I believe this location should be leased as the current Eating House and Shop and NOT change to Carwash (Unlisted Use) and Associated Car Parking. Here are my reasons.

    1. The location is diagonally opposite a school and directly opposite a day care centre and allowing the change to carwash would increase traffic down Scarborough beach road when it is already fairly clogged during peak hours.

    2. There are already several car wash businesses on Charles street, approximately 1km from the proposed Scarborough Beach Road site.

    3. I feel that a carwash on this site would not fit in with the vibrancy and flair of what the council has promoted the Scarborough Beach Road "strip" of Mount Hawthorn to be.

    4. A carwash is an anti-social business, again not fitting with the vibrancy of the area.

  2. Ross commented

I think it should remain as an eating house. Look at Chinta further down Scarborough Beach Road in North Perth for what can happen when someone with vision and passion get's hold of one of these old servo sites - It's making a much more useful contribution to the community than a car wash would. Don't change the use, get creative and do something that the community will value and thank you for!

  3. Belinda Davies commented

I too believe this location should stay as an eating house.
As mentioned before there are already car wash locations on Charles street and there is also one on Scarborough Beach Road in Osborne park. What ever happened to people washing their car at home with a bucket and sponge?
I think the last thing Mount Hawthorn needs is a car wash especially as it across from a day care centre and the local primary school.
I truly believe if the community as a whole was aware of this proposal nearly all would be opposed.
    Thank you.

  4. Paula Petchell commented

I, too, am concerned with the proposal to turn this site into a car wash. Given the large number of young children using the roads in this area, with a daycare centre and primary school in extremely close proximity, I believe adding more traffic to an already busy Scarborough Beach Road would be unwise.

An eating house certainly sits better within the Mount Hawthorn ethos and is much more suited to a family centred community. I believe that the majority of Mount Hawthorn residents would oppose this proposal.

  5. Natasha commented

Having kids at MHPS, I already experience the limited spaces available to park for day care or primary school pick ups and drops off. I think the carwash would add even more pressure to this limited capacity and also increase traffic in an already very busy street.

To me the car wash does not meet the brief of creating a community feeling and vibrancy on the Scarborough beach road "strip". Having experienced Chinta several times, I believe that something similar could be created down this end of Scarborough Beach Road and give an eatery option for Braithwaite and Menzies park visitors.

I don't feel a car wash adds anything of substance to Mount Hawthorn and feel it is in contradiction to the proposed bike road to increase bike use and discourage people using cars.
    Thank you

  6. Aaron Petchell commented

I oppose the setup of a car wash here. It is opposite a childcare and school and doesnt fit with a community need to encouraging vehicle based traffic. That is better suited to remain towards Osborne Park area of scarborough beach road.

    Thank you.

  7. Karen Sheilds commented

I am also opposed to the site becoming a carwash. The proposed location is too close to the Mount Hawthorn Primary School and childcare centre. I have recently been involved in implementing traffic related solutions surrounding the Mount Hawthorn Primary School. Many parents have expressed concerns over the existing significant traffic issues on Scarborough Beach Road - including but not limited to the speed of traffic, congestion of traffic, and near miss accidents.

I believe that a carwash in this location would attract cars into the general area and would add to the existing issues as described in the above paragraph. I believe an increase in traffic on Scarborough Beach road would only take away from our aim to become a cycle/bike friendly, pedestrian friendly community, and generally greener place to live.

I would support a family friendly walk-in café or small bar for this location.

    Thank you

  8. Lis commented

I agree with all the previous comments posted to date. Please don't allow the opening of a car wash in this location that is so close to a school and childcare centre.

As described by The Mount Hawthorn Hub, this location is part of "one of Perth’s most evolving strips". I do not believe that the addition of a carwash to the strip fits with the brief of "bring(ing) together residents and businesses who want to maintain the unique identity of Mount Hawthorn and make it a welcoming place". Mount Hawthorn IS unique, and it is a wonderful community. Please let's all keep it that way!

There is a carwash further up scarborough beach road on the corner of Angove street, and another on Wanneroo road. Each of these carwashes is located more suitably, and provide locals with choice as to where they can wash their cars.

  9. Tracy commented

I also disagree with the proposal to turn this site into a car wash. Because of its proximity to Mt Hawthorn Primary School and the daycare centre, there is a lot of pedestrian traffic in this area and increasing the number of cars - both on the road and crossing footpaths to enter a car wash - sounds disastrous. Why take the step forward of installing bike lanes along Scarborough Beach Rd, only to take these two steps back again?

