This tree is in the Historic 1901 Cable Station Precinct of Southport and less than 100 metres from the original site of the Cable Station. Character trees are regarded as iconic and to be preserved in this precinct.
A mature native tree was removed from this site in approximately the same position after the sale of the property a few years ago and before the house renovation. I don't even know if the owner had a valid permit for its removal. A tree lopping company suddenly arrived unannounced to the neighbourhood early one morning. I can't remember if that tree was a tuckeroo, but it was a beautiful, healthy mature native tree that had been growing there for decades. I probably have a photo of it and the tree removal company in my files. Now we find the present owner wants to remove another native tree. Why? It is not unhealthy, it is not dangerous. Is it the same owner gradually removing all the trees?
I object to unnecessary tree removal. If someone decides to come and live in this neighbourhood, that person should respect the wishes of the community and keep its character intact.
Does the applicant hold the opinion that the tree is ugly/spoils their view and is therefore worthy of destruction? The neighbourhood does not think the tree is ugly and if it spoils the view, the applicant should have bought elsewhere. We, the locals, do not want our beautiful green neighbourhood reduced to a concrete desert devoid of natural charm.
This delightful tree friendly neighbourhood has been the envy of Southport for generations.
Like many others, I object to anyone coming in and wantonly destroying it.
