I absolutely support this application. 12am is reasonable, the venue is in a low residential zone and the area needs vibrant night spots where locals can go and see live music.

  2. Brett commented

I also support this. As long as a fine balance between entertainment and housing is maintained, it would be great to see the Enmore side of Addison road turn into a vibrant area.

  3. Jane Citizen commented

I would like to ensure that amplified music, particularly after 9pm on weeknights, is kept indoors in a soundproofed space, to respect workers who live in surrounding areas. If reasonable measures have been taken in regards to this, I also support this application.

  4. K commented

I live in agar street and have done for 15 years. It's a quiet residential street, so is WEMYSS street and all of the surrounding streets. I don't mind music until 10pm but not midnight and that would depend on how "amplified" it is. I don't fancy 5-6 hours sleep a night really, 10pm-6am would make a good 8 hours sleep and would be fair to everyone in my opinion. I'd not oppose a 10pm closing time.

  5. K webster commented

I strongly oppose the rooftop where I see there are plans for 10 tables. At 6 people per table that's 60 people six nights a week until midnight and 10pm on Sundays. I live directly behind this in agar street which up until now has been a quiet residential street. There are babies, preschoolers and kids doing their hsc in agar st. this application is asking for too much.

  6. Vicki commented

    I wholeheartedly support this application.
It is important to the community that the council to allow a good mix of residential and entertainment options in order to allow Sydney to remain a cultural hub.

What about parking? Esp with bike path plan?

  9. Andrea commented

In theory I support the development, but as a resident who will be directly impacted by the increased hours and inclusion of amplified music until midnight most days of the week, I would like to suggest the following:
DJs/live music is kept indoors and rooms suitably soundproofed.
During weekdays (Mon-Thurs), cut off times for music be amended to 10pm.
The number of rooftop tables be decreased to ensure levels of sound is reduced.

There are also 3 other DA's for large scale residential properties currently in front of council for consideration. I would suggest that in light of this new application that will only ensure to bring further parking restraints, that all current residential applications should include sufficient parking.

Marrickville needs more places that offer evening entertainment. "District" is an inclusive space in which LGBTQI people feel welcome, which is something to be encouraged and supported. The cafe is spacious and can easily accomodate 100 people. The area is low density and I am sure the music would stay at reasonable level. I whole-heartedly support this application.

  11. Kevin Privett commented

I feel it's about time sydney developed a night cafe culture where a venue can serve as a multi purpose facility. 'District' given its location, business owner and staff would be a perfect venture allowing to rise a level of community awareness in Marrickville. You need to do this.

  12. Michael Hollis commented

I give this plan my full support. Because of my work hours I would love District to be open at night.
Marrickville is known for being a creative, diverse and community-oriented suburb and that's why I live here.
It is encouraging to see a business owner thinking creatively to give breath and life to the night economy.
Something more refreshing than the same looking old man pub we seem to have on every corner anyway.
It's also exciting for there to be a safe night spot for our queer community.

Let's give opportunity to businesses rather than continue the license suffocation we've seen happen to small businesses throughout the rest of the city.

  13. Mitchell Donaldson commented

    I absolutely support this application.

Knowing Ash from Satellite she always respects her neighbours and District would be no different.

More late night venues are just what this area needs.

  14. Caleb commented

Would really like to see Addison road Main Street continue to thrive but once again a little more clarity on amplified music, where the DJs will set up (indoor/outdoor) aswell as a bit of flexibility on traditional working hours that have been mentioned previously. Keep the communication and best of luck.

  15. S.Watts commented

While I support local venues, consideration to residents should be paramount. It should be indoor and sound proofed and 10 pm closing. We have recently experienced the problems with noise where we felt trapped inside our home due to loud people, loud mobile phones users and smokers, making it impossible to use our backyard and have windows and doors open. It also make it hard to carry on with daily activities and have undistured sleep. Any kind of new venue will be an impost on residents particularly when like us, there has not been this kind of establishment before.

  16. Daniel Chambers commented

I support this application and think it would be an asset to the area. It is somewhere that I would definitely go to regularly if it lives up to the design plans.

I understand that there are concerns around parking, though the area is well serviced by buses and the DA seems like it is aiming to attract more locals than those that need to drive. I don't think parking should be used as an excuse not to increase either residential or commercial properties in the area. Possibly timed parking with signage should be considered for nearby streets though.

As the planes overhead make noise until 11pm, maybe this should be the cutoff for outside music? Inside and not disturbing neighbours it should be 12am.

Would be great to have a place on Addison road where you could get a coffee until midday ... Ash is a lovely community-maker and this will be a really special place for people to come together, enjoy music, have a glass of vine / or a cup of coffee and relax. I fully support this application.

    I thoroughly support this application.

District cafe has given marrickville a new, exciting and inclusive space which promotes diversity, acceptance and of course provides excellent food and coffee!

Marrickville (particularly the addison road end) is in need of spaces that provide night time entertainment- especially spaces that will encourage a positive night time culture!

    Fully endorse!

  20. Adrian Burns commented

I fully support this application to extend the operating hours and increase patronage. The venue is run responsibly with a diverse clientele, it would be more of an asset to the area.

  21. Emily Copp commented

With due respect to neighbours, I think that an establishment such as this which contributes to the vibrancy and diversity of our community would be wonderful. It is a shame we do not have more of a nighttime culture in Australia. I spent many years living in Spain (where dinner time out starts around 9.30pm) and adored being able to go out close to home and socialise in a relaxed setting. To have such a space in the Marrickville community would be an asset!

  22. Larrisa Jones commented

Totally support this application - it's important to keep the main streets of inner west hubs like Marrickville and Newtown a buzz with culturally interesting and engaging venues which are safe and supportive spaces for all facets of the community.
Venues which trade late keep the streets brighter and safer for those working late and travelling alone.
I currently live a few doors down from a venue licensed to 3am and do not notice the noise - into just becomes part of the fabric associated with living in the inner city. Previously living on a main road was much louder due to traffic noise from heavy vehicles.

  23. Darren commented

    I wholeheartedly support this application.

Knowing these business owners for years gives me confidence they will work with the neighbourhood and will add much needed vibrancy to this area.

  24. Elisia Manson commented

What a lovely addition to the area. I fully support such a new small business with entertainment to this prescient..