As previous people have suggested, I would support an eating establishment that caters more to foot and cycle traffic than cars. A carwash doesn't fit with the, "community", "village" feel that is being promoted for Mt Hawthorn and there are surely much more appropriate locations for such a business.

    Thank you.

  10. Susanna commented

I too am opposed to this plan. There is very little need for another car wash, as has been mentioned. When this site was an eatery and cafe, it added atmosphere and a valued service to this end of Scarb Beach Rd. We have been keenly awaiting a new cafe/eating establishment to open and the idea that it might be a car wash is so disappointing. It does not fit with the community-minded approach of the suburb, in my view.

  11. Amanda commented

For all the reasons mentioned above, I too oppose the proposal to locate a car wash in the area.

Mount hawthorn is well known for its village type lifestyle and this site would be much better suited to a FAMILY FRIENDLY eating house.

Thanks for providing an opportunity for those living in mount hawthorn to have a voice on this proposal.

    Kind regards

  12. Stephen commented

Another carwash. Really? The multitude of car washes in the vicinity are not enough? In an area so close to a school and a daycare that already struggles for parking. In a suburb full of children who are happy to wash their parents cars for pocket money. On a location that would ideally suit an eating house, cafe, a gourmet deli, a small bar or a unique retail store.

  13. Karen Kerlin commented

I am opposed to the site become a car wash for the reasons outlined below:

The school is already very busy and it is a challenge to find parking.

There is a carwash on Scarb Beach Road within approx 2 kms near the MdDonalds at Charles Street.

The type of business does not resonate with the location.

  14. Lorraine Y Barrie commented

Thank you for the opportunity to comment. Similar to the other comments I am also opposed to having a car wash in such close proximity to MHPS and child care centre. Scarborough Beach Road is a very high traffic area and this proposal would unwisely add to this. I believe the car wash is better suited to the Osborne Park area which has a strong commercial and business focus. Let's bring something into the neighbourhood which we can all feel proud about and be willing to support with our patronage.

  15. Carolyn commented

I too disagree with the proposal to turn this space into a car wash.

I believe that an amenity which, if it's to be successful, would attract significantly more vehicles into this area, would not be a suitable option.

So much consideration and effort has been directed at traffic calming measures around the school and the neighbourhood. Its proximity to the local primary school and day-care centre, where foot-traffic is already high, does not seem like the best location for such a service.

    Thank you.

  16. Jamie von Nida commented

Whilst I am all for business development in Mount Hawthorn, I am opposed to this application as I do not think it will help the current traffic problems that we are trying to address at the Mount Hawthorn Primary School and the Child Care Centre.
In addition I do not think that this type of business is suitable for this location and would be better in a more industrial/ commercial area rather than the residential area in which it is being proposed.

  17. John commented

I believe this site is quite inappropriate for a car wash for the following reasons:
*Too close to a primary school with children often walking to school.
    * Heavy peak hour traffic which increases traffic congestion in this area.
    * This part of the neighbourhood requires extra food/beverage venues to extend the Mount Hawthorn vibe.
    Thank you

  18. Sarah commented

I do not believe that a Car Wash in this location would be of benefit to the community and would only lead to more traffic congestion and safety concerns around the local Primary School.

  19. Claudia commented

As a Mount Hawthorn resident I am greatly concerned of the car wash proposal at the location - it is located too close to a Day care centre and Primary school increasing risk to young children and families with the additional vehicles and traffic.

  20. Monique Kinnear commented

I am a resident of Buxton street and wish the site to remain an eating house.

There are a number of car washes in the area and feel we don't need another.

Mt hawthorn lacks decent fruit and veg, gourmet deli retailers. Buxton street end needs more vibrancy and will compliment the Jazz cellar.

  21. Liz Dorrington commented

I oppose the opening of a car wash at 211 Scarborough Beach Rd. There"s enough congestion close to the primary school & traffic issues as there is. It will encourage anti social behaviour . Keep with the community spirt of Mt Hawthorn & open a family friendly eating place or something that will benefit the community/ public.

  22. Paul Dorrington commented

    I Paul Dorrington
Oppose the opening of a New Car Wash At 211 Scarborough Beach Road Mount Hawthorn.
With the amount of Traffic Congestion this business would cause to the nearby Primary School and danger of antisocial behaviour. This space should be turned into either a cafe or restaurant as it has a prime location to do so.
As a Chef, I see that the owner of the land would add to community and local business that surround, bringing in a greater family environment.
With 34 years in the industry I would be happy to offer my services to the owner if he/she would like to pursue this Avenue.

