This proposed development will significantly detract from the character of the area and will destroy privacy for neighbouring residents. Due to the artificial elevation of the site (a result of significant earthworks and filling activities), the planned development overlooks several residential backyards (including my own) where young children live and play at the properties. This is of great concern to me as a father of two young girls who play in what will be my extremely exposed backyard. Beyond the privacy implications, being a proposed 24-hour restaurant overlooking neighbouring residences and backyards presents a significant security and safety risk to those residents and their belongings as a result of the ability for customers to readily peer over the fences of these properties from an elevated position. Further the odour and noise that would be generated by the proposed McDonalds restaurant would also present a significant nuisance to neighbouring residents, and would likely result in continuous complaints to council.

I strongly plead that council does not approve the development at the proposed location, and instead suggests that the developer finds an alternative location where the privacy and security of neighbouring residents is not compromised or put at risk. A potential location could be to the rear of the Woolworths being developed on the broader property where more commercial development, including a hotel, are planned for construction.

I think this is a really good idea. taking some of the traffic away from the poorly set out Maccas in the middle of town would be good.

I agree that a restaurant with safe and ample parking would be appreciated by many families and residents in the area

I would strongly oppose this development. The new McDonalds is absolutely not required.
We should be looking at healthy alternatives.
I have no objection to development however we simply are not sending a positive message to the community.

The intergration of these types of developments so close to residential areas without suitable buffer zones negatively impacts on those residents. These impacts should have primacy of consideration rather than wants of developers and convenience of potential consumers.

I’m amongst the houses near by and I love having my windows open to let the fresh air in. But with a fast food joint going in so close by this won’t be something that’ll be enjoyable any more. The stench that comes from those places is appalling and I don’t want my house to smell like that.
The noise also travels very well and the retaining wall is a huge eye sore.
They’ve made a huge mess of water run off section to the park and the pond water and our house water have suffered from the development greatly. I had a plumber find dirt and grit blocking my house taps!
It’s taken away from the family friendly feel of the estate dramatically. And will only cause more trouble with rubbish pollution and noise complaints constantly to council.

Surely this money can go towards the hospital instead of another fast food restaurant. Some of us moved to Mount Barker for the peace and quiet and the fresh air. The wafting smell of burgers and increased traffic isn't welcomed.

I strongly oppose this proposal. Having a 24hour 7 days a week McDonald's will significantly reduce the character of the area and impact surrounding properties. Reduction of property value due to the constant smell of processed food, the noise, rubbish and the high potential for it to become a social gathering spot for teenagers and young adults at 1am in the morning. We have a large dog who sleeps outside at night and is very well behaved, however we are concerned that he will bark all night if he hears people near the property, therefore causing noise complaints to the council. Having our back yard so exposed due to the horrendous elevation of the proposed site means my children do not have privacy while they play in their yard on any day of the week. We do not need another McDonald's and urge the council to reject this proposal.

(I apologise for the length but needs to be said)
Michael Criwin we totally agree with you. When we discussed the purchase of our block(before any roads were laid in Amblemead) we were told 2 important things,
(1) a SHOPPING CENTRE would be built, where it is now being constructed
(2) NO THROUGH ROADS were to be constructed, that is, Amblemead Drive would be the only through fare access, no thoroughfare to or from other developments. That was fine for us, a quieter residential area. So we purchased it.
There was no mention of:-
-another petrol shopping centre type conglomerate such as OTR (there is a petrol station 200M, or so away) with another OTR to be built in Aston Hills(no objection, it is an area in need,
-no Child minding centre(there is one going up in Bluestone 200M or so away with another already in place in Aston Hills), no objection to any of them,
-no multi level hotel/tavern?!
-no 24h fast food outlets, one of each conglomerate’s is enough in Mount Barker. MacDonald and Hungry Jack’s outlets do not have good reputation in any areas, where they are a 24h outlet, in the areas of noise, littering, nuisance, loitering etc,
We understand that for a town or area to grow and benefit there need to be commercial outlets of various type products, we have no objection.
But, better thought needs to be given to where outlets are allowed, based on nuisance level, noise level, traffic flow, volume of patronage, similar type of outlets and possibly other reasons which may be thought of.
Perhaps the best places for outlets that are of concern would be best allowed in semi commercial areas such as or similar to “home maker centres” where there is little or less residential representation.
It should not be up to the individual outlets to dictate.
What we also need to know is, which body makes decisions in our council area, is it our council elected members or which?
People and organisations outside of our council should not dictate to our council what, how, when or why things should take place in our yard.
The state government(starting with the previous state labour governments) approved the large developments in this area, they do not consult with our council on what developments are to be approved and what and how it is to be constructed and what and which outlets are approved and where located(I have been told this on several occasions by council members and personnel).
So, the big question is, why do we have a council body when they have no authority in what they are to control after the state government relinquishes its authority to the council and tells it “it’s all yours now, it’s up to you to fix (our) stuff ups and don’t come to us for money”. Don’t worry it will happen, and our rates will increase.
So where do we object, can we object, if we do, will it be considered in line with what we are presenting.
I believe the state government should transfer authority to the council and allow it to control the developers and to approve all developments in line with our councils and people’s needs so we have a better coordinated region.

We object to the OTR and Macdonald outlets applications for Wellington Road & Heysen Boulevard site.

I strongly disagree with the application for a 24 hour McDonald’s to be built.
When obesity rates amongst Australians is on the rise, particularly youth obesity. Why is it the best Mount Barker can do is another fast food restaurant. We should strongly consider the health of our residents, fast food chains kill off completion from small healthier restaurants. I agree we need more commercial food offerings, but we could do so much better than another McDonald’s. I bet the idea of a big conglomerate developing the site sounds appealing, but at what cost?

Living in close proximity to the proposed 24/7 McDonalds highly concerns me. Firstly, this is a highly dense residential area, although a new supermarket and other facilities have been approved, they are not 24/7 nor attract the same clientele as the other businesses. The smell, noise, lighting, excess traffic movement created from drive thru access will again cause significant traffic issues on already overwhelmed roads in this area and impact livability in this region. This is a quiet residential pocket of Mount Barker and such a proposal will detract from the attractiveness of such a region. There are many more suitable areas that do not overlook residential properties, create traffic issues or impact the quality of living for residents. I’ve lived nearby for 10 years and although I support most of the growth which is needed for Mt Barker to support the growing population, this seems to be a large oversight for this section and should strongly be re considered.