  25. Billie Muchmore commented

I 100% support this application. With the dwindling numbers of good venues left, the inner west is crying out for people like Ash to put their hand up to give it a shot. We need to breathe some life back into our dying towns, which used to be so colourful and vibrant - the reason why most of us moved here in the first place.

I know Ash as an incredibly responsible cafe owner and total Wonder Woman. If there's going to be someone out there to take this on and make it work for everyone, it's her.

  26. Ivan Crozier commented

I fully support this application, and think that it will improve the quality of life for the citizens of Marrickville and visitors alike. I have been a patron of all three of Ash Houghton's cafes; they at each all important community hubs, being diverse, inclusive, and providing employment opportunities for locals - not only her staff, but the local businesses she supports in buying her supplies, the artists she employs to decorate her spaces, and in this case the DJs she is proposing to employ for entertainment. The community needs this space, and others like it.

There is no suggestion that this is going to be a heaving nightclub five nights a week; I would be surprised if people would be able to hear the music over the airplanes over head, the buses driving past, and the motorcycles that are far noisier than what is being proposed here - which is more like one of those cosy, cool bars that are found all over Europe. Having DJs would be no louder than streaming music from a laptop - but it would provide a unique space in Marrickville for local and up-coming performers to develop their art - which is of crucial importance given the closure of so many venues around Sydney.

At a time when there is a significant increase in homophobic and transphobic violence in Sydney (and especially in the inner west), it is important that locals have somewhere safe to go out. Being a café/bar will mean that there is somewhere to go for local entertainment throughout the week without necessarily relying on alcohol, like at a pub - but rather to go to a community space where we can relax with friends, listen to music, and enjoy the fantastic food and coffee for which Ash's other ventures are renowned.

Marrickville needs this venture. Ash is providing an important community service bub offering it. It has my full support.

  27. Liz barrett commented

    I wholeheartedly support this application.
Marrickville has long been a critical hub for creative projects and live music in Sydney. This project continues that proud tradition and will support the community through providing a space for culture to thrive and a boost to the economy.

I have lived in and around this area for most of my adult life. Addison road seems like an ideal location for such a development given its high level of existing inner city noise and close proximity to both public transport and other late night venues.

Addison road experiences high amounts of traffic (including trucks) and is directly under the flight path, to the point where you can't hear a person next to you speaking when a plane flies overhead.

  28. Josh S commented

Marrickville is becoming the new cultural heartland of Sydney and it's because of venues like this proposed and the people behind them. Sydney's lost some of its vibrancy (and its queer spaces) to politicians and developers and it's only through venues like this that it'll get some of it back. Satellite Cafe in Newtown is up there with the best in Sydney (if not THE best) and I support the people behind it and their other ventures. Who could say no to more safe queer spaces?

  29. Charlotte Moules commented

    I 100% support this application

  30. Charlotte M commented

As a local resident (Cowper st) and young queer women I totally support this application. Many of the queer spaces in Newtown and Enmore have been turfed out by gentrification and bigger business so it will be nice to have a small local space to gather. Small business with good intentions for our community and culture should be supported.

  31. Tori Folkard commented

I support this application wholeheartedly. This would be a great addition to the area.

  32. Zac Turner commented

This area NEEDS a spot where people can come and collaborate during the day and night in a creative space. I've seen these guys do what they do all over the inner west and they do it incredibly well. Very strong sense of community and overall good vibes all round. Plus the coffee and food is off the hook, so i know any plans of progression and development will be just as amazing.

  33. Leggers commented

I support this application. Given the aircraft noise overhead it's hard to argue that music would be detrimental until curfew time.

Also that part of Addison Rd could do with some vibrancy - it could do with a good refresh.

  34. Seb commented

    Hooray!

Marrickville is such a fun neighbourhood, and this would be yet another wonderful reason to visit. Ash has done a great job with Satellite over the years, and I am confident that she and her team will do a similarly wonderful job here.

Having spaces that cater to all hours of the day, from breakfast to a fun evening, is a normal part of any confident, creative culture. Go Marrickville!

  35. Pete manwaring commented

I am very supportive of this application. Having a proven operator who understands the value of community and the balance of local amenity is exactly what our area needs.

  36. Darren Mapes commented

I fully support this application. I love the sense of community at Ash's Satelite cafe & I think this venue will be a great contributor to inner west artistic precinct.

  37. Ari Burkhart commented

What a great venture for this area to help stimulate both business and community. Ash's projects in the inner west have been inclusive and respectful affairs that are sucessful as this one will surely be as well.

  38. Gaz commented

    100% Support.
Council should 100% support and assist this new business to thrive and grow. This commercial business strip of Addison rd has been neglected for too long... they don't even have garbage bins anymore either side....
Supporting this application is a no brainer....

  39. Emmanuel Galanos commented

As a local resident (Perry St), I support this application.

The area is undergoing growth in population with the large number of apartment developments and is in major need of venues like this.

In addition, Ash's proven cafe experience and serving of the queer community makes this a venue an essential community enhancement that will only enhance Marrickville.

I think it would be much better to allow the full development than to over cautiously restrict hours. If sound does become an issue, it would be better to approach the problem methodically with sound level measuring and appropriate proofing measures.

  40. Lyn Mac commented

    I wholeheartedly support this application.

Knowing Ash from Satellite for many years I have absolute confidence that District will be managed professionally and that any concerns will be addressed through consultation and collaboration with the community to achieve a win win outcome. The Queer community needs a safe space venue in Marrickville and it will benefit from Council approving this application.

  41. Laurie Hopkins commented

Absolutely let's go! I'm a nurse and a shift worker so having a decent place to go afternoon a late shift or before a night shift would really improve my quality of life. City living gotta love it!

  42. T commented

We oppose this application in it's current form.
The residents in this area already suffer from heavy aircraft noise being under the flight path of the main runway. Aircraft is restricted to 10pm to allow residents rest time and allowing "DJ's to play some amplified music" until midnight would reduce this rest time.
Also the area suffers from drunk and noisy patrons walking by from nearby late closing pubs and this would just add to that problem.

  43. Mae Campbell - Emery commented

Local resident who lives one house down - so excited by this development! Cafe owner/staff are respectful, friendly, community minded and responsive! This particular stretch of addison road really really needs entertainment/dining options in the evenings! I hope to see it approved - and thus improve the area immensely!!

