Period homes shouldn't be demolished in Australia because they offer significant historical, cultural, economic, and environmental benefits, including unique character and charm, strong connections to the past, potential for high resale value, and the opportunity to salvage durable, high-quality materials like hardwoods.
Losing these buildings means losing a piece of the past and wasting valuable resources.
This is a historical area for period architecture so how will the demolition works and the new construction change the look and feel of the property and the
neighbourhood?
BCC shouldn't underestimate how
much of a positive impact and draw card these period architectural
buildings have on the overall beauty and feel of not just the street or neighbourhood but on Ballarat as a whole.
Once these period buildings are gone, they and their history are gone forever since you cannot replicate history.
Finally, demolishing period structures is not environmentally
sustainable considering at least 95% if not 100% of the materials from the structures ends up in landfill.
Councils across Australia
must be more long term
thinkers.
In particular, regarding
sustainable building and how left over building materials from new builds as well as the materials produced by demolishing buildings are disposal of, or better yet, how these materials could be repurposed or reused.
Less waste is created when a period building is renovated or extended rather than when its demolished. Period buildings can be improved by adding additional insulation etc without it being demolished or it's character changed.
I hope the BCC doesn't allow this period home to be demolished as it will negatively impact the neighbourhood and Ballarat.
