This is most likely the oldest residence in South Mackay. Owned by the Pratt family on the same site for over 100 years. I strongly urge Council implement heritage laws to protect thes pre 1946 homes like Brisbane City Council has. It is a typical example of a pyramid roofed cottage with bull-nose verandah that could hail from the 1890's. It was the residence of one of Mackay's most prominent builders David Pratt and his family.

To whom it may concern,
This is one of the oldest homes in Mackay and it would be a disgrace on the local council if they allow this to be changed to commercial use. It is of architectural merit and adds to the surrounding environment and has been well maintained over the years which should also be taken into consideration.
Commercial uses should be kept within close proximity to other commercial uses whereby this is predominantly a residential area of Mackay. A childcare Center is not the correct use of planning controls and should be used to better the urban environment in this local area which this change of use would not provide.
We purchased this home in 1986 in a very dilapidated state. The previous year it was in the newspaper as it was due to be demolished for an indoor Cricket Centre.
I wrote and objected, not knowing we were destined to live there.
Peter and I could see the house had so much historical significance in the area being part of the dairy farm of the Pratt family who were one of the early settlers in Mackay.
We invited Dave Pratt to come snd see the progress and he was enthusiastic to see love snd life coming back into the home.
Over the next 18 months we pulled off the roof, external boards, had the whole house cleaned and re-clad, insulated and the floor plan changed around to give us updated liveability. In 1988 our daughter Fiona was born bringing much joy and energy into the household.
The courtyard bricks were hand-picked from the Rylance collieries outside Mackay and laid by hand.
All the gardens landscaped and a fence installed to give privacy.
We had so many happy days sharing with family and friends the house and its surrounds .
As the Mackay community would, or should be, well aware that this house plays a major role in the Early days of the town.
Many of the Pratt family and their descendants still live in the city and I’m sure they would be very very disappointed to see this home disappear.
I was given photos of the family on the steps of the house not long after it was built. I’m sure it’s coming up to its 100th anniversary next year!
It’s time to help preserve Novar.
This was my family home. Doesn't matter where in the world one is, if you are born in Mackay you will always have Mackay in your heart.
It was wonderful to see the the renovation done to preserve it. Now the potential loss of this very significant heritage building at 86 Juliet Street is of real concern. Mackay people do deserve to keep their heritage and the Pratt family have played a very large part of the development of Mackay. This area is definitely more residential than commercial.
Does a hundred years mean nothing. Is it all question of money?
This should be a heritage listed property! One of the oldest in Mackay - once you start removing these icon buildings you won’t be able to stop others going that way. Please keep our history and reject this proposal.
I have visited and stayed at 86 Juliet Street South Mackay many times in the past.
To think that someone would even consider taking away a source of pride for Mackay is unimaginable. Being one of the oldest and most beautifully maintained residence in Mackay, Council must do everything in its power to save this piece of Mackay's history and implement heritage laws to protect it.
To whom it may concern,
Please do not allow the wanton destruction of this, one of the oldest homes in Mackay and beautifully restored and maintained all of its life to boot, and still in excellent order.
Council should think long and hard about their responsibilities to promote preservation (and/or conservation or restoration when necessary) of the diminishing number of old & interesting buildings in Mackay. They reflect the rich history of the city & add significant value to those who find pleasure in built heritage, be it Colonial to Art Deco & beyond.
I couldn't believe the sad sight of the once beautiful, but now butchered and neglected Commonwealth Bank building in the CBD which I see as symptomatic of the Council's long neglect of responsibility and duty-of-care for the (few) standout buildings left in the city. Mackay has ample bare sites when I last visited where green-field development of a child care centre could readily occur without the demolition of a heritage property.
I strongly suggest a list of heritage listed buildings be immediately developed to include planning change constraints on any (external) alterations and/or requests to demolish.
It's extremely disheartening to think that yet another Mackay historical landmark will be lost to "development"
I urge council to consider the massive loss of heritage that has been lost, destroyed and bulldozed over the decades in Mackay.
I find it frustrating when going through town such as Rockhampton, who have managed to preserve their heritage and old buildings and have a grand showcase of their history, only to travel to Mackay where its heritage and culture is being destroyed brick by brick, plank by plank.
Rockhampton has managed to preserve their history while designating entire areas to massive development for modern housing, infrastructure and business and residential land.
Why can't Mackay do the same?
Why won't they?
I too strongly urge Council implement heritage laws to protect these pre 1946 homes like Brisbane City Council has.
Our pioneers deserve recognition.
Our history does not begin and end at Greenmount!