  44. Lillian Dwyer commented

I am 100% in support of this application. As someone who lives very nearby, I am excited at the idea of a close venue for music and one that has an inclusive vibe!
Given Ash's ethos and skill in curating spaces this will be a draw card for the neighbourhood.
This will really enhance the vibrancy and culture of the area, with a much needed night spot to relax with friends and neighbours.
Considering double glazing is needed regardless due to the flight path overhead, I doubt there could be any issues with noise.

  45. Gwilym Anton Elias commented

I fully support this application for increased opening hours and amplified music, for safe Queer spaces and cultural nightlife.

  46. Ryan Henwood-White commented

I live close to the premises and fully support this endeavor. As a local I believe we are in dire need of more queer venues, particularly in Marrickville. It's the closest place that feels like home outside of home.

  47. C commented

I strongly object to this DA.

The advertising for this venue is already up. "Klubdistrict" wants to be known as a "techno powerhouse". This is completely at odds with the working families and elderly residents who live in the neighbouring properties.

When will the Inner West Council be notifying impacted residents via mail? Our elderly neighbours do not have access to these online Planning Alerts. Will the notification period be extended to give these members of the community an opportunity to respond?

  48. H commented

I oppose some aspects of this application. In particular the application to play amplified music until midnight. The sorrounding streets are full of young families like myself as well as older people. The owner states on her business own FB page the following:

"It's an application to flip our little Addison Rd queer haven into a local night spot where we all come alive, with trading hours of 6am to midnight Monday to Saturday, and 8am to 10pm Sundays. We're also gunning for the use of the cute little courtyard out back, which i'm roofing in with a fancy-schmancy polycarbonate so none of you will get sunburnt nor rained on. It'll be full of plants, fairy lights and other creatures of the night. Aaaaaaaaand we're also applying for the ability to have DJs in there weds to sunday - we want the ability to, so we can all get our dancing shoes on"

This seems to contradict the DA application which states music will only be 'background noise.' I am also offended by the suggestion in the DA that as we all live under the flight path then music until midnight is acceptable. It is a different kind of noise and aircraft noise stops much earlier. The DA also includes outdoor entertaining, will music be also be amplified to the outdoor area? The owner makes no provision for soundproofing or closure of doors while music is being played.

I support an evening restaurant application but only with extensive soundproofing if music is to be amplified, agreement that doors and windows be closed and trading hours to 10pm.

  49. V commented

    oppose this application.
I feel the applicant has chosen to deliberately open as a small local cafe and then attempt to convert into a bar /local night spot, to possibly avoid more objections and ‘get a foot in the door’.
I do not think this mainly residential strip of Addison Road is in “dire need” of night life (as stated by previous supporter). The area has young families and many long established elderly residents, who will be greatly affected by midnight closing of such a venue. The residents within close proximity to the cafe (of which I am one) are already subjected to intermittent aeroplane noise until 11pm each night, and I do not like the idea of constant noise from “amplified DJ’s” (as the applicant has requested) will continue a further hour past the airport curfew.
Finally, I strongly object to our neighbourhood becoming the next red light district /dance den /nightspot as promoted and boasted by the applicant via their personal and business social media pages…”Here's our next little project we're getting off the ground on Addison Road - new red light district for Sydney we say! Local.. Queer.. Underground.. Love Affair.. “ “I've just handed a (not so) little document over to Council, and in a matter of a few months we'll hopefully have ourselves a new little off-beat, underground paradise, right in the heart of Addison Rd. Red light District... Watch out.. We're coming for ya.” ….
There are numerous bars and night spots offering extended hours entertainment and dancing venues within 15-20 minutes walk of Addison Road in Enmore, Newtown and Marrickville. These bars are welcoming of the diverse community the inner west houses, and more to the point, these bars are operating in area’s that have been long established as an entertainment area, and thus have much lower residential houses surrounding them, but more pointedly, with those that choose to move into that area fully aware they will be experiencing the noise (and other antisocial behaviour sometimes) associated with these businesses and their extended hours.

  50. C commented

There are numerous problems with this application and we will be making a full objection detailing all of the issues.
The owner of this business is openly telling people in person and on social media that she intends to run it as a bar.
To submit the application as a section 96 is dishonest and should not have even made it across the counter at council.
Until she goes through the proper application process for what she wants to do there, it's a waste of everyones time. There are hours of work involved in researching planning controls in order to lodge a thorough objection.

  51. Adrian commented

Fully supported. This is an appropriate business strip, which has nearby restaurants opening. There is a very diverse local population whom will benefit from this premises, perhaps making the area more inclusive. The request appears to be similar in nature to a small bar and I'm sure the requisite requirements for amplified (fancy word for music through speakers) music will be adhered too. The site was previously a restaurant, trading in to the evening. Of note, nearby Henson Hotel was granted a pub licence after initially applying for a restaurant licence, it too has larger capacity and an outdoor area and play area in very close proximity to residences. This is very similar, only on a much smaller scale on a commercial strip. Parking would be no more of any issue than it already is, considering lost people are more likely to drive to a restaurant than a bar. Can't wait.

  52. CGrant commented

Not sure I would refer to that strip of shops as a 'business strip' or a 'low residential area'. There are flats above all shops in that row as well as a block of flats next door. Residential Agar Street and Weymss Street back onto the back area of this property.

If soundproofing was of a high standard and there was no background noise and thumping bass (particularly at night) then I can imagine the residential neighbours would remain happy. NB: Local pub, The Henson, doesn't have amplified music at night. Not a suitable comparison.

I live on Addison Road and at night it is a quiet street - we sleep with our windows open and our bedroom faces the street. At night, Addison Road is not the bustling commercial strip that some people are painting it to be, therefore sound control at the venue would be of upmost importance.

  53. Emily Doherty commented

I believe that the aforementioned request for DA approval of 107 Addison Road to increase their licensed hours to 6am-12am will be beneficial and necessary to the ongoing development of the Marrickville area. I believe the owner of the lease and as such carer of the premises will comply and act in a conduct that is considerate and conscientious of the venue, surrounding neighbours and local council and citizens. This is typified by the longstanding presence and success with other businesses the applicant is responsible for, Satellite Cafe in Newtown and formerly Velvet District in St Peters. Both of these businesses have worked to create a safe community space for our LGBT citizens and surrounding locals that frequent these spaces, creating unity and allowing people to meet and network in creative and positive ways. 107 Addison Road is an asset to the local community and I implore Marrickville Council to approve of what will only be a positive attribute to the area for years to come.

