Parking, traffic and (lack of) pedestrian safety is already out of control in this area at school pick-up and drop off times. There are cars mounting curbs, parking on nature strips, blocking traffic etc. This will only compound the problem, and increase the danger.

  2. Karen commented

This is a great place for a child care centre. Collect all the kids from one place! Very convenient for families. They will need to do something about parking though as it’s very congested around school times in this area

Right next to servo. Parking and traffic congestion is already diabolical. The child care facility would be right next to the roundabout at Mt Hwy which has already had 1 fatality and multiple accident (I've seen two separate accident were car have been on their roofs!). Parking in residential street already a huge issue for residents as street become 1 way, not enough for two cars to pass, forcing people to reverse out of each other's way. No way emergency vehicles could get thru. Traffic backed up at the roundabout in all directions, the childcare centre would create more cars try and turn into the child care, 1 or 2 car lengths from the roundabout!
Local residents already have noise from the primary school, this would create additional noise right in their own back yard. This noise would go beyond school hours as they centres open earlier & finish later.

Inappropriate positioning for a childcare centre
That roundabout intersection is heavily congested and dangerous at the best of times with limited parking opportunities available, especially at school times. There have been numerous accidents at that intersection involving cyclists that frequently ride on that section of road (they do not use bike lanes and paths provided) In addition the removal of vegetation is not in line with the overlays protecting the foothills.

Local residents who directly back onto this site have not been notified about the planning application. How can residents express concerns or objection if Knox Council has not notified them at all?

The traffic & parking around The Basin in general is not functioning well. The popularity of the area has exceeded the planing & I can not see how this proposal will do anything other than make the problems worse. We need a total overhaul of the traffic & parking management plan for mountain highway from the service station to up past the shops. The new speed zones will not fix these issues.

  7. Ben commented

The more services for the area the better. No worse than any other schools or childcare on main roads in the area.

  8. Rachael Atkins commented

I understand it would be easier for some family's having the child care centre so close to a primary school...but that intersection is absolutely crazy! With constant movement from the servo, and especially drop off and pick up at the 2 local schools, that round is about already causes mayhem!
Fix the congestion first before adding an extra level of potential risk.

More childcare services is a good thing, but I hope there will be ample parking included in the centre. As a parent of a student at the school across the road I can say there is already a major shortage of car parking at school pick up time and I would be very disappointed to see this worsen if adequate parking within the centre was not planned for.

Ridiculous location for a childcare facility of this projected size! A totall lack of concern for the safety of local residents, pedestrians, children and traffic. There is no way enough parking or traffic flow would work at this particular location with the size of the local primary school. Add the busy roundabout that always has traffic backed up at peak times plus the service station, this would be a terrible idea.
While I understand the need for childcare, a different location would be ideal.

The traffic is already bad enough and have seen so many near misses of kids getting cleaned up, all because of parents not parking safely. Infrastructure needs a complete overhaul. The school doesn’t have enough parking as it is just look at the side streets around the school. The school need to do something about there parking before you add a childcare centre. Maybe knox coucil should come and look at drop off and pick up and look at how bad it is around the school area.I disagree on having childcare centre.

  12. Phil commented

Child care centre well and truly needed. Will bring extra value to the area including house prices.
Parents are often driving to multiple locations and now they have a one stop shop.
Extend the 40km time out a little and it will help. I’m sure the plans for this centre will include sufficient traffic management and if not council will ask for it.

  13. Kerry commented

Too close to an already busy roundabout, a childcare centre in this location would compound existing issues and add to traffic which is already excessive at peak times. Great to have extra infrastructure, just need to find a more suitable location.

  14. Jo commented

It is already a nightmare getting out of side streets during school drop off and pick up time. Side streets are also heavily congested and it doesn’t help when some parents parking illegally due to the lack of parking. It’s dangerous.
Has Knox Council predicted how many extra cars will be added to this particular part of The Basin and the impact it will make? Is there any plan in place to ease the congestion for the P.S as it’s continuing to grow. I think these issues need to be resolved before a 100+ child care centre adds to the problem.

I am concerned about the proposal to place a childcare centre next door to a petrol station, I hope council seriously consider the health and safety risks of exposing young children on a regular basis to the toxic fumes that are omitted from a petrol station. If an emergency occurred it would be disastrous. I would not send my children to a centre located next to a petrol station.

