Re 44 Repton Road East Malvern, 0070/19: I object that “The proposed additions at the rear of the house deliberately contrast with the old house.” The fact that they describe at great length how the front of the house is to be restored to the original design is starkly incongruous with what they are proposing in the back. Joining white brick to a timber house appears to be nothing more than a mechanism to build to the fence line, itself an imposition to neighbours to their north, in a block which is wide enough to be not needing to go to that extreme – it is not a single fronted block. And that neighbours should have to be looking at a second floor black cladding akin to a shipping container I find objectionable. This renovation appears to pay lip service to the heritage overlay without showing any genuine sensitivity to why there is a heritage overlay and what neighbours all around me with their back extensions have sensitively maintained for all of our benefit up to now. I challenge the notion that if you can’t see it from the street, that it doesn’t matter if an exterior materials used are in keeping with the rest of the exterior. It does matter to the residents of the street who, in overpowering 2 storey extensions have to be looking at something totally not in keeping with the rest of the neighbourhood. Tasteful renovations that keep the exterior surfaces in keeping with the houses and are not eyesores, whether from the street or from the rear, should be the goal in a street with a heritage overlay.
I do not understand Parking Objective Standard A9 complying in that “No change is proposed to existing off street parking.” The current set up clearly has space for several vehicles parked off street, and the proposed renovation does not. I am surrounded by neighbours on both sides of me and across the street from me who have either no off street parking or not enough off street parking for their multiple vehicles, and I frequently now don’t have street parking available in front of my house. I do not believe this notion that the renovation does not change the existing off street parking, and this renovation can’t but make on street parking even more difficult in the immediate surrounds.
We live in very narrow blocks on this street. It is disheartening that a proposed renovation in one of the wider blocks on the street includes the need to build to the fence line, in materials which are totally out of character with the street. It is an imposition on neighbours and shows insensitivity to maintaining the integrity of the heritage overlay. For these reasons I object to the proposed renovations.