  54. Jacinta O'Brien commented

It seems highly unusual to want to develop such an establishment in the middle of a residential area. The application seems innocuous enough but what it actually results in is a nightclub, regardless of it finishing at midnight, in a densely packed, predominantly residential area.

What happened to the Annandale hotel should be a lesson for all that such entertainment and residents just don't mix. This application should be rejected. From the Satelitte Cafe's own Facebook page, I certainly wouldn't want it near my home given I start work at 7am. Uphold the rights of the residents.

  55. HK commented

I too am all for the aforementioned request for DA approval of 107 Addison Road.
Marrickville is a diversifying area with a mix of residential, commercial and social venues within close proximity to one another. Being part of the LGBT community and living in the area for 15 years now, I welcome above, safe community space. There are many LGBT citizens and surrounding locals that frequent these venues which in return creates unity and inclusion which is what Marrickville is all about.
Addison road isn't strictly residential but rather a mixed commercial, social and residential area. I find it ironic that people are adverse to the possible noise of the above yet are tolerable of the noise from other venues like the Henson, Vic on the Park and Factory Theatre. If they adhere to the cut off requirements then it shouldn't really be an issue.

Living in very close proximity to the Henson Hotel and on top of a crest we are constantly bombarded with noise from patrons the children's crèche and music all weekend till late. In addition to this is also the noise of music that carries over from the Vic and Factory Theatre on a regular basis. I'm sure this too can be heard from Addision Rd.

  56. Andy commented

There are so many problems with this development. Live music until midnight in a residential area with young families. 100 patrons in approximately 100 m2 is just dangerous (and a 250% increase). The fact that it is obviously a nightclub/live music venue but the application is being submitted as a modification of a cafe/restaurant. Breaches planning instruments and the building code by not having enough toilets (1 for 100 patrons), or the required no. of car spaces. No mention of what happens to patrons in the courtyard when it supposedly closes at 10.00pm. Trying to start a nightclub at a side that's completely unsuited for it.

  57. T commented

I find it laughable that people are comparing this application to The Henson and Vic on the Park clearly they are and have always been pubs whereas this has not. The applicant has been quoted on Facebook as turning this area into a nightclub/red light district. This is not in line with the residential area and existing facilities. If we want to compare then lets compare this with Kings Cross. How did that turn out?
Using the LGBT tag does not make this somehow acceptable. Kings Rd Newtown would be a much better location for this venue.
    Strongly object to this application.

  58. Jain Now commented

    I support this application.

Marrickville, in particular Addison Road and surrounds lacks much evening or night time activity or economy. This venue and proposal is well thought through and offers a safe space that welcomes LGBTIQA communities, friends, families and allies that is not a pub or a restaurant. A small bar with music will be a great addition to the local community. I think with respectful trading hours and amplified music hours as demonstrated in the application, this venue and the local neighbourhood can co-exist and be mutually beneficial. Very exciting !

  59. Jennifer KIllen commented

I do not support this application because it does not offer an increase in offstreet parking provision to balance the increase in the number of patrons from 40 to 100.
I am opposed to this application because there is no plan to provide sound proofing to protect residents from the effects of amplified music.
This is not a minor change as the number of patrons would more than double if it were approved.
I do not see a bar of any size as a welcome addition to the local community especially a bar that will be playing music late into the night.
As a long term Marrickville resident I know there are already many Queer friendly spaces locally - there is no need for another business which will profit from the reduced amenity caused by this type of development.
While I am pleased to see that this business owner has moved out of my immediate locality I am concerned for the many people who will be adversely affected if this is approved.

  60. J commented

I also support this application. This is a rapidly changing area with residential and commercial developments going up from agar st all the way to Enmore Rd.
I would much prefer a local business direct some of this change than big developers who don't care about the area and the community.

  61. Anna commented

I strongly object this application! The increase in patron numbers, amplified music from early hours to midnight is not reasonable for this part of addison road. Young families and elderly residents who live around the area will be adversely affected by this development. How do you expect young children and elderly people to sleep through such noise? It will have a very negative impact on the community.

The applicant intends to create a dance club as quoted by the applicant's facebook page, "Red light District... Watch out.. We're coming for ya.

So over the next couple months I'm gonna tease you all with a bunch of beats and breaks we'll be vibing behind closed doors. Our boy @jordvato and I will be pulling rank on the decks, alongside our very own Kooky goddess (you all know who I'm talking about) and whoever else we decide to crash tackle for fun.

So here's to a (hopeful) new little nightspot/cave/dance den.... Let Sinchi Collective take you on your first ride... Feel your blood run thru your veins from 11mins.... Then from 44mins get your dancing shoes on Marrickville! Game. F****. On".

  62. NLK commented

I am all in favour of local venues, queer spaces, and the revival of Sydney's night life, particularly in the Inner West. HOWEVER, as someone who lives close to venue in question, I am not comfortable with the perametres the applicant is requesting and I object this application.

107 Addison Road is not a suitable location for amplified music late at night. The area surrounding the property is mixed-zoning, with a high residential population comprising of families, young professionals, elderly people, etc. There is limited traffic and next to no noise after about 9:30pm during the week. Very few of the local businesses trade into the evening, and none of them play amplified music.

To introduce a nightspot that plays amplified music up to 10pm seven nights a week (potentially until midnight 6 nights a week) would cause a huge disruption to all surrounding residents. The area is not a red light district (to quote the applicant), and should not be expected to turn into one overnight. The location is appropriate for a late-night trading cafe, wine bar or poetry lounge, but not for a nightclub with an emphasis on DJs and dancing, as is the applicants intention.

We had issues with the previous residents of the property playing loud music midweek past 11pm. It was impossible to sleep. The walls are all shared between properties, with music pervading through them with ease. If the applicant wants to play amplified music every night, all shared walls would need an exceptional amount of sound-proofing both upstairs and down to ensure surrounding residents don't feel like they're directly inside the nightspot.

There are many other areas within Marrickville, further from residents and closer to the industrial properties that are only occupied during business hours, that would be far more suitable for the type of venue and hours the applicant is proposing. A quiet street with no current late-night trading is not one of those areas.