  23. Holly Simpson commented

I too am opposed to this site being used as a car wash. I can think of at least 4 other similar car wash businesses all within a 2-3km radius of this site, does the area really need more? The proposed business does not fit the identity of our community. It would be a waste of a prime location that could be put to much better use.

Keeping the site as a cafe/eatery is much better suited to the area, one catering to families would be ideal (especially those with young children given the multitude of them in the area).

  24. Tracey S commented

I am a local resident (within a few hundred metres of the proposed carwash location). Traffic on Scarborough Beach Road already faces significant challenges exiting Killarney St in terms of visibility due to number of vehicles and amount of pedestrian traffic in the immediate vicinity. Adding additional vehicles in a car wash setting is likely to exacerbate this. Given that other businesses in the vicinity are more focused on clothing and food, I feel this is an inappropriate location, especially given that there are other car wash options nearby on Charles St.

  25. Marlene Kornides commented

I oppose the opening of a car wash. There seems to be many car washes popping up along Scarborough Beach Road. Is there a tax advantage to a car wash business?

I support a cafe, a veggie shop, a coffee shop. Aplace where people can come together by foot or by bike and meet. No more cars!

  26. Narelle commented

I too am opposed to this site being used as a car wash. It would not be of benefit to the community and I believe it would lead to more traffic congestion and safety concerns given it's close proximity to the Mount Hawthorn Primary School.

  27. Katherine Richardson commented

I oppose the change of use to a car wash due to traffic concerns, and make particular note of the site's location on a corner t-junction; the nearby bus stops with significant foot traffic of high school children from age 11 (year 7), as well as the significant foot and cycle traffic for the primary school and day care centre already mentioned.

  28. Marnie Chellew commented

I oppose the change of use of this site to a car wash. This is already a congested area due to the single lanes of Scarborough Beach Road and the intersection has both a primary school and day care centre on the corners. This would increase car traffic in an area where there is considerable foot traffic and children crossing.

There are multiple car wash alternatives in the area and an eating house/shop is more fitting to the surrounding suburban area.

  29. Sarah Maiden commented

I am greatly concerned by the application to convert this site to a car wash, as I believe it will significantly increase traffic to this area. This goes directly against local efforts to 'green' Mount Hawthorn & promote more sustainable living initiatives including ways to reduce our water consumption & use of cars.
With 3 young children (under 6 years) I am particularly concerned with the increased Safety risks associated with more traffic along this section of Scarborough Beach Road, which is very close to Mt Hawthorn Primary School.
For these reasons I am opposed to the application for the site to be used as a car wash. Thankyou for your consideration.

  30. Trudi Benger commented

I am a Buxton Street Resident, as well as a Parent of children who attend Mt Hawthorn Primary School. On both accounts I strongly object to have a car wash at the proposed site.

    1. Buxton Street is highly populated with children and we already have concerns about the amount of traffic using our street from Anzac Road to Scarborough Beach Road and the daycare which is situated on the opposite corner.

    2. Parking is already an issue between current shops, the daycare, school and housing. Again making the Buxton Street / Scarborough Beach Rd intersection difficult best.

I am happy for a business to operate on this site, but believe a car wash would create too many safety risks.

  31. Alex commented

I agree with the comments stated above - I am opposed to this change of use application and believe the site is much better suited to its current use of Eating House.

I am a Buxton St resident and parent at Mt Hawthorn Primary School. We already have considerable issues with traffic and parking around the primary school and day care centre and believe this would exacerbate the situation. There are sufficient car wash businesses in the vicinity, and this type of business does not fit the urban village atmosphere of the main strip of Mount Hawthorn.

An eating house would enhance this end of Scarborough Beach Road and be a much better fit for the location.

  32. Linda commented

I too oppose the application of this site being converted into a car wash! Recently we enjoyed the likes of Bike Week, Walk To School Day and are continuously encouraged to use other means of transport to get to school, other than driving. With the application of a car wash, it seems quite obvious what will become if it is accepted. With over 700 students attending the school, would it be fair to say safety comes first?
The car wash on Scarborough Beach Road & Charles St has ample space to accommodate an influx of cars as well, across the road beside McDonalds, another car was is available. We need to ask ourselves, is it really necessary for the City of Vincent to house more car washes or build more schools? Safety first.

