Every major city in Australia needs Commune. The past 4 years I've been continually teaching in 6 major cities which has introduced me to many venues, its organizers and it's community. None are as passionate, professional and community driven as Sam Ali of Commune. Yes all may seem to have a similar cause but none match up to what Commune has proven to deliver. Strong continuos support of the arts, makers community, start ups and small businesses of all kinds have been supported by Commune since it's humble beginnings. Many have seen generous offers in support of small to large scale events that aim to bring people to Commune which boosts the profile of the area and also gives local businesses support. Cafe's, restaurants, shops and other small businesses in the area are sure to have made more sales around the time of any Commune event. Sam Ali and the team at a Commune have one thing that others don't... Open arms. They are more than welcoming and helpful in supporting an idea or a large scale project that matches their ethos. Sharing the love. Commune have always delivers community support through events, meet ups and major collaborations and I believe this support will continue to grow as it always has.

  23. Vanessa Bragg commented

But it's not only yoga, the people behind Commune are open, generous and it's a great way to meet people from my area with similar interests. I have discovered The Commune around 6 months ago, and I became a loyal Yogi since then! It is nice to feel part of a small community, something I have not felt in a very long time in this ever growing city!

I really hope that community can win over new development projects for once!

Very sadly Sydney has got rid of a lot of great warehouses lately, some of them with great character and history, so we just cannot let this happen this time! Not only we have to protect one of the last standing warehouses in the area from destruction to be replaced by a faceless building, but most importantly we must support a growing community of like-minded kind people who do great things for the neighbourhood.

With around 60,000 more residential apartments in a 3 Km radius, we clearly do not need new buildings, but more than ever need spaces where people can connect and build new relationships!

I support this application 200% and I am prepared to attend events to make sure our voice is heard to keep this community alive!

  40. Matthew Vandeputte commented

Commune is one of the most unique spaces I've had the pleasure of exploring in Sydney. This is what communities need MORE of. From the yoga classes to art exhibits and international food markets all being family friendly gatherings/events. It doesn't get much better than this. I hope we get to see lots more in Commune's future. If I could choose to support one development in all of Sydney it'd be this one.

  41. Tremayne East commented

I strongly support what COMMUNE offer and provide to the community and the greater folk of Sydney. It's a venue of unparallel size, heritage and opportunity which has proven to already host some fantastic and safe events and looks set to continue its great support for the community with more events, more food, more music, more arts, more crafts, more opportunities, and a lot more togetherness. This venue has to stay open and alive in a city which has already seen too much wellbeing die off.

  42. Michelle Kistima-Menser commented

Communities thrive when people can come together, express themselves in creative ways & have the opportunity to connect with others & feel part of something. Commune offers this kind of space in the inner city & as a creative myself I would love to see them grow & fulfill their vision to it's fullest which I believe will give back in Community Wellbeing.

  46. Michele Weight commented

I fully support COMMUNE in its aspirations to set up event spaces, a cafe and a place for people to do yoga, meiditaion and a range of other positive activities. I've been attending their yoga classes and I've been very impressed with the classes themselves and their mission to help people in the community with mental health conditions especially. Their donation based classes are invalueable for helping people to get healthier; body, mind and spirit. My partner who has serious depression has been attending the meditation classes and found them to be excellent.

I fully intend to continue to support COMMUNE and I'll be looking for other ways to do that. I understand that they would like to set up a healthy food cafe. As someone with a chronic gut disorder, I commend the goal and I'll be supporting them. The people behind COMMUNE are very genuine and very community minded. They are already bringing a very positive approach and culture of the area. As far as I can see, that will only continue as they expand on what they can offer the community.

Please approve the DA. The area will absolutely benefit from this venture.

    Thanks

Their events foster acceptance & embrace diversity, they celebrate the vast cultures within our neighborhood, no matter the ethnicity. Above all commune helps bring people together, in a time where there are so many things trying to tear us apart.