As a neighbour of the property in question, these are the parametres I would find suitable:

+ Trading hours up to 8pm Monday to Tuesday
+ Amplified music up to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays ONLY
+ Trading hours up to 10pm on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays (music volume kept to a minimum)
+ Night-time use of the courtyard to be limited to Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
+ Limited music before 8am Mon-Sat (or before 10am on Sunday).

I previously lived directly above a nightspot - I chose to live there with the full understanding that music would be playing late. Just as no-one should move above or near a nightspot and expect night-time silence, no-one should move into a quiet neighbourhood and assume they can introduce late-night noise overnight.

I thoroughly support this exciting endeavour. Sydney has lost its vibrancy and interesting venues since laws have been introduced and developers have seized the resultant opportunities.
It's so good to see someone trying to redress the balance in a responsible and respectful way. I have no doubt that the applicant will put in place all the measures required to sound proof the venue, so that it may exist harmoniously alongside the residents.

  64. Gillian commented

As a resident of the surrounding street, I oppose this DA as it currently stands. As the applicant would now like an outside courtyard which holds approx 60 people we can only assume the amplified music will be played out there. This is not appropriate for this high residential, quiet area. Even just the voices of 60 people must be taken into consideration as a disruption to neighbours. There is also no off street parking for this 150% increase in patrons and change of hours.

In reading the responses that are in favour of this DA, some of the reasons that are in support of this application are completely unfounded. The first is that the area is low residential. This is not true. In fact the building is surrounded by houses and flats - it even shares walls with residential properties. Secondly, it was noted that as Marrickville already has aircraft noise, the area can cope with amplified music. The continuous sound of music playing across the neighbourhood is very different to planes which are distributed across different flight paths at allocated time slots.

As for other responses in support of this application saying that they trust the applicant will be respectful of the area, this needs to be put in writing in the DA.

If the music and people are to be moved inside by a certain time, this needs to be stated in the DA, as does the soundproofing of the building.

Unfortunately, right now judging by the promotion on Facebook and the DA as it stands, it seems as if the applicant would like to create a "nightspot/cave/dance den" without taking into consideration the way the sound and increased traffic will affect the neighbourhood.

As a long time resident of the inner west, Newtown and Marrickville, I fully support this application. I believe that this application is but another step towards Marrickville becoming one of the most creative, diverse, welcoming and exciting suburbs in Sydney.

In my support of this application I put forward two main arguments:

The positive atmosphere and cultural importance of Ash Houghton’s other cafe -Satellite.
The opportunity of creating a culturally diverse and exciting precinct at the intersection of Addison and Illawarra Road.

Firstly, through her work at Satellite, Ash has cultivated the most accepting and safe space in the area. The large number of people who would call themselves “regulars” at Satellite do not subscribe to any particular demographic or walk of life, but all feel welcome once they walk into the cafe. With that being said, Satellite’s role as a queer space should not be undersold. In my patronage at the cafe in the past 12 years, I have seen LGBTQI people of all ages and walks of life be welcomed into Satellite with open arms. Ash treats her customers as if they were her family, and it is a positive, safe and welcoming atmosphere that spreads through the surrounding community as a whole

Satellite is not just a cafe, it acts as a meeting place for a great number of amazing people to meet and catch up in total comfort and in the knowledge that they can be whoever they want to be. I believe that it is this energy that Ash is attempting to cultivate at District as well. With Marrickville already having such a strong sense of community, the continued growth of a space that would promote such an accepting environment can only be a positive thing.

Secondly, I believe that the current growth of wider Marrickville as a suburb and in particular Addison road, there is a real chance to create a truly special precinct at the intersection of Addison and Illawarra Road. There is a great deal of under utilised spaces and shop spaces at that intersection, which in reality could be used in interesting, engaging and dynamic spaces (such as cafes/bookstores/bars/record stores/art galleries/performance spaces/retail/grocery stores). The extension of the current licence at 107 Addison Road could only promote this approach more. With the impending influx of numerous high density living options coming to the area, it will be important to cater for these people and provide day and night spaces for everyone. The area has already proved that it can sustain a late night venue with the trading hours of The Vic on the Park Hotel, Henson Park Hotel, and most recently the opening of the Barzaari bar/restaurant at 69 Addison Road (which has outdoor seating, amplified music and trades until midnight).

Marrickville is growing, I hope that a creative and safe space such as District can grow with it and provide a late night option for the residents of Marrickville to enjoy until the more than reasonable hour of 12am. I totally support all the parameters of this application, and would always continue to support the growth and support of any space like it in my suburb.

  66. Bernhard Huber commented

The application to have trading hours at 107 Addison Road extended from 6am to midnight and to "allow DJs to play amplified music is inappropriate for this location. Whilst it is true that Marrickville is a creative hub with an increasingly lively nightlife, I believe that DJs each night of the week playing loud techno beats (with an emphasis on repetitive bass beats below 200 Hertz- 'subwoofer thumps') is inappropriate for a densely populated part of this suburb. It is not 'warehouse land' such as the entertainment zone proposed by Council near Sydenham Station, but the premises are surrounded by local residential houses on all four sides. Agar street, Wymess Street, Addison Road, Illawarra Road and Shepherd Street are all residential.

Interestingly a large number of the supporters of the application above seem personally familiar with who they call "Ash" , the applicant, and are very knowledgeable about the considerate nature of the applicant, which seems to indicate that they were asked by the proprietors to support the venue, whether these responders are bona fide local residents or not. It might be worthwhile to check whether these supporter are rent-a-crowd rather than real residents of the area around 107 Addison Rd.

I am not a recent resident NIMBY complainer who wants to shut down live music venues (along the lines of what happened to the Newtown Social Club/Sandringham Hotel), but have lived here in this street with my family for thirty years. As a working musician and as a resident of Shepherd Street I very much would welcome new live music venues, but this inappropriate Techno -DJ dance club proposal in what is a restaurant/cafe shopfront with no noise insulation has nothing to do with musicians, creative people and venues where music thrives. Instead it will attract a noisy party-lifestyle clientele which can't party in Sydney's lock-out zone and is looking for a high-profile street frontage.
Parking is already a major problem in the area. Shepherd Street and all local streets such as Wymess, Agar St. etc. have next to no parking left as it is. To state that public transport is nearby is dishonest, since buses are rarely used by any of the patrons of other nearby restaurants already. After midnight even less clients will use buses.
I oppose this "amplified DJ-music with below 200 Hertz frequencies" application because these frequencies travel much further than musical frequencies which occur when live bands play. The thumping techno beats penetrate walls and even sound insulations to a much hi gher degree. My attic bedroom has a line of sight to where the proposed venue will be. This will greatly affect my family's quality of life. I urge council to oppose this application.