  33. Matthew Townsend commented

I would like to voice mine and my families objection to the proposed change of use at 221 Scarborough Beach Road, Mount Hawthorn. As per previous objections, alternative uses in line with the vibrant residential and community feel Mount Hawthorn is striving for would be far more beneficial to the area. With numerous car washes in more appropriate commercial retail locations such as Osborne Park, all within 5 minutes drive the need for such a facility is also unwarranted. I urge the council to simply attend the location on any school morning or afternoon to see why the local community has such an objection to this proposal. At the very least, hopefully the firm objections raised generate councils desire for further community consultation before any approval is given. Thank you. Matt

  34. Tash commented

I agree with the above comments & also object to this site being changed to a car wash & believe it should stay as a cafe/eating house. This end of Scarborough Beach Road needs to be developed but not with a car wash. It is located too close to the Primary school & daycare, both of which already have limited parking. Increased vehicle traffic will make matters worse & potentially put young lives at risk. This is a family friendly area that needs a vibrant family friendly business.

  35. Anne commented

Thank you for the opportunity to comment.
I too oppose the application of this site (211 Scarborough Beach Rd MH) being converted into a car wash! Not Necessary!
I would encourage a business to compliment the existing business at this already busy intersection... (Jazz Cellar, Salvation Army Store, Child Care, Florist, Deli, Physio, Restaurant-take Away, Hairdresser etc etc)
Thank you for your thoughtful consideration of your COV local families who would like to enhance the vibrant residential and community feel of Mt. Hawthorn.
    Kind Regards
    Anne

  36. Lisa Gleeson commented

Thank you for making this opportunity to comment available.
As a resident of 20 years, who encourages my children to walk to school, I too oppose the Scarborough Beach Rd site becoming a soulless, industrial business.
We, as a community, have worked hard to calm our local streets and remind non-locals to take care. Why then encourage more cars into the area with a car wash?
Within a radius of 1-2 blocks from this proposed site we currently have:
-speed humps on Scarbrorough Beach, Matlock, Egina, Federation and Tasman Sts
    -a 40km school zone
-a signposted blackspot area on cnr Egina&Berriman
-hundreds of children encouraged to walk and cycle to and from school
-heavy traffic and parking problems around the school and daycare across the road
-a designated bike lane encouraging cycling
-a local deli kids frequent after school (requiring them to cross the site in question!)
-and a whole lot of locals who all seem to be in agreement that a car washing business does not belong in our neighbourhood.
Please do not approve anything that would potentially threaten the safety and community feel we are blessed with in "The Hawthorn Hub".

  37. Jonson commented

I am also opposed to a car wash, or similar business, in this location. Such an enterprise does not fit with the family-friendly characteristics of Mount Hawthorn. The variety of drink/eat options that can be created in such a location is significant and will make a valuable contribution to the local area. Mount Hawthorn is a strong family community with a vibrant primary school, wonderful collection of shops, and local amenities that serve the needs of families. A business in that location should add value to this community, particularly to that section of Scarborough Beach Road.

A car wash is limited in the value it can add to the community of Mount Hawthorn, it is limited in its variety of services to the community, has the potential to contribute to reduced traffic flow in the area (daycare centre and large primary school within 100m). Further, there are already multiple options for car washes nearby, as indicated in other comments.

Installing a car wash in that location would be to the detriment of the area, and would not be commensurate with the community of Mount Hawthorn.

  38. Fiona Bolger commented

I oppose the development of a car wash for the many reasons stated above by other community members. Primarily the proximity to MHPS (and a child care facility) along with the proposal being in conflict with Mt Hawthorn's aspirations of a developing urban cafe/dining community.
There are 3 car wash facilities within a 2.5km radius (Charles St) of the proposed site so surely our community is better placed with a different development which will best serve the locals.
    Thanks for your consideration.

  39. Louise Terry commented

    Hi
I agree with the previous comments. This is located opposite a school which caters for over 800 students and daycare. Parking is already a problem in the area. A business which involves cars driving through frequently will make the problems we already have more difficult.

  40. P. Fletcher commented

This is one of the problems associated with the agenda of high-density and infill housing, the occupants often do not even have a parking bay, let alone a tap, hose and space to wash their car at home. The car wash application is just a reaction to the poor planning approvals that create the need for such a facility, and no doubt the applicant can see a profit in it.

  41. Ian commented

Makes far more sense to be fitting with the community and stay as is
The car wash and associated traffic would be a hazard for the school across the road

  42. Jane Brazenor commented

This part of the street is already congested and an eating house that locals can walk to is a far better option than a car wash. It's difficult enough to find parking on the occasions when I need to use my car to pick up my kids from MHPS, we don't need more cars directed to this area.