This property needs to be Heritage listed with both the house and the land left as is. My wife and I purchased the block next door to this proposed development. When we purchased our place no such plan was even thought about as the place is simply stunning. The old owners of the property (before it was sold to the developers) had told us they had purchased it as the house had historical significance to them as kids. It is a shame to see they had sold out to make a quick buck. We have read through the plans thoroughly and recognized they have planned for some noise reduction and to increase traffic flow at pick up and drop off times. We have not been approached at all in regards to this development and am extremely disappointed. Keep the property as is and force re-sell of the property to either the council or someone who cares about keeping Mackay’s historical houses so the future of Mackay has recognition of its past.
As a young person in Mackay with a young family who will be needing childcare in the next few years I would still prefer to see this house and residence maintained in its current state rather than turned into a modern childcare facility. Mackay council really should be protecting these beautiful old homes as we and our children can learn so much from the history of Mackay. It is important to protect historical homes like this because once something is gone there is no coming back from that. There are plenty of other ugly new buildings in Mackay which could be demolished to make way for a childcare centre.
I object to this application for a development of a childcare centre at 86 Juliet street.
The existing property both house and land is of historical significance to the Mackay region. To lose this history and beauty that was so lovingly built and then maintained by many families would be a disgrace. This property is in excellent condition, it does not require restoration, is not a hazard and therefore no reason to be rid of it. If it cannot be heritage listed (which it most definitely should be) then it should be protected in any other way possible. What are you doing Mackay Regional Council?
Not only that, but this is a residential area and to have a large commercial building smacked right between homes is wrong. I do understand the need for more childcare in Mackay, but there are plenty other spaces in the South Mackay area that would be far more suitable for a childcare centre that will not cause yet another traffic jam on Juliet street and in turn, Black Street.
The building and giant red football entrance is an eyesore and does not suit the area.
Please reconsider this plan and save this historical building and property.
Houses of the significant historical value should be protected for our future generation.
This is one of Mackay’s most remarkable homes and to lose it would be a tremendous shame for the town. These homes should be protected for their historic value so that future generations do not lose the history and beauty of these landmarks.
Historic land marks like this can not and should not be removed!! Why are you letting the history of this great town disappear!!??
I visited the Family and this house many times back in the 1960's. My Family lived in the next Street (at 148 Kippen) until 1965. I strongly urge Council not to let his beautiful home be demolished and to be heritage listed. Way too many very old buildings have been demolished in Mackay in the past.
Please save it for our future generations. We are in danger of losing the character and soul of our city. There is going to be so much development pressure on our region in years to come, we need to start saving what little is left. Once it’s gone, the damage is irreparable.
There is not much left of the old Mackay buildings thanks to Council, pull up your sox and start listening to the RATE PAYERS, we happen to be Council employers= wages Public Servents now start doing the job properly we're sick and tired of jobs for the boys, and the loss of our heritage, also fix the fence on the Old Customs houes Greg Williamson.....
While childcare may be a necessity for many in our community, there would be more appropriate places for such a centre to be built in an already commercial zoned area, rather than a largely residential area and particularly this one with such historical significance. Mackay has many unused commercial buildings at the present time, so there are plenty to choose from.
I object strongly to the change of use for this property and for any plans for the home's ("Novar") demise. It is obviously of huge historical significance to Mackay history and one of the very few fine examples of early architecture still remaining in good condition. These types of properties should be treasured and protected from development that can occur in more suitable locations and not on historical sites. Considering it has been restored in recent years as well, it is nowhere near close to being an eyesore. It is time for Mackay to stop destroying what little history is left in our streets. Apart from the appreciation of locals, tourists look for the uniqueness of cities and if history is demolished and the city looks like any other city along the Queensland coast, why would they bother to stop.
Don’t wipe away our history. Keep our heritage homes for that’s what builds our past and memories to keep our stories alive for the future generations.
I live on black street. We love that house on the corner. I have been talking to my children about how old the house is and how many family's will have lived there. Mackay lacks heritage buildings (or they are in horrible condition) don't get rid of another beautiful piece.
Also we can't imagine having anymore traffic down the street. People already hoon down here
Please keep this beautiful old heritage home. Very sad to think you could have it removed. It is part of Mackay history and heritage. Please vac Mackay do not lose more of these amazing buildings.
I lived in Mackay for 36 years. I still class Mackay as 'home'. Please don't destroy this beautiful old home. One of the reasons I loved Mackay was for the old Queenslanders, as this one has obviously been kept in beautiful condition. Mackay Council needs to implement heritage laws. There are way too many ugly 'modern' buildings being built now in Mackay. And this one with a huge red football out the front is definitely going to be an eyesore.