  67. Monica commented

I fully support this application. Having lived in Marrickville for 5 years, I have watched it change. There needs to be more vibrant spaces in the area to cater for the residents. Walking to Illawarra Rd, Enmore, or catching the train to Newtown for a decent licensed cafe is not good enough. Marrickville is a large and diverse suburb and I believe having a welcoming space that acts a hub for the community is just what this suburb needs.

  68. Jules commented

I am entirely opposed to this development.
The noise from this proposed development would make life for all of those living in this block insufferable and cause no end of disruption for residents in Agar and Wemyss Streets in the form of noise, parking and late night revellers leaving the venue. Sound carries, especially at night. The owners of the large old theatre block held a party some years ago in the outdoor courtyard, with about 40 people in a marquee and the noise levels were staggering.

It's great that our area is being developed but bringing a nightclub style venue into a residential area is entirely unsuitable. The long term residents and ratepayers really should be considered and some serious restrictions placed on this proposal. Venues such as Barzaari and 2204 have greatly enhanced the area and similar developments are welcome. This proposed courtyard will face out onto the front bedrooms of numerous locals who are not at all happy about it.

This venue is also proposing to cater to 100 patrons. Even if half of these park that is an extra 50 cars onto our already crowded streets and a lot of noise as they depart at midnight. I know that there are a number of elderly and disabled residents in the Addison Road end of Agar Street who are very stressed and unhappy about this but don't have online access to do anything.

  69. Mitch T.B. commented

I fully support this application. Big business and property developers are in bed with government and lock out laws are diluting Sydney's character and personality. Sydney is not a retirement village and the influx of greater numbers of people heading to Newtown has affected the safety of many marginalised groups to exercise their right to be fully human and have fun in a way that is respectful and inclusive of diversity. Marrickville is changing and this proposal is indicative of this advent and presents an amazing opportunity to push for a more interesting, fun and diverse Inner West.

  70. Will commented

Absolutely in support of this development. Addison Rd and Marrickville would benefit massively from the presence of another safe small bar/intimate entertainment venue. As has been pointed out by other comments nearby Barzaari has recently been trading as a small bar until midnight to great success. The new cafe has already been hugely successful for the area during daylight trading and I see no reason why this could not also be the case during the evenings.

I believe people's fears about the development turning into some kings cross style nightclub are unfounded and they obviously don't realise that opening a venue like that involves conforming to many more regulatory requirements than simply lodging a successful DA for later hours.

  71. Jemma commented

I am a closeby Marrickville resident and am fully support this application. The opening hours are completely reasonable in respect to residents surrounding District. This would be an extremely important addition to Marrickville's vibrant and accepting culture and entertainment as it's in need of more late night options. I would like to support more applications in my area like this.

There are nearby venues such as Vic on The Park, Henson and most recently Barzaari that operate with amplified music with the same proposed operating hours as District. District has a much smaller capacity and thus there should be no issue granting this application. It's important to welcome new options in this area.

  72. Jules commented

Having already commented against this proposal I have done further research and it seems that most of the comments FOR this development are from friends and associates of the person proposing it and who will not be living next to it. Whilst I appreciate their need for a community space they need to be aware that they have helicoptered into an already strong and existing community of elderly residents and families with young children. I have lived here for over 20 years and have seen my community grow and prosper. Most residents were delighted to see another business and community coming into the area and taking over and developing a restaurant space that had closed. It now seems however that a completely different agenda was already in place with this "techno nightclub" venue and "new red-light district" already being advertised as a done deal on Facebook and in and around the inner west. Residents here are welcoming and open to turning our community into a vibrant and thriving place for everyone. Consideration for existing residents however and the existing community is paramount and this development has absolutely no thought or consideration for it's neighbours. Please council - don't let us down. We seem to be currently being preyed upon by every opportunistic developer who has suddenly got their sharp eyes on our community streets.

  73. Kelly commented

I strongly oppose this application. I live very close by on Addison road and there is already very loud music heard until 12am on Sunday nights. There is also no way to control noise of an outdoor courtyard area for 60 patrons.

  74. Brian Walker-Caychpole commented

Totally support this proposal. Will add to the vibrancy of the local community, will provide economic benefits and will add a unique nuance to the Marrickville area.

  75. Caro commented

I fully support this application. Ash is a responsible operator and her new venue will contribute to the culture and vibrancy of the neighbourhood.

  76. Jonny H commented

I live directly across the road and frankly, cannot wait for this to go through! It'll be great - the life this little cafe has already brought into the area has been wonderful.

Let them open until 12am, so long as the party stays inside, but I think the team are smart and respectful enough to have the best interests of the local community at heart.

Good on you guys. We need you in this area - it's been a weekday dead zone after 4PM - looking forward to the change.

  77. Hannah McGrath commented

I absolutely support this, another hopefully exciting venue to add to the culture that is Marrickville. My husband and I love supporting our community and this place only adds to us staying local.

  78. Dylan commented

I absolutely support this application and the creation of a safe space for the queer community to socialise in. Although movingly from the inner west to Bronte two years ago I still travel back to Satellite due to the sense of community and connections the space has created. Personally, i hate techno music however love the vibe the team has worked hard to create and I don't see this proposed space being any different. I hope council can remove emotion from decision making in this situation. Satellite is as residential as it gets and the business has a proven track record of respecting its neighbours.

  79. Callum commented

I also support this application for the entended hours that would allow this space to add yet another layer to the vibrant and diverse culture that is Marrickville. Paying respect to the long term neigbours is of course very important, some of which have seen Marrickville change over decades. Allowing energetic, community minded people to create new spaces for culture is how a city grows, and right now this city needs all the help it can get. I believe with simple things like acoustic insulation and quiet departures a happy medium could be met.

  80. H commented

Regarding the above comment from Dylan, I don't think any of us in the community would have a problem if this were a cafe run in the same way as satellite, with daytime hours. I don't believe satellite is open til midnight with DJs and is entirely appropriate for the neighbourhood in which it is located.

  81. T commented

I am in full support of this application. This venue will contribute so much to the culture of marrickville and is a very important addition to the largely diminished sydney nightlife.

