Still cannot get my head wrapped around how DPTI approved this. We live across the road and the traffic is horrendous to say the least. Our home is raised and the canopy lights will shine directly into our living room and kitchen. Our neighbours and us will be employing a solicitor/lawyer and town planner to fight this OTR build. Extremely disappointed with Mitcham Council. Unbelievable.

This ongoing sage is disappointing. I am a resident directly opposite this development address even though my street number would appear to be not opposite. A number of us residents opposed the first application with Mitcham Council and it was rejected. However, it went to appeal and then we find out the land was sold on to another developer. There are lots of reasons why this is not a good idea. One lane into the land and out at a T junction intersection is not ideal. It is currently very difficult for existing residents to get on to the road due to traffic. Also fuel storage so close to residential is not acceptable. Please consider this matter carefully. The land does not suit a service station.
Thank you,
We have a residential property situated on the northern side of the Blythwood/Belair road T-junction and we have previously submitted our concerns to Mitcham Council re the building of a petrol station in this residential area. Our concerns are as follows:
. Current traffic congestion will be impacted by the entry and exit of vehicles from a property on the corner of a ‘T’ junction
. Currently there are many ambulance vehicles which already are obstructed by congested traffic at this busy road junction
. Environmental impact including air quality, lighting intrusion on adjacent residential properties ,noise impacts on local residential properties which includes the operation of a petrol station with constant entry and exit of vehicles
. Environmental impact of a business in a residential area which seems to be at odds with Mitcham council’s statements and objectives of keeping the area green and environmentally friendly. The council seems to have taken a backward step in maintaining their stated objectives.
We hope that these points are considered
Thank You
I think this is an absurd place to build it. I travel through here for work and the traffic is already hectic before this monstrosity of a build. Can’t think of a worst place for it. Someone needs to rethink this absurd placement - it’s not needed and is going to do more harm then good
My neighbour is next door to this proposed fuel station, elderly and has no email and no means to stand up for themselves.
They do not want a fuel station next door please.
For all the reasons as above comments by the neighbours
No we do not want a fuel station in our residential area.
1 - not for our children
2 - the environment
3 - bad traffic problems already
4 - respect those who have died on this corner (see white memorial cross)
5 - risk of explosion so close to the freight train
6 - all residential housing around
7 - 2 significant trees already cut down.
Facts
1. Mitcham council have already approved and completed new stormwater ready for the fuel station.
2. X convenience sold land to OTR
3. Woolworths upgraded their fuel stations commencing days after settlement
Money talks it’s a sad fact
I drive past this space almost daily. It is troublesome with how busy it already is without added conjestion from construction works or a lengthy queue from a backlog of cars waiting to get fuel. The idea to construct another petrol station on this locwtion is ludacris. There is one not more than 2km down the road at the mitcham shopping centre that is more accessible and already built in an area that is not surrounded by residents. You compromise the safety and the integrity of the houses on that street by building something that will make a) excess noise and light pollution b) toxic fumes c) hazard to the road and d) major risk of explosion no matter how 'safe' you deem it.
Re-think this decision please. Its not too late.
It’s a terrible idea to build a petrol station on the corner for various reasons
- the petrol station is right on at T intersection on a busy road and any cars coming out of the fuel station will only endanger the road safety and create more traffic in the area .
- there are lot of young kids who love riding bikes through the area and it will be danger to their safety as they come so quickly through the corner and sometimes they are very hard to spot and there is no bike lanes to begin with
-It will create more pollution which we don’t need any more of
- There is no need for a new petrol pump in the area there are already 2 within 1.5 km radius of it .
I pass through this already congested intersection daily, why would you approve a service station here? Seriously? No, SERIOUSLY?!
I house sit across the road and can vouch for the traffic congestion in the area, but can only imagine how hard it is going to be to get to sleep with the light emitted from this eyesore. I enjoy the view across the road currently and can't believe it's going to be taken away. Disappointed to say the least.
This is a disappointment for our community.
I would advise against this plan.
I live opposite the residential block of land that the Mitcham Council allowed X Convenience to plan the construction of a service station.
The block is now owned by OTR which opens 24/7
This is a very busy and dangerous section of the Belair road with traffic banked up to Springbank Road. The noise has become horrific as vehicles speed and races through the traffic lights.
It should be noted there is already a remembrance cross placed at that corner.
The Mitcham Council pontificates the greening and conservation in the area yet allows a service station with fumes and dangerous chemicals next to a railway station and surrounded by residential homes to be constructed.
They have little care for their existing ratepayers.
Money really does talk
I am shocked that a petrol station adjacent to a residential property can even be considered for approval.
This is directly adjacent (backs onto) a train stop where people including young families spend time waiting to be picked up. Very significant fencing would be needed to insulate them from the toxic fumes of a petrol station.
I cannot imagine how the traffic into and out from this service station could possibly work. A right hand turn while travelling south on this road would be almost impossible around peak hour and similarly exiting to the south would seem to be impossible as well. There are no places nearby where a U turn is feasible.
A far better use of this land would be to be purchased by Mitcham Council and used for bike and car parking (with lots of trees) for the train station.
This would be a perfect spot for a park and ride, pethaps with solar EV charging. Adelaide does not need more petrol stations. Petrol driven cars will be replaced by electric over the next 10 years and then we will be left with a permanently contaminated site for future generations to deal with.
