I am sad to see this proposal, as a long term resident of the area I feel the character and history of our streetscapes are changing at a dramatic pace with new builds, and increasing numbers of duplexes. 13 Arcadia Street is a large and attractive double brick house, with high ornate ceilings, a lovely outlook, and stands in good condition. The excellent character, brickwork and detailing, is a large part of what makes the housing in our area attractive. I write this after attending recent consultations about developments and talking to many neighbours. Others like me feel it is unfortunate that so many of our old houses, many now dating back a century are being knocked down, when they could be retained and extended. Demolishing this house, and houses like this will lose us streetscape heritage and history, and we need more of our houses like this to have Council protections in place so that at least the streetscape retains character. Also the number of duplexes will impact on deep soil planting areas, and we need to ensure that large trees and habitat trees (for native birds and animals) are planted in the stead of any that are removed. If the Council is committed to sustainable environmental outcomes we also need to consider the high carbon costs of demolishing and rebuilding when a perfectly good house is standing.