  16. Ian & Sandra commented

We are strongly object to the construction of a large childcare centre for 108 children.
    * It will be located on a busy dangerous intersection where there are car / cyclist accidents & regular near misses. The road is congested at various times including school pick up, drop off and peak hour.
*We currently have difficulty getting in an out of our street at these times, addition traffic will exacerbate the situation.
    * Right turning traffic will block Mount Highway & the roundabout.
    * the planning submission does not have enough staff car parking for a facility of this size. The lack of staff car parking will mean that staff are parking on our street. Our street already experiences significant access issues with parents from the local primary school parking in the morning and at school pick up.
    * Council should not approve a childcare centre next door to a busy service station where young children are potentially exposed to toxic petrol fumes. For this reason we would not send our grandchildren to this centre as there alternative childcare facilities nearby that do not pose a unnecessary risk to their health.

  17. Phil commented

The council will be aware that the property closest to the service station has been an issue for years. Stolen cars, drug manufacturing (Ice), motorbike hoons, excessive noise and arson.

A childcare centre will be a welcome relief especially one with such a beautiful and modern design.

  18. Christine Ubert commented

Too much traffic in the area with the schools and now it will be chaotic to drive on Mountain Hwy and in the area.

  19. Rob P commented

Are we aware that Knox are planning to ban parking on West side of Goodwin St totally & on East side between 2.30pm & 4 on School-days.
This will further effect traffic congestion in the area.

  20. Megan Foote commented

Whilst acknowledging the need for more high quality childcare places in The Basin I am concerned about the choice of this site. Traffic is already very congested along this section of Mountain Hwy during peak school hours. Parking is in short supply with local residents having to cope with blocked narrow streets, leaving poor visibility and safety issues for the numerous pedestrians. I am also concerned about the site's proximity to the service station. The toxic fumes emitted could present significant health risks for both the children and the staff. From my position as an early childhood educator and a parent of a local student I believe this proposal is far from ideal. It should be rejected.

  21. Amy Boyd commented

I do not have any children at the primary school, however as a local resident I know to avoid this broader area during school drop-off/pick-up due to significant congestion and road safety issues. I cannot see how a childcare centre in the proposed location will not compound the existing road safety issues, despite being required to provide ofd-street parking and with due consideration of the spread of childcare pick-up/drop-off.

As a parent of a young baby, I would never contemplate sending my child to a care centre next door to a petrol station. If this proposal passes without rejection, Council or equivalent are going to need to be abundantly clear on how this centre will be safe to accommodate children, and where liability lies.

  22. J Claire commented

This is an absurd proposal, and I am shocked it has even made it this far. This intersection is ridiculously busy, at both school times, and after work. Coming from Mountain Highway towards The Basin, it is almost dangerous attempting to get through this round-a-bout with how much traffic there is and how congested it is.
There are also serious issues with the overflow of school traffic parking in surrounding streets, destroying nature strips, creating dangerous hazrds and blocking view of pedestrians, and blocking homeowners in their driveways. Emergency vehicles and any larger sized cars would not be able to access these streets during peak hours due to the number of cars parked in surounding streets such as Goodwin and Stanley.
Adding more infrastucture to an already struggling traffic zone would be insane and downright dangerous.

Monday 22nd August 2022, 3:34pm, lights and sirens ambulance turning left from Mountain Highway into Liverpool Road not able to proceed due to traffic congestion, Liverpool Road totally gridlocked. Motorists not able to make clear for this ambulance as there is nowhere to move over too. One of many reasons these two properties must remain residential only.

  24. Sue Smyth commented

The childcare development is highly unsuitable and unsafe in this location. It will add to existing traffic congestion and increase risk to pedestrians and motorists. I also note the recent obstruction to an emergency vehicle.

Im concerned about the location of this childcare centre. Its in a blind zone already and significant changes would need to be made to slow traffic down and more importantly, deal with the extra parking and traffic this facility would bring coming from both sides of the road. People tend to not behave safely and appropriately when rushing to drop and pick kids up and Im concerned that it will become a hot spot for accidents or worse, fatalities and kids or people getting hit.

  27. Phil commented

The area is perfect for a childcare centre. Traffic is spread out over longer periods than the rush that happens at the Primary School and people are already driving slow due to the 40kph speed limit.
The Basin is currently defined as being in a childcare ‘desert’ and is at risk of falling behind in facilities for families. Would be very handy to have this facility linking in with the Primary School and would help revitalise the area.
