This shop is an original heritage Southport building over 120 years old and until very recently, it had the original horse hitching rings on the upright posts of the awning. The building should be preserved. A campaign to save the building at Owen park (amongst other historic buildings already there) was mooted in 2016. Then councillor Dawn Crichlow was reported in the GC Bulletin saying, "Even though it is not heritage listed, it is an important part of Southport’s identity and something we should not lose.
“By having it down at Owen Park we could have our very own historic general store which would be just the cutest thing.”
Instead of demolishing it, could this building be relocated to Owen Park? All the relocated buildings there could be opened to the public as part of a living Southport Heritage Park, similar to working historic villages in other towns. It could be a perfect tourist attraction, and something to visit for school excursions as it fits into the primary school local studies curriculum. I remember taking classes to visit it when I was teaching.

The 'home office' spaces are large enough to easily convert into a 2nd bedroom. This is likely to occur in at least some of these units. For that reason the # of carparks required should be for 11 x two bedroom units.

There is not much history left in Southport, this needs to be preserved as an integral part of Southport History dating back to the 1800s. To demolish history is criminal and short sighted, putting profit above preservation is short sighted ignorance.
