5 Chester Terrace is a 1930s brick and tile cottage of great charm, situated in the historic part of Southport. Some of the remaining mature heritage cypress pine trees for which the area is noted grow on the property. Apparently 5 Chester Terrace was built and afterwards lived in by Horace Allen Bowler Dixon, son of TSS founder Rev Horace Dixon, and additions were done in the 1950s. Horace Dixon was a well known personality and also manager/foreman of Banham's Transport, Southport's first carrier (later taken over by Woods Transport and afterwards by TNT).
We have precious few of the old homes left and some very beautiful ones have already been demolished and replaced with extremely unremarkable apartment buildings.
It hasn't been demolished yet, so can this property be saved from destruction at this stage? It is quite criminal to unnecessarily obliterate the character and charm of a neighbourhood and especially one that represents Southport's earliest days. In years to come people will not thank a council that sells its heritage for profit.
