The Marrickville Heritage Society cannot support this application for partial demolition, extensions and alterations to this heritage listed property. The proposed works do nothing to enhance the 'conservation' of the heritage values as claimed in the Heritage Impact Statement - remaining original features of the house are to be removed and modified to achieve an extension that does nothing to enhance the remaining original Federation villa.
The interiors of the house are described as being intact and in good condition, but there are no photos of the interior of the house to support this. The construction of the new staircase will require the demolition of parts of the ceiling and walls in the most important room in the house, and there is no evaluation of what fabric will be removed to achieve this intervention.
The new French doors of the main elevation of the extension are incorrectly described as being sympathetic to the original windows and doors, when their contemporary proportions and composition are in fact strongly contrasting to the multipane double hung windows and panelled door of the original house.
The Society requests that Council not approve this proposed developement, until a more completely documented and sympathetic solution is proposed for this locally important heritage house.

It seems to me that Heritage Impact Statements accompanying development applications are frequently farcical. Too often they are prepared by people with a vested interest in the development such as, for instance, the architect of the proposed alterations or some friend of the party seeking to make the alterations. Such people have sham qualifications for writing Heritage Impact Statements and are, in any case, doing their best to see that the development is approved.

How is Council supposed to take into account any Heritage Impact Statements when so many of them are biased and often untruthful?