COMMUNE is an essential and necessary, it's an outlet for creativity and artistic endeavors, a space which aims to a provides an accepting and diverse space for all prospective pursuits in Sydney. It achieves this not only through it's regular market events providing a space for the makers of Sydney to exhibit their goods and services, but additionally through societal interactions in their provision of cafes, weekly yoga classes, and many creative workshops put on by local businesses and emerging artists; many of which I have partaken in. It is these cultural and inclusive ties that COMMUNE provides that I believe is an invaluable asset to Sydney's creative scene.

If there's any place that is a direct embodiment of the words community, individualism and self-expression, it's COMMUNE. It's fantastic that such a place exists for the people of Sydney to visit, learn something new, express their passions and creativity and simply have a great time. COMMUNE offers a safe venue and space for the community of Sydney to come together– little other venues have this potential. Sydney needs COMMUNE.

I support COMMUNE, and the development of its spaces throughout Sydney. COMMUNE has given so many local businesses, artists and creatives a place to work, socialize and showcase their talents and services to like-minded and adventurous people. Being one of the only community-based services in Sydney that provides regular workshops and markets for people still trying to keep some sort of culture alive in our city, I hope COMMUNE continues to grow through it's positive involvement in bringing these communities together.

  129. Raul Ortiz de Lejarazu commented

A city needs places like this to develop culture and sense of community and also more job opportunities for everyone.

  130. Nadine sharpe commented

I would like to provide my support for the initiatives of Commune in the City & Inner West area.

As you may be aware, the inner west and inner city are experiencing an exciting growth of creative talent. This sets us apart from the rest of Sydney and there is a real opportunity for organisations such as Commune to showcase this talent, which not only benefits the artists but also the wider community; as well as creating situations that improve the economic well-being of the artist, the events that they create have the effect of bringing the community together.

But to do this they need a venue. Unfortunately for artists there is a dearth of venues available to for like-minded people to come together and sell their creations. It is really
important for like-minded people to have the opportunity to share spaces and ideas and to be able to collaborate on projects, but most importantly to have the space to sell their creations.

Outdoor spaces are less than ideal as the variability of the weather plays havoc on the success of these spaces. I attended two markets last weekend, both were rained out, meaning that crowds stayed away and I was unable to cover my costs of attending the markets. Devastating for a sole trader!

I understand that Commune intends to use the proposed space for a variety of purposes that will benefit not only someone in my position, but many different sectors of the community. In this day and age, where the way people live is becoming much more insular and disconnected, initiatives that bring the community together are increasingly important. Who wants another set of apartments that is going to exacerbate these issues? To help communities thrive there needs to be social initiatives that aren't profit driven.

I strongly urge you to approve the Commune development application to support initiatives that bring creative communities together, in turn bringing communities together.

  131. James Clifforb commented

I support this development application. COMMUNE has been a fantastic addition to the City of Sydney's cultural scene and does a lot to support local business and the community on an inclusive basis. 132. Natalia Horinkova commented

We need more places like COMMUNE where the community of people can meet, get together always for a good cause, where we can educate our selves and others, have events that support local businesses and neighbours.
Therefore, I support this development with all my heart.

  133. Lizzy Medynskyj commented

COMMUNE is of great value to Sydney’s cultural scene, they are forever supporting myself and other emerging artists who ive had the opportunity to connect and grow with through COMMUNE's community based events. Sydney needs more venues like this to open and stay open in order to flourish. I wholeheartdely approve of this application 110%.

  134. Kerrilee Ross commented

I've only attended one event at this venue since recently moving to the area and it was amazing! I'm therefore very supportive of this development and the need to support cultural venues within the inner city of which COMMUNE is a vital part of the Redfern/Waterloo community. It is a place where I felt welcomed, safe, supported, respected and included. COMMUNE encourages diversity, inclusion, creativity and equality in a time when we need it most - and for the people who need it the most. I was very impressed by their professional attitude and the respect they show the community and all attending their events.

  135. Erin McSweeney commented

I support this development having personally experienced the good that this venue does. Public space and cultural venues are essential to the vitality of any community and are increasingly being swallowed up by residential and commercial development in our inner city.

Commune on Bourke Street is a wonderful example of fresh-thinking entrepreneurs recognising a community need and doing something about it.