  82. Ben Grant commented

I support this proposal. This applicantion exhibits the drive that our Inner West community should be fostering and encouraging. Young people are the future and Council can play a vital role in supporting their initiative managing the change that enterprises like this will bring. Please be calm and brave and offer this venture tge support needed to flourish.

  83. Melissa McKenzie commented

Having dealt with the proprietor in a professional capacity, I have found her to be both fair and consistent. I am confident that any expansion to the scope of her existing business would be done with the best interest of the community in mind. Additionally, having visited both or her current venues, I feel that any modifications made to the space will be done to a very high standard and will help to bring more trade to the area. This can only be seen as a positive and will most likely encourage other local businesses to "lift their game" and bring new ideas to the table.

On a more personal note, as a resident of the Inner West and a frequent visitor to Newtown/Enmore/Marrickville, I support the creation of late night venues that will help reinvigorate this area of Sydney. There is a notable lack of places to relax and unwind with friends that aren't deep in the heart of the CBD or in the tourist trap that is Darling Harbour/Circular Quay. A local venue, managed by and staffed by locals, is exactly what we need to ensure that the Marrickville council area continues to thrive.

  86. Matthew Cunningham commented

    I support this so much
Knowing how Ash Houghton runs her cafes I know she will be an amazing addition to the amazing community on Addison road

  87. Johnny commented

    I fully support this application.

This sounds like an exciting addition to Addison Rd, and for someone passionate about music and culture I am encouraging of new bars and venues opening in the neighbourhood.

Particularly on Addison Rd, where it really could use a late opening venue, aside from restaurants Thai Power and Barzaari.

Contrary to some commenters, I trust the operators of 107 Addison (who I have zero relationship with) will be responsible with its operation and particularly about nearby residents when it comes to noise. A comparable venue is Cake Wines, a Redfern bar running for more than a year now, which has amplified music (yes, even *gasp* techno!)

Still, it responsibly manages its venue in consideration of its neighbours, which are mostly high-density apartment blocks.

With that said, some of these comments regarding the venue being a "techno DJ nightclub" sound like exaggeration. I go past the space nearly every day and it does not appear large enough for a nightclub-type venue, as well as the 12am closing time being a deterrent for those looking for one.

As per the Statement of Environmental Effects, Ash Houghton appears to have the appropriate nous in the running of two other venues to understand how 107 Addison can serve the local community and the burgeoning independent arts scene in Marrickville.

I say give it a chance.

  88. Kaitlyn P commented

I completely support this proposition. I think it's of crucial importance that small businesses like District get the opportunity to develop and flourish in order for inner west Sydney to maintain its culture and continue to be recognised world wide as a safe, inclusive area for the lgbtqi community.

  89. Marcel Tabuteau commented

    I fully support this application.
With the gentrification of Newtown over the last 10 years and the lockouts bringing more people there from other communities who are looking mainly to drink and get drunk, the safe, open spaces we once had are slowly diminishing it seems. We need to nurture and help thrive those spaces, and this sounds like one. Ash's space in Newtown is beautifully diverse and supportive and I could think of no better group of people to open a fun vibrant later night venue in marrickville. This can only be seen as a good thing, if sound was a major issue for you, you wouldn't have moved to marrickville I don't think

  90. Rebecca Whittington commented

I support the business owner who has made this application. She has proven to be community minded, respectful of people (particularly neighbours) and supportive of local artists. Additionally - there is always a room for cultural and community growth in the Inner West.

  91. Trudy commented

PLEASE approve this application. I live in Lewisham, and there are no vibrant, interesting of cultural places within walking distance. This place will only help to bridge that gap and bring some liveliness to the area.

  92. NC commented

I wholeheartedly support this initiative. I've been a resident of the inner west for a decade now, and have frequented all of Ash's venues. Each one is unique, and makes an important contribution to the social life in the area.

Each of Ash's cafes are important community hubs as they are diverse, creative and inclusive, and provide employment opportunities for locals. Ash is known for supporting local businesses by stocking her supplies from them, purchasing art for her cafes (all her cafes are absolutely gorgeous and packed with local art), and i'm excited to see that she's opening up another opportunity for local community by hiring DJs to play for her public.

On the matter of DJs, I'd like to note that the place isn't intended to be a nightclub at all. Amplified music is no different to playing music in any small venue/space. It will simply allow the venue to connect a laptop to a mixer, then into the speakers, as every other venue, day or night trade, does. And a DJ will play tailored tunes for the venue. Indeed, the venue does not intend to have DJs 5 nights per week. But this proposal is about the option to have a DJ play on any given night whether it be a Saturday or a Wednesday. Again, the music will be no louder than plugging a laptop into speakers, but it provides an exciting employment opportunity to locals and a fresh new venue.

At a time when so many small venues around Sydney are shutting down, especially music venues, giving a platform for locals play their music would provide a unique space in Marrickville for local residents and performers to develop their art.

Those living in the inner west, especially Newtown, will know that there are significant increases in homophobic and transphobic violence. Our venues in Newtown are becoming increasingly unsafe for the community to go to, because of the influx of violent partygoers who are locked out from Kings Cross and city venues. To my neighbours in the inner west, you know how important it is that locals have somewhere safe to go to, as a cafe and bar to have a few drinks without the fear of being harassed or assaulted (as happens in the city, as is increasingly happening in Newtown). Ash's venue will give locals somewhere to go for local entertainment throughout the week but without the need to drink a lot of alcohol as with the local hotels and big pubs that are taking over. The inner west deserves a local community space where we can feel safe, feel at home at. Those of you who visited Ash's other cafes will know that the quality of food, drink, and service always are excellent. The places are inclusive and friendly. This is just what the inner west needs, just what Marrickville needs.

This is an incredibly groovy and funky initiative, I am excited!

  93. Drew Rooke commented

I fully support this proposal. If approved, it will help Addison Road - a hugely under utilised area - grow into a more vibrant, creative precinct. It will offer locals an alternative to nearby pubs, the Vic on the Park and the Henson, both of which are great venues but do not necessarily appeal to all who live in the area. Any great suburb is diverse and should have several types of venues available for people of all demographics to enjoy - cafes, restaurants, pubs AND small bars.

Arguments that this proposal will cause the area to transform into a Kings Cross-type area are specious and reflect an ignorance of the fact that there is a very large cohort of adults who simply enjoy having one or two drinks with friends in a nice venue with nice music before quietly heading home.

