they add much character to the neighbourhood and such strong Art Deco design is beautiful. A quick turn over to the current trend which is a mistake that can't be undone once our heritage is lost.

  24. Emma Champion commented

I agree with the majority of the other commenters here - please preserve the Art Deco window structure! We don't need more tasteless bi-fold windows. The historical character of the buildings here is a huge part of why Newtown/Enmore is so unique! I'm officially in opposition to this alteration.

  25. Emma Coorey commented

I object to this proposal. Changes have already been made to the detriment of this beautiful facade (a jarring paint colour and the removal of Art Deco lettering and numbers). The rest should be preserved. If the heritage features are removed it will lose its charm, we will lose a little bit of local history and I daresay the cafe will lose a few local customers before it has even opened. We should be trying to protect these kinds of buildings rather than turning them into bland boxes.

  26. Leah Lnch commented

No way, get a different shop if this doesn't fit the need.
We need to preserve these gorgeous shop fronts of tester year.

  27. Katy R commented

I agree that this frontage should be preserved. It is a beautiful addition to this vibrant community and it's loss would far out-way the benefit of another generic fronted cafe.

  28. paul Hughes knight commented

I object to the proposed destruction of the original front of the shop, it should be preserved to keep a link with the character of the neighbourhood. I would have thought the generous approach to on street seating taken by the council and the appeal of a heritage exterior would more than compensate for the loss of the proposed bifold doors. See cafe Shenkin for comparison, or Bar Racuda. These are two of the most successful businesses on the strip, and both could be said to be enhanced by their original shop fronts, while the customers are well served by footpath seating.

  29. Megan Hicks commented

Please refuse the part of the application that wishes to replace the existing shop front. Enough has been done to destroy the character of the vibrant shopping strips of King Street and Enmore Road and here is an opportunity to prevent more destruction. These areas are jewels of Sydney because of their eclecticism. Progress does not have to mean progressive sameness or blandness.
