I strongly support this proposal for more housing. This is exactly the sort of place to permit more units if developers think they can make it work. This is because it is right near the town centre and the station, optimal for preventing growth in cars and car trips. More demand is required to boost train services at Unanderra station, usually hourly or worse. I have spent over a hundred hours stuck at this station often freezing over night, during school and uni between 2004 and 2016 - we cant waste our stations in scarcely populated suburbs while locals complain about traffic. I quit hockey in Unanderra because it was too difficult waiting around for trains on a weeknight.
House prices here are up 25% in 5 years to $950k median and despite being a historically low demand area it has become unnaffordable due to migration from northern suburbs who build even less housing. The median 2 bed units are now up to $700k, compared to $550k in Melbourne explained by large unit building programmes last decade, despite higher wages there. This is completely unnacceptable and a failure of our council's strategic planning who have supressed the supply response required to keep prices down. We have seen 6 storey buildings refused on Tannery st just 2 years ago, this means a dozen retirees did not downsize and free up family homes in the region to bring prices down for young families. This NIMBYism massively contributes to our housing unnaffordability. At 4 storeys is it still too tall to keep our Council staff email inbox free of NIMBY emails? Regardless, those who have got theirs should be acknowledged and ignored. This project should be approved without delay or shrinking the project, especially given Wollongong City Council have failed to meet state mandated housing targets for two years straight now. Demand must be met, and the state HDA will approve towers much taller than this and in worse locations to achieve it for our council.
