The Marina Theatre was and still is a fortress building of solid structure built 1927 as a live theatre and cinema. It should be returned to that state. Converting it to more shops and more flats is absurd given the suburb is already overflowing with flats and abandoned and scruffy shops. There is ONE entertainment building and The Marina is it. It should remain in limbo or orbit until its primary function is relevant again. It certainly will not sink into the Mascot Rosebery floodplain muddy sand like heavy concrete apartment blocks will. The Gardners Road shopping strip should be developed similar to Norton Street Leichhardt with restaurants and entertainment and cinemas. That is the ideal pertinent future for this precinct. To cram small apartments and shops into this classic heritage landmark is absurd and superfluous.

The Marina Theatre should restored as a heritage live theatre and cinema. Not turned into apartments and retail shops! I know I’m not the only one who think it would be a great sadness and shame to the community if this was to happen.
The marina is part of the local history. A restoration for the arts and entertainment culture in the area is needed. Why not use this beautiful building.
We don’t need more apartments in the area.
I agree. I’m old enough to to have gone to the Marina when it was a cinema. I feel, restored, it would reflect something of the heritage of the area that is being eroded with ‘development’. The Eastlakes Live development (and the earlier development of the whole area) on what was Rosebery Racecourse is an example. These can be redeveloped more appropriately, for example an arts centre, a library, a heritage centre, a community centre. The council merger has eroded the concept of Botany and it’s history.
How boring and mundane to have cheaply made apartments and shops that offer nothing to the area. Imagination and possibilities could play a huge part in the rejuvenation of this building and area. An art deco cinema, cafe restaurant and bar perhaps??
