The original plan for the top floor was for entertainment. Now we have what is essentially a gambling den downstairs and a series of tiny rooms around shared bathrooms upstairs. So is the idea that you lose your house on the pokies downstairs and then get comped accom upstairs so you can keep gambling until there's nothing left?

This alteration provides no extra services to the community and abrogates the responsibility for the venue to provide anything but a space for people to gamble.

It’s a very small bar area compared to the very large gambling area.

Also, are you looking to encourage the keeping of visitors and tourists in, what is essentially, windowless boxes with limited facilities? It’s not really the image I picture for the Inner West.

"The publican of the current premises desires to re-establish the original and traditional pub activity and to re-establish the tourist and visitor accommodation component of a pub."
The proposed setup is nothing like the bucolic ideal the publican is feeding us - it is a cluster of cell-like burrows atop a mass of money-draining pokies. Where does he propose these guests will gather - in the one shared shower? Or one of the 3 toilet cubicles for the 15 rooms? The setup looks very much like a low cost boarding house, a pay-by-the-hour motel or a budget Airbnb for those hoping to party for the night. All these will have social impacts on the "SAL", the Marrickville Rd strip, and the broader area.

Is this actually going to be legit accommodation? I can't imagine who would want to stay in windowless, bathroomless boxes. Looks more like a brothel set up...

Surely this design is incompatible with Basix requirements? If Council approves this shoddy building it will be another step in the downward trend that is becoming apparent in Marrickville & Sydenham, cheap and nasty developments done for a quick buck, making for depressed streetscapes and future slums.

  6. Michelle commented

As others have said, I can’t see how this proposal is in line with BASIX requirements?

There’s no provision for additional parking for the overnight guests *who WILL have cars*

Is this gambling establishment in any way in line with Council’s adoption the Marrickville West Master Plan?

Sounds like a great idea! Support.

This should not be approved ! We do not need more poker machines in Marrickville. Bars, restaurants, cafes, live music venues yes, gaming machines NO !

Im not in favour of this development. Marrickville has already become a bottle neck most days of the week in peak times and the provision of parking doesn't exist. Parking on Marrickville Road, unlikely at any time for this hotel. Marrickville does not need 'a tourist hub' - it has a lively and active community and is not seen as a tourist location. Marrickville is not a gambling centre either. That is why billions of dollars was spent building the Star Casino and the Casino at Barangaroo. THAT is the gambling hub! People can go there to gamble their lives away.
The idea that 30 people plus would share 1 bathroom facility and 2 toilet facilities does not constitute accomodation.....it does sound more like a pay by the hour temporary accomodation.

I've been told there are EIGHT brothels in this shopping centre already.

Is there demand for a NINTH brothel?

  11. Devleena Ghosh commented

Please don't allow any more gambling premises. Don't we have enough people ruining their lives and their families? And the 'accommodation' is clearly very very short term; so either brothels or cheap air BNB. And no parking for 15 rooms in an area where parking is already a nightmare. You have a responsibility to improve our suburb not debase it.

I have many concerns about this operation....is it a pub? A bar? A gambling den? A boarding house?

I worry about the amount of antisocial behaviour that will be generated from such an establishment. I have no issues with bars/pubs but one that has a gambling area larger than the bar seating is very problematic. What about paring for all the 'tourists' who will be staying? Are there enough bathrooms? I could not see many in the plans outlined here: https://eproperty.marrickville.nsw.gov.au/eServices/P1/eTrack/eTrackApplicationDetails.aspx?r=MC.P1.WEBGUEST&f=%24P1.ETR.APPDET.VIW&ApplicationId=DA201800430

I do not support this application and would recommend a smaller gambling area and better facilities for the rooms upstairs inc ensuites.

  13. Natanya Davine commented

I have major concerns about the gaming area and lack of parking for those staying overnight. No concern at all if it's a bar or live music but this sounds like a brothel and gaming venue.

  14. Denise Moss commented

So disappointing I’m not in favour of this at all!

  15. Heather Davie commented

Marrickville does not need any more gambling areas and i do not believe that this development would be good for the Marrickville community.

The proposal for 15 rooms upstairs would not appear to comply with Floor space ratios, current building codes, BASIX requirements and Boarding House requirements so should not be approved.

Lack of onsite parking provision is also problematic as there is very little on street untimed parking in the area.

  16. Jessica Millar commented

The ratio of gaming space to actual bar space is concerning for me, especially given the amount of gaming venues that already exist in the area.

The accommodation upstairs doesn't seem to match the facility being proposed downstairs. If the publican actually wants to feed the local tourism industry by making hostel-like accommodation, then the pub downstairs should have more of a draw than just being a place to gamble.

  17. David Jones commented

I do not support this application, even given the limited information available since the plans are NOT accessible! This in itself could be legally challenged - we can't make informed decision if information is not provided, now can we.

This will turn into another brothel, I have not a single doubt. The number of rooms to bathrooms, room dimensions, parking! Where do we start, I see a long battle. Oh well, so be it.

  18. Petra Jones commented

I strongly object to the amended DA. The DA is not in the interests of the Marrickville community and will have adverse impacts on existing residents (commercial and residential). It appears the 15 bedrooms and shared bathrooms do not meet basic requirements regarding floor space. I doubt very much that this is aimed at attracting tourist accommodation and appears to be targeting something else entirely. It appears as though the DA is tailored towards gambling rather than providing the residents a pleasant space to socialise. This is one of the worst DA applications I have read. Please reject it. Marrickville needs more great venues such as The Gasoline Pony and The Oak Barrel, not gabling dens such as this. No one benefits from this except the developer.