Beautiful old buildings in Mackay are treated with disrespect. Mackay had so many stunning Queenslanders and they should have been protected. WHERE are our strict heritage laws?? These buildings that made Mackay should be maintained with pride and not disregarded and knocked down and replaced with cement slabs. An example, of keeping beautiful buildings is the town of Napier in New Zealand. The residents are proud of their buildings and tourists alike love the atmosphere of a heritage city! Is Mackay really proud of their heritage? I don't think so!!
Having been to the council Heritage week launch last year and hearing council say that we need to look after what little is left of our local heritage, we need to do what we say !
The thought of a child care centre in this already congested area in place of this beautiful piece of near 100 yr old piece of history is crazy, not everything is about money, I should know, I saved John Spillers house from demolition to win a Mackay council heritage award, all need to know this important part of our district, plus all these houses would make a great heritage drive , we promote Greenmount so much but there is so much more, let’s step up and do what we said we would do and knock this application on the head and set the standard for our future, with mixed old and new, why can most of other councils around Australia promote this and not us.
The safety aspect of this application is also for concern, more children and parents in more cars coming and going from the centre in an already congested area that will only be worse and more unsafe for all. The convenience of a child care centre close does not out weigh the need to remove a significant piece of our city’s soul, I’ve been to many other countries and in some the urban landscape is depressing, we need to attract people here and make them feel at home to stay not encouraging them to keep driving through to the next city. This is part of our Art Deco significance that needs to stay, we are one of two cities in the world that have the most remaining Art Deco structures why keep removing them.
I wish to formally object to the demolition of this historical piece of Mackay. Council should be working to look after these landmarks and to preserve them into the future.
As for the establishment of another traffic congestion creating business, as a local traveling trades person there are already already two very congested areas in Juliet Street. There is no argument to create another. I feel for the residents of Black & Juliet Streets who will have to endure multiple additional traffic movements in their area.
This is one of the oldest homes in Mackay and should be heritage listed and protected.
Please keep our history and reject this proposal.
Should be heritage listed too many old homes disappearing
Mackay has been through significant changes over the years. While increasing services is important, why is it at the expense of our hertitage? The Lister hospital, gone. Mater hospital, gone. Numerous Art Deco buildings in town, gone. At what point do we start preserving the past for the future?
As a tourist town, Mackay needs to retain good quality historical homes, both as a drawcard for visitors and for posterity.
It is upsetting to see council approve a commercial use application to a predominately busy residential neighborhood who are already impacted by the expanding Harrup Park. And on top of that a home of significant architectural integrity and history. It would be extremely sad to see an integral part of Mackays heritage demolished.
I do not object to a daycare centre, however I believe the location could be better served elsewhere.
When thinking of other heritage buildings in the Mackay area, most have been let down by MRC already. Do we really want to keep going down this path? Soon Mackay will not have any historical significance.
Mackay needs to respect its history much more. Too many beautiful old buildings being ripped down for pre-fab rubbish with no soul.
We need to keep these buildings. They are our history. Too many being knocked down in the name of progress. It has to stop
What cost Heritage?
I am sure there is a better place for a childminding centre than an
old Heritage house site. What is the parking availability?
Please allow the Heritage of our city to remain.
Once it is gone it is forgotten. Too much of our local landscape is disappearing.
My family has lived in and help build Mackay, since 1864.
After 5 generations in Mackay, my family and I could no longer bear to witness the utter destruction of everything that made Mackay special, so ten years ago we left .
Unfortunately the destruction continues to tear out Mackays identity, heart and soul .
And for What? All those beautiful old buildings replaced by brightly coloured angular bits of steel, to make the city as bland and insipid as everywhere else .
When will you realise that heritage depends on context, so shifting is not an option.
Your actions make Putin look like a boy scout. Shame on you !
This beautiful house needs to be heritage listed. Coming up to its 100 years anniversary next year, it would such a shame for our region to tear down such a significant part of history.
Anyone who has had the privilege to spend time in this house knows how valuable this property really is. And the photos and documents of its history that were kept with the house should have been enough to convince anyone that it should not be demolished.
Such a shame for our community.
I object to any further demolition of our history, it's not like we don't have enough vacant land, SAVE OUR REMAINING BUILDINGS, Towns with heritage buildings attract many more tourists.
Further to my 1st Comment 2 months ago, I am happy to repeat it again for emphasis:
Please do not allow the wanton destruction of this, one of the oldest homes in Mackay and beautifully restored and maintained all of its life to boot, and still in excellent order.
