Another aged-care facility has been proposed for Deakin, an inner south suburb with abundance of aged-care housing. Local retirees, including my mother, are becoming priced out by the local shops that increasingly cater to a wealthier new demographic and Yarralumla’s embassy staff.

The problem with this proposal is that its position at 38 Grey Street is overlooking Adelaide Avenue and is therefore only metres from a potential tram stop in Canberra’s light-rail stage 2.

The site is the only remaining land parcel along this prized inner part of Deakin. There are many other more worthwhile projects that could deliver commuters for the future light-rail including student housing, a boutique hotel or a tourism centre. Sadly, by the stage that our parents enter ‘homes’ that they’re not very mobile, so the light-rail would be of very little use.

Rather than accepting the first proposal for this site, which is currently an art gallery, the ACT Government’s planners should wait and see what other proposals are made when it releases its plans for stage 2 of the light-rail. The priority should be for projects the ensure the future success of the light-rail.