I attend yoga by donation each Saturday morning at Commune. I started attending because I felt that having some kind of regular physical activity, with others and with a focus on mindfulness would be beneficial for my mental health. The Commune yoga classes are by donation and therefore accessible. I couldn't afford to go to another inner city yoga studio.

The classes are fantastic, safe and inclusive and I look forward to attending each week. I am also on the look out for other events that Commune is holding and am keen to attend. It would be great if they were able to expand on their current offering.

  136. Mathew commented

I support this development. The COMMUNE has is a valuable asset to Sydney’s culture, supporting local artists, individuals, businesses and people of the community. Sydney needs more venues like this to flourish. I approve of the is development and in the future hope that there are more like it in other neighborhoods.

  137. Lana Colbert commented

Commune offers something that the Sydney community lacks and yet needs. The support which Commune offers to local artists and small businesses is valuable and is essential for the development and evolution of the art and community culture which we pride ourselves in. Commune offers a platform of support and exposure for many people which they would otherwise not receive and I believe it will be a shame and a loss for the city and it's people if this wonderful project didn't continue. Keep up the great work!!

  138. Paul Ryan commented

I support this Development. I have been attending events and functions at the Commune for 3 years now, and they have always been safe and beneficial to the community. Never outrageous or crazy. He is a really stand-out guy, a leader.

  139. Stocko commented

Commune have done an awesome job integrating different & like-minded people under the one creative working space. We have seen many communities around the world who have shifted towards this approach to creative spaces, and it always has a positive impact on the culture of the local community. Sydney's future as a liveable global city is being challenged by a scarcity of culture and diversity. Community underlies and connects everything — it is community spaces like Commune that help to dissolve barriers, foster new ideas, and provide us with the opportunity to serve others by engaging, volunteering, joining in. I support the DA to expand Commune's capabilities as a safe, vibrant venue that serves our ever-evolving city.

The Commune has played a large part in my life over the past 2 years, bringing stability to my life as a creative business owner, the opportunity to exhibit as an artist, and many meaningful connections through wider networks. In big cities, such openness and opportunity is rare. Sam Ali and his team's modus operandi has always had community at its heart, a motivation that belies their youth. Commune is community. Commune is a space that allows people outside of one culture/tradition to participate and be a part of events hosted by their neighbours. This opening/platform shares the spirit of such events with all members of a community to learn and understand those traditions that inform the people around them. Events hosted there have always been well received, generated good crowds and benefitted surrounding businesses. Every Council community should be encouraged to have a Commune or something that shares its vision.

  153. Dina Hany commented

COMMUNE has been an integral part to my growth both as an artist and person. I arrived in Sydney a little over a year ago - unaware of how creatives worked and a little culture shocked with the art/design scene, one that was based around agencies rather than independent creatives who were willing and able to push this city forward. COMMUNE does just that and I was lucky to be a part of it from the start. It gave me the space to figure out what I wanted to do and connected me to like minded people who play by their own rules.

COMMUNE brings people together to 'share the love', shortening the distance between creatives, their relationship to the city and their surroundings. That 'love' is in everything; from creative endeavours to community events promoting peace and tolerance. I've been a part of it ever since both as an observer and participant - in that sense I can honestly say it's exactly what this city needs and aches for. I couldn't recommend it enough.

  154. Georgie Avis commented

COMMUNE is important to Sydney. It is one of few spaces actively supporting and facilitating creative practice and a local creative community. How much did these fake "hipsters" get paid to write up all these comments on planningalerts.org.au? (ie: Sabrina Khan, Mindy Ison, Georgie Avis, Dina Hany etc)

If someone could let me know I'd be most grateful!

Back to topic. I can obviously see lots of issues with this development including

    * Street Parking - spaces are already fully occupied.
    * Increased Traffic
    * Increased pollution as a result of traffic
    * Increased noise to the surrounding apartments and residents from opening a public venue and not to mention from the increase in traffic

Bourke St and Lachlan St is already full of cars every day of the week. You need to consider this before giving approval.