Equally problematic is the argument that this development will cause increasing traffic along Addison Rd. As it would be a bar where alcohol is served, and as it would cater mainly to the local community, I highly doubt patrons would risk breaking the law or wasting their petrol by driving there.

  94. Emerald commented

I fully support this proposal, the cafe is situated in an area which is very much in need for smaller, more intimate venues for music. Given the growing interest in Newtown as a location for musicians to perform (since the number of venues in Sydney have shrunk so dramatically), proposals like this are needed now. This proposal presents the opportunity for current and new generations of Sydney musicians to practice and perform their craft, which is currently under unduly pressure from ill-thought through legislation.

I've been a regular at Ms Houghton's cafes around the inner west for many years and I too wholeheartedly support this addition to Addison Road. The area needs this and Ash is the perfect person to be leading with this proposal to bring more vibrancy to the Enmore side of Marrickville.

Being a resident of the inner west, I believe that the proposed hours of operation are also very reasonable.

  100. Claire commented

    I fully support this appliaction
This is not some inconsiderate developer looking to exploit an opportunity at the expense of locals, this is a member of a diverse community looking to create a safe and much needed space in an area that needs it.

I live on Agar Street and have lived there for a decade. It is a fantastic vibrant area that is also family friendly! It is great that Addison road is having new businesses. I have no objections to 107 Addison rd it as a cafe or a low key bar. But the extended opening hours do concern me, as does the outdoor courtyard and the amplified music.

I live quite close to the site and know that noise carries surprisingly well up Agar street. Because of this I do not feel the application for amplified music is suitable for this environment. There are other areas that are far better suited for a venue with amplified music and extended opening hours where local residents will not be negatively impacted. Areas such as the Sydenham precinct should be looked at for venues with extended hours and amplified music (or even some sections of Marrickville road). The Addison road section where the cafe is located is too close to residential areas for it to operate as a late night venue with amplified music.

There seems to be a misconception that because we are in a 'high aircraft traffic' area that normal residential noise levels should not apply. In reality this makes the ever diminishing moments of peace and low noise a precious commodity. One that is especially worth fighting for.

Finally, contrary to what some people have implied, Addison road is not the slum that desperately needs to lift its game! There are small businesses that have been serving the local community for decades. They may not have the mandatory "make over" facade, but they are a long standing, unique and vital part of the community (Cleopatras Laundry, George and his fruit shop, The News Agency, The barber and the corner store).
Progress does not mean destroying history but should be about moving forward whilst preserving the unique characteristics of a site.
There are already businesses that are doing a great job invigorating the street in a harmonious way, without a heavy hand. Businesses such as 2204, Glow worm, Thai power, Barzaari are all changing the street but in a positive way that maintains the delicate balance between commercial interests and maintaining the quality of life in this densely populated residential area.
I urge the counsellors to look at this issue on face value and not be swayed by a savvy well organised social media campaign.

I wholeheartededly support this application. It would be great to have something local and fun to go to. Amplified music? Wow, the overhead planes are much louder than this and fly over at very late hours.
As for the crowd this will attract? We are a very respectful and caring group of people who are very likely to frequent this place.
No history will be destroyed by this place at all. This will add to the vibrancy and character of Addison Road.
As for traffic and parking? I will be able to walk safely there as I live very close.
Bring it on. I look forward to it.

I think Council should consider the following when reviewing comments from the Planning Alerts website.

The bulk of those in favour appear to the result of a social media campaign by the applicant and very few appear to live in the area. There are people who claim to live “right next door” yet aren’t known by local residents. These comments don’t refer to the substance of the proposal and have little or no understanding of its context, the neighbourhood, or planning guidelines.

It’s also clear from numerous statements by those who support the application that the venue will operate as a bar with live music (while the application purports to be a minor modification to a café/restaurant). The application for 100 patrons also puts this far beyond the scope/definition of a small bar (60 patrons).

Many supporters ask Council to provide consent based on their faith that the applicant will work through issues with local residents (which isn’t shared by many of those who have objected). It’s important to remember that consent is given to a site (not an individual) and that, even if the applicant were to somehow reconcile running a bar with live music in the middle of a residential area, an inappropriate consent would transfer to any future occupants of the site as well.

As a resident of the Inner West, I'm super excited to support this development! I previously lived just around the corner on Horton St and now I'm up in Stanmore. I've been frequenting Ash's cafe in Newtown for some time and already popped in to enjoy the atmosphere at District. I think it will be a fantastic addition to the area. As for the 'amplified music' being complained about, I'm guessing these people haven't been to Satellite or District yet. Personally, I take my laptop and I go there to work so if the music was as hectic as they claim, I would not be able to do that now, would I? I've seen how Ash interacts with customers and I see the genuine and mutual respect on both sides. I moved to the Inner West from the Western suburbs over 20 years ago and it was precisely for spaces like this. It's spaces like this that make the Inner West what it is.

I fully support this application. As a longtime resident of Marrickville it would be great to have more opportunities to socialise with friends in a small venue and listen to music. I feel that later opening hours would be of great benefit to the neighbourhood and the community.

As a local resident, I support this application and am excited at the prospect of this welcome addition to Marrickville. Unlike some other respondents, I believe that diversity in community brings vibrancy. Young families, cafes, long-time residents, elder homeowners, bars, businesses, and small-music venues can co-exist and do so very successfully in other suburbs I’ve previously resided. It would be very short-sighted of Council to deny this application and the cultural-value it would bring to the Addison Rd and the wider Marrickville community.

I 100% support this DA- Marrickville has a serious lack of options when it comes to nightlife and has nothing for the LGBTIQ community, despite the high proportion of queers living in the area. Marrickville needs this! Satellite is a tremendous boon to Newtown- more than just a cafe, it is a hub for community events and bringing people together- no doubt District can fill a similar iconic role in Marrickville. I doubt any of the people complaining about amplified music have ever been to Satellite and heard the level that's being proposed.

In response to the reply to my earlier comment -thanks Captain obvious -i am aware of the premise of this application and how it differs from that of a cafe. The more important point is the care, consideration and respect towards neighbours with which the owners of Satelite have demonstrated in what is a high density residential area in Newtown.

I really hope council sticks to the facts and doesn't not get swept away by what reads as a well organised campaign agsinst this much needed development orchestrated such by "locals"
