    This application should be refused.
Commercial units provide a much greater sense of space and openness. Residential units remove that sense, as privacy is sought for the internal spaces thereby decreasing the amenity to the public.
This site has already been massivly over developed for residential purposes and the conversion of two retail units to residential use will exacerbate the already over stretched availability of parking as commercial use parking happens at a different time of the day to residents parking.
Finally, the local residents are absolutely at their wits end with the ongoing inconvenience this development, or should I say overdevelopment, has caused and enough is enough.

I agree with the comment that this application should be refused. This location is an important one which was designed to retain its commercial strip feel. It provides a commercial linkage with the shopfronts and cafes further down Darling Street, to the main restaurant strip near Gladstone Park. Balmain requires innovation in retail and restauranting, not more residential along this strip which has broad newly tiled pathways perfect for attracting customers. It is a long walk to the wharf and most buses stop at Gladstone Park. To promote pedestrian interest in walking the extra kilometre and a half, as many shopfronts as possible along Darling Street should be retained. This development has only just been completed and to see this amendment emerge so quickly seems opportune on behalf of the developer. It is also worth pointing out that this location sits on the corner of two streets and therefore has plenty of vehicle access. The idea a commercial lease would have no takers is a nonsense.
